The banjo playing always sinks into the marrow and chills to the bones. If anybody just sits through this music, there is something very wrong. I cannot sit still. This band is way above excellent, and much big ginormous respect to them all. Eliza is a phenomenal banjo player!!!!
This isn't a Towns' song. You're thinking of 'Waiting round to die' which has a similar line towards the end which the writer of this has lifted for the chorus.
I had a boyfriend in college that played the banjo in such a way I’d never heard before. It’s hard for people to understand when you say “I love the banjo” because they think of that one type of song. It’s such a beautiful instrument and under rated. I love to see folks loving it!
She has a beautiful voice perfect for this type of music. I am so tired of all the female vocalists sounding almost exactly alike. This girl is spectacular and original sounding.

We were out doing chores and running errands for family one Saturday. Me and my two boys. We hit a few yard sales along the way. After we finished everything up, we decided to swing by G.G.s house. Their Great Grandma, my grandmother. We saw what I thought was a yard sale, but it turned out to just be a family in the front yard with a lot of stuff, chairs, and some BBQ rolling while they were playing bluegrass on a guitar, five string, and an upright bass. I stayed to hear the whole song and clapped at the end. They were great. They never acknowledged my presence in any way. It was very strange behavior for people playing bluegrass, but this was in California. People there just aren't right. There's a feel to it when you're there. This sounds great on a device, but to be there is a tactile thing that transcends sound alone. This is a fantastic performance. Wish I'd have been there.
Anyone who has a problem with the vocals has never actually sat around a jam circle and appreciated real bluegrass. It's more about the jam, the instruments, and the moment. Not being an autotuned pop singer. The best bluegrass in the world sounds exactly like this.
She's also singing further away from the camera mic's than the other singers so her vocals are going to be a bit off since she's not trying to 'belt' it out. Great video and performance.
Great job Eliza carrying both the lyrics and the banjo melody like a boss! Love hearing a good technical banjo picking with a great female soulful voice, but not often is that from the same person simultaneously. Thank you for sharing this!
I could listen to Nathaniel sing for hours. His voice is so relaxing after a long day of work and a cold beer. I can't wait to see you guys in Kent, Ohio this year.
I dont give a shit what anyone says... I LOVE this chicks voice. It's so raw and real. Its adds an emotion to the song that really suites it. And she fucking shreds on that banjo. Most of ya'll couldn't walk and chew gum at the same time. Let alone sing and play an instrument.
you gotta spend the time to learn how to actually play the instrument man, it takes time even for people with talent. These guys didn't just pick up the instrument and magically were able to play in a single day lol
Perfect song, both lyrically and musically, to detail the depravity and pleasure of the beginning of opiate addiction. I left a big part of myself back there, back before I put that first needle in the crook of my arm and pushed that brown filth into my veins. I don't know how to get him back again, the guy I used to be, or if it's even possible. But by the grace of God alone I am alive to draw these breaths and write these words. Though I'm not quite sure why I was spared. I am not sure what made me different from the twenty odd people and friends who embraced the finality, the cold and bittersweet grasp of an OD, but I do know that amongst us, at one point we all felt these feelings, thought these thoughts, and lied the same lies to ourselves. I survived it (in a manner of speaking) sure, but I'm now more a ghost than a person. A phantom of a photo negative of myself. A poor facsimile. I eat, sleep and wake like i used to, I wear my same skin (albeit a bit older and lonelier now), I smile and laugh when it's socially appropriate to do so, and I express sorrow when societal conventions dictate it is necessary, but it doesn't change the fact that I am a man trying to cope with the loss of something I can't even articulate. It's something few can understand until they lose it, a veritable Faustian bargain. Yet I remain. Even today, years off the needle, I want for it's relief. I suppose that is a response to a greater existential crisis. But every day I refuse it because I want to one day reach the moment where I "finally came back", to where I finally am made whole again. Sorry for the rant. Guess I'm just in a self pitying kind of mood tonight
I love this song. I don’t care if it’s bluegrass or not. I just think that the vocals go together beautifully and the instrumentals suit the song perfectly. Thanks to the artists for posting it. I wish I could buy it for my iPod.

Ed Copeland I think Patton meant that style of banjo is not bluegrass, which is a typical style of picking, she is playing a claw hammer style. Or failing banjo. Bluegrass banjo is played with the three finger picks. Or maybe he did mean it’s not bluegrass genre music and at that point I would agree with you Ed and say it is indeed bluegrass.

so awesome a cover
No one has uttered the name of the infamous author to this incredible gem of a song. Songwriter: Townes Van Zandt May you RIP always...
"If I needed you" Written by Towns while high in cough medicine... hauntingly beautiful when sung by Emmylou Harris
You mean, Buffy Saint Marie Van zandt only mentioned in waiting round to die?
Ya TVZ came immediately to mind RIP🙃
These guys are tight !
Love it.

Reminds me of my grandfather’s reunions with his family playing instruments and singing. Would love to go back to those times.
I literally got chills as soon as Eliza began to sing. That woman is powerful.

One of my favorite songs covered by one of my favorite bands, HOW AM I ONLY DISCOVERING THIS TWO YEARS LATE?!
Jesus F'n Christ why aren't musicians like this are not on the radio?
No record company shelling out the payola and pimping they ass.
They want to keep their souls....
Who knows. There is so much good new music out there no one could keep up and still so much that's being promoted commercially is total crap.

Her raw voice is what makes this song so amazing. Unfortunately in her own song, her voice sounds more "produced" and in my opinion that ruins them.
Agreed, ua-cam.com/video/ZEvQOPUHGH8/v-deo.html
Their performance, (especially the singer’s,) has a truth about it that no “studio wizard” can create. It’s just as it should be.
