The banjo playing always sinks into the marrow and chills to the bones. If anybody just sits through this music, there is something very wrong. I cannot sit still. This band is way above excellent, and much big ginormous respect to them all. Eliza is a phenomenal banjo player!!!!

This isn't a Towns' song. You're thinking of 'Waiting round to die' which has a similar line towards the end which the writer of this has lifted for the chorus.

I had a boyfriend in college that played the banjo in such a way I’d never heard before. It’s hard for people to understand when you say “I love the banjo” because they think of that one type of song. It’s such a beautiful instrument and under rated. I love to see folks loving it!

    Lyrics for this cover::
    I ain't your darling, I ain't your baby now
Them holy roller can't climb out of town
Its dark where I've been staying,
Don't you worry, Come on in
I've finally found a friend, till the end
    Codeine, Codeine
You're the nicest thing I've seen
    For awhile,
    For awhile
You hold my hand when I stumbled into the room
And, all of these faces will all be faded soon
    It's whisper time again
    Time to forget everything
Its all I got left to hold onto
    Codeine,
    Codeine,
You're the nicest thing I've seen,
    For awhile,
    For awhile
You can take your dusty bottle off the shelf
And, you can keep your words of wisdom to yourself
    I love you darling so..
Why can't you let me go
Before you find me hanging in a cell
    Codeine,
    Codeine,
You're the nicest thing I've seen,
    For awhile,
    For awhile
    For awhile,
    For awhile

We were out doing chores and running errands for family one Saturday. Me and my two boys. We hit a few yard sales along the way. After we finished everything up, we decided to swing by G.G.s house. Their Great Grandma, my grandmother. We saw what I thought was a yard sale, but it turned out to just be a family in the front yard with a lot of stuff, chairs, and some BBQ rolling while they were playing bluegrass on a guitar, five string, and an upright bass.
I stayed to hear the whole song and clapped at the end. They were great. They never acknowledged my presence in any way. It was very strange behavior for people playing bluegrass, but this was in California. People there just aren't right.
There's a feel to it when you're there. This sounds great on a device, but to be there is a tactile thing that transcends sound alone.
This is a fantastic performance. Wish I'd have been there.

Anyone who has a problem with the vocals has never actually sat around a jam circle and appreciated real bluegrass. It's more about the jam, the instruments, and the moment. Not being an autotuned pop singer. The best bluegrass in the world sounds exactly like this.

Perfect song, both lyrically and musically, to detail the depravity and pleasure of the beginning of opiate addiction.
I left a big part of myself back there, back before I put that first needle in the crook of my arm and pushed that brown filth into my veins. I don't know how to get him back again, the guy I used to be, or if it's even possible. But by the grace of God alone I am alive to draw these breaths and write these words. Though I'm not quite sure why I was spared.
I am not sure what made me different from the twenty odd people and friends who embraced the finality, the cold and bittersweet grasp of an OD, but I do know that amongst us, at one point we all felt these feelings, thought these thoughts, and lied the same lies to ourselves.
I survived it (in a manner of speaking) sure, but I'm now more a ghost than a person. A phantom of a photo negative of myself. A poor facsimile. I eat, sleep and wake like i used to, I wear my same skin (albeit a bit older and lonelier now), I smile and laugh when it's socially appropriate to do so, and I express sorrow when societal conventions dictate it is necessary, but it doesn't change the fact that I am a man trying to cope with the loss of something I can't even articulate.
It's something few can understand until they lose it, a veritable Faustian bargain. Yet I remain.
Even today, years off the needle, I want for it's relief. I suppose that is a response to a greater existential crisis. But every day I refuse it because I want to one day reach the moment where I "finally came back", to where I finally am made whole again.
Sorry for the rant. Guess I'm just in a self pitying kind of mood tonight

the lady has a wicked, wicked picking style.
also people ranting.. it's bluegrass. there's gonna be higher pitches, not full, rounded Aretha Franklin vocals. the entire point of bluegrass is instrumental appreciation.

Ed Copeland I think Patton meant that style of banjo is not bluegrass, which is a typical style of picking, she is playing a claw hammer style. Or failing banjo. Bluegrass banjo is played with the three finger picks. Or maybe he did mean it’s not bluegrass genre music and at that point I would agree with you Ed and say it is indeed bluegrass.

Eliza Doyle came to Bengough for the Gateway Music Festival a few years ago. Her car broke down and I, being a CAA towtruck contractor, got to tow her car to the city(2 hours away). Had a great visit with her on the road. She has a wonderful personality! She later sent me an autographed cd(which I unfortunately lost when my shop burned down last year).
