It’s been a rough week 😒
@@ragemachine420 it’s been a rough 8 years
That’s what I keep telling myself lol
3 day medal caught the shanks first round after 6 holes
This helped me so much! Placing the two balls next to each other, starting at the farthest then hitting the closest TOTALLY helped my shank of the golf ball. I thought I was to close to the ball. Turns out, I was too far away and was compensating by reaching out. Super thanks!
Thanks Dustin, glad to hear it.
All the best, Adam
Bless you Adam, this must have been tough to make. I caught the shanks recently, more than likely it wafted down from a few bays up at that range. This video helped me tremendously.
Thanks for the note Simeon, and glad you made progress
Best, Adam
Couple of shanks off the tee today, cor throws you off your game and you feel yourself trying to start steering the ball! Seen this drill before and will go back to it at the range, great advice
Thanks Harry, hope you make good progress.
All the best, Adam
Great video Adam. I enjoy all your videos. For a beginner golfer, these videos are a tremendous help. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, I'm glad you are finding the videos helpful.
Best, Adam
HUGE TIP PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU NEVER WANT TO SHANK THE BALL AGAIN!!! WHEN YOU SET UP TO THE BALL KEEP YOUR BACK PRETTY STRAIGHT UP AND BEND YOUR KNEES BUT MAKE SURE THEY AINT LEANING TOWARDS YOUR TOES LIKE SHOULD FEEL LIKE THEY ARE LEANING BACK A BIT THEN STICK YOUR BUTT OUT AND IT KINDA SHOULD FEEL LIKE YOU NOW YOU HAVE A STURDY STANCE AND YOUR WEIGHT SHOULD FEEL PRETTY BALANCED AFTER DOING THIS AND LIKE YOU CAN FEEL THAT NOW YOUR WEIGHT ISN’T ON YOUR TOES AND TRUST ME DOING THIS YOI WILL NOT EVER SHANK IT AGAIN!!!
Thank you so much this has made me feel more confidant about next time I'll be able to do this trick my dad never thought of this today
Thanks, hope you get it sorted out.
All the best, Adam
Hi Adam, im a scratch golf academy member and i developed the dreaded "S"... i tried this drill at the driving range....absolutely awesome worked immediately...Thanks Adam
Phil,
Glad you found the video helpful. Thanks for your membership at SGA.
All the best, Adam
Love watching this 20 minutes before my round, cheers fellow head cases
Great video. I did your two ball drill by addressing outside ball and hit inside ball. Definitely helped!! I was coming too far from inside which was causing the shanks with wedges. I recommend hitting plastic balls in back yard with wedges if possible for those who have mental issue with shanks. No pressure on outcome or being at the range with others. It helped me work on my swing plane.
Thanks for the comment Dan, glad you made progress.
All the best, Adam
I didnt even know I could come in too far from the inside. I've actually been doing that a lot because I've weakened my grip and am probably over trying to swing out to the right so I dont come across it
Fantastic tip at the end of the video. Amazing how the brain reroutes the swing and results in a pure hit.
Thanks Kenneth.
Best, Adam
Great video and that golf course is in amazing shape
Thanks Lamarcus.

The trick of setting up on the outside ball really worked for me!
Glad to hear it Richard.

Hi Adam, The shanks returned for me in a
Comp yesterday - horrible - I watched another UA-cam instruction with 5 changes but didnt work!, I watched your 2 ball drill, instant results no shanks Im still chippin away shank free 😁😁 many thanks
Glad to hear it Rob
All the best, Adam
Does this tip translate to the driver? I'm decent with wedges and higher irons, but struggle off the tee.
Davey,
Yes, this would hold true with the driver also.
Best, Adam
I enjoy your instructions on every aspect of playing golf. Would you do an instruction on a downhill lie and an uphill lie.
Thanks Jimmy. I have videos on those topics at the UA-cam channel, hope you like them.

Thanks very much John
This really taps into golf mentality and how you think about your swing. Really great advice, thanks!
Thanks Oliver, glad you liked the video.

Great video ADAM!
Thanks for the comment Curtis.

Great video
Glad you liked it.
Thanks, Adam
I hit 2 buckets of shanks continuously today! It was embarrassing but I was so dogged that I set it right and hit 5 more buckets perfect!
Arvind,
Glad you sorted it out!

"Idk how I did it, I just did it" Awesome hit!
Leonel,
Thanks for watching the video.

Very good tips sir
Thanks Rahul.

Wow. On the range now. And this works!!!
Glad to hear it Brandon!
Perfect pointer!
Thanks, glad you found it helpful.
Best, Adam
It dawned on me that I might be swinging too inside when I shank it. At the range I laid down a club just outside a ball pointing at the target. I took the club straight back low and slow, trying to follow the guide while turning my shoulders. Didn't shank a one!
Glad to hear it Dave! I hope the progress continues for you.
All the best, Adam
I will be trying this tip at the range tomorrow. Unfortunately shanks have just crept back in to my game. Just a one question. assuming I start striking the inside ball correct. I obviously can't carry on placing the club face on the other side of the ball. At what point should i start addressing the inside ball? Thanks for all your video's
Thanks John. The idea is to just play around with different address/impact points until you feel build feel. Play around with it and see what works.
All the best, Adam
Well just got back from the range. I put inpact tape on the club face. Yes I occasionally had a good strike but still towards the heel. I tried addressing full length of the club face on my side and again a few good strikes but believe it or not some still off the heel. So obviously I am extending the club outwards. Now what I did try was changing my posture with a little more flexed knees ,keeping my back a bit straighter resulting in slightly more weight towards my heels. I ended the session hitting about 10 crisp ones out of the middle. Thought it time to stop while I was ahead 😊 So Adam it appears that it could have been just back to basics. I hope. Thanks for all your advice on this and other videos.
@@JH-of1xz I find that every fix is temporary
I like the subjects you choose and your teaching style. Looking forward to your instruction on greenside bunkers. I've suddenly lost my way in them after years of pretty good bunker play for a recreational golfer. Lots of meat in your vids!
Thanks Joe, I'm glad you are finding the videos helpful.I'll try to get some bunker videos out. If it's of interest I will be offering complete courses in different aspects of the game (such as bunker play) starting in August at www.scratchgolfacademy.com Best, Adam.
I will be trying this at the range tomorrow. Went from a perfect iron swinger. Lost my swing and shank 80% of the time man.
Hope you make progress Jay
Best, Adam
Thanks for this video, it was very helpful and immediately fixed my shank on the range, but once I take the second ball away I’m right back to shanking it. With the second ball there I strike the ball even more pure than I have been before I caught this dreaded habit of shanking. Is there anything I could do to get back at it without the second ball there? Thanks
Brendan,
I’d try for some toe hits, not just solid hits when there is one ball there
Hope this helps
Best, Adam
@@Scratchgolfacademy Thank you 🙏🏻 I’ll try it out.
Adam how do you hit down on the golf ball with irons?

So I have a problem when I golf I shake a lot and I’m always tense and any tips to calm down or to help shaking I’m a female golfer
Jazzie,
Sorry you are having problems. I offer video courses on the mental side of the game at www.scratchgolfacademy.com I hope you'll consider it. Generally though, it's disassociating yourself from outcomes, and especially how you think people will view you based on those outcomes. Not a piece of cake to do, but freedom (or partial freedom) from that not only frees you up to play better, but you'll have more fun too.
If you go to www.extraordinarygolf.com and look at Fred's letter to himself entitled 'Dear younger me' you'll be inspired.
Best, Adam
It is always a shock when I shank. I hit a good drive, a nice second shot and then wham, off to the right. Its inexplicable.
Glenn, agreed, it is a shock when it happens!
Best, Adam
um, no. it's easily explained. You hit the ball off the hosel.
my problem is I hit the ball very close to the hosel ....not a shank but I am losing distance ...I try and try but to no avail ...my face tape proves that I make contact very near the hosel 90% of the time ...any help would be appreciated !!
Jack,There could be some reasons that I wouldn't know without seeing you, but I'd suggest the following. Stand a little further from the ball, and try to hit some off the extreme toe of club (but address ball from middle of club). You've got to feel something really different before you can fine tune. I hope this helps.Best, Adam
Why do they keep making clubs with hosels ?
I hear you Jim! There have been a couple of sets made over the years that didn't really have hosels, but they weren't big sellers.
Best Adam
Could early extension be a cause? I shank all this time . I was also told from a pro I have early extension
I'd agree, early extension could definitely be a cause.
Best, Adam
anything can cause a shank..too far inside...too far outside...standing too close to ball...standing too far away....
Those fairways look so good
Yes, Mediterra is a beautiful place.
Thanks Scott
I finally found the cause of my heel shots and shanks mostly with wedges and short irons. I tried everything I could find to cure this. Nothing worked to actually fix it. I stood farther away, closer to the ball, placed an object (box, head cover, another ball) outside the ball. Tried to hit off the toe, couldn't do it! The fix for me? Club shaft angle at address. My club shaft plane at address was too flat. When I raised it so the handle pointed above my belt I now hit the sweet spot consistently and can now hit toward the toe of the club. I haven't seen any so called expert instructors mention this as a cause.
Dave,
Glad you found something that helps you. Often these are individual keys, and don't have a broad application. The main thing is you are hitting the ball better.
Best, Adam
Something I've done that I can do on the course is to actually line the ball up on the hosel at address. My only swing thought is to "hit the ball on the toe of the club". I pure it every time. It's amazing.
That sounds like a good idea to me Max!
Best, Adam
😂😂😂😂😂
that is some nice grass
Yes, Mediterra is a beautiful place.
Thanks, Adam
When he sets up two balls and hits the inside ball, is he telling us to take the downswing slightly inside the backswing? That is what I tried and it is the best cure for the shank I have yet to find. I wish some of these pros (I paid $50 for a half an hour) understood that all I needed to do was take the downswing a slightly inside. Sometimes I still lose distance by hitting close to the hosel but the shanks are dramatically reduced.
That's the idea, glad it's helping.
All the best, Adam
I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT YOU INTENTIONALLY CAN HIT A SHANK AND THEN FIX IT!!! i run away from that like monkey pox or covid. that being said, i wouldn't have watched this if I didn't have the "laterals" so I can't wait to get to the range and try the drill. Last time they struck I used a two by four (Bob Toski) in front of the ball. I must have a fundamental swing flaw that allows the shanks to reappear.
Thanks Thomas, and hope you make progress
Best, Adam
Early extension, straightening my Rt arm too soon (bringing the hosel out to the ball) coming OTT with my Rt shoulder and a weak grip tend to be the biggest culprits that cause my shanks. This 2 ball drill is popular, but I wonder if it addresses the root cause?
Scott,
Thanks for watching the video. I agree that the two ball doesn't necessarily cause deep seated swing problems. That said, it can help golfers realize that they are not totally stuck, and can make adjustments.
All the best, Adam
I can’t straighten my left arm due to a elbow injury, I shank every shot - shall I just quit golf since I can’t straighten my arm?
James,
Calvin Peete was a vary success Tour player who couldn’t physically straighten his left arm. Keep at it, the ball responds you the club, not your arm
Best, Adam
Didn’t Zoeller address the ball with the hosel of the club? (and so force himself into the drill shown here). It must work, dude was a major winner and a major character
👍👍
I was having the best rounds of my life, probably 4 in a row. Shanked an entire round and now have been fighting the shank for weeks i do not understand. This drill works EVERYTIME but as soon as the second ball is gone its back😭😭😭
Hang in there. Don't try for flush contact, see if you can hit some shots off the toe.
All the best, Adam
@@Scratchgolfacademy thank you! Playing tomorrow usually stoked for my rounds now nervous waiting for that first shank lol what a mind game this sport is 🫠
Been playing golf for a while. Developed the shanks a couple of months ago for the first time. I practiced this and immediately cured it. First couple of swings at the inner ball was freaky but clicked quickly. Great help. THANK YOU!!
Glad to hear it Sean.
All the best, Adam
I carry a hybrid with very little offset that I can hit 175-180......If I get the shanks I just use the hybrid twice on par 4's.....the scorecard doesn't care how you get a par.....lol
Sounds like it's working for you Eddie!
All the best, Adam
Right on Eddie, same here.
I have a serious dose of Morgan Freeman's with my wedges
+Mark Warren
Haven't heard that one before Mark, but I get it. Hope you get it solved!
Best, Adam
HI MARK, WHY NOT RENAME IT THE SHAW`S ,SOUNDS MUCH BETTER.
Sucks I hate the shanks I was going 4 under after 13 holes finished the round with an 81🤬🤬🤬 all my irons and wedges were off the hosel I was so pissed I broke my 60 wedge smh!! I’ll get them from time to time like a disease hopefully this helps!!
Hope the video is helpful Tony.
Best, Adam
Adam is it possible that you shank because you let your lower body go before the upper body a lot?
Alex,
The lower body should go first, but if it caused a big change in body angles, a loss of balance, or maybe getting the arms stuck behind you, then yes it could cause shanks. I hope this helps a bit.
On October 12th I'm launching the Premium version of the www.scratchgolfacademy.com website, one on one on line coaching from me will be there. If it's of iterest to you please check it out.
Best, Adam

Scratch Golf Academy.com
Great tip but how practical for the actual course "I can do it, it's not that difficult..." doesnt give me a fix for mine.
I hear you, but the reality is that you have a clubbed swinging at very high speed in an enormous arc. Just a couple of inches off at contact and it's disaster, this is why you have to create some instinctive feel. Just because you're on the course, and it's 'important' doesn't change that.
All the best, Adam
I used to hit the ball great but I just picked up the clubs for the first time in 6 months and man I’m rusty
That's quite a layoff, hang in there.
All the best, Adam
Hi Adam i was of 9 at one time..Now i swear i am struggling to break 200.. 100 yards from the green in 1 i still could lose the ball or picking it up, I am 55 and i can still hit it long of the tee for my age.. I have tried the 2 balls even a brick i hit everything, even when i try to miss it i still hit both things..Any help how to miss both balls..HELP..
Draig,
Sorry you're struggling so much. Without being able to see your swing I'd guess it's mostly mental (based on former handicap etc). By mental I mean once you try to hit the ball you aim AT the ball and get stuck in the same cycle. In the absence of interference the human mind is amazingly adept with tools. If you took a stick and aimed at pine cones on a branch while relaxed and having fun there's no way you'd consistently hit the wrong pine cone. Go out and play around, and stop trying not to shank, hopefully you can break through.
All the best, Adam
Thanks for the reply..Your right its def mantal problem..As soon as i get an iron in my hand i am petrified what to do next cause its been going on that long, good few years now..My pals can't believe how i can hit it so well of the tee.. I honestly can't remember the last time i got a par, and that is being honest, it has got that bad..My pal says go to a hypnotherpist...lol maybe next step..Par 3s i am better throwing it no joke..
+craig davidson
Best of luck going forward Craig.
Thanks, Adam

It takes a special skill to continually shank
I’ve known a number of people with that skill
Seems like someone could make a club without an exposed hossle
There have been a few over the years, but if the golfer hits it that much in the heel they'd get a crummy shot anyway.
All the best, Adam
When I hit with my irons, specifically my 6 iron, the ball has a tendency to travel in a sharp left path, almost horizontal to where I'm standing. If the target is 12 o'clock, the ball travels between 9 and 10 o'clock if that makes sense - its a hard left turn and virtually no distance. Would this be considered a shank? Would the drills from this video be good to practice or would you recommend something else? My guess is that I'm hitting the ball with the part of the hosel closest to me. Thanks for the videos, very helpful!
Thanks John. I'd agree, you're likely hitting the ball with the part of the hosel that's closest to you.
All the best, Adam
Lmao, my six iron has no wear on the face I’m shanking it mostly
I used to be able to strike the well. But now I can't do anything but shank it. I mean every shot I shank it. Realy struggling to like golf at the moment 😔
Hang in there, some of these suggestions (relax your mind, do something different) should help.
All the best, Adam
g man , im in the same boat. Did you find a fix?
@@ben-vf yes mate. You will get over it.its just a phase.a frustrating one but it will pass.
@@gazwhite5297 yeah cheers, its strange that it happened all of a sudden, pretty sure I'm coming to far from the inside and getting stuck with early extension. One or two pure iron shots a round is not enough.
Thanks for your reply.
maybe teacher of the year but not very good at curing the shank. I've found moving the ball back in my stance and keeping weight off my toes helped mine.
Each person has to figure it out for themselves at the end of the day.
Best, Adam
what an ass reply. Hope you keep shanking.

Adam,
This frustrates me! It seems that almost every teacher that talks about shanks address the "coming over the top" shank. I have the inside out shanks! I wish someone would significantly address this problem as I when I don't shank I hit fats, thins and hooks. I find it almost impossible to turn through the golf shot. What am I doing wrong??
Soonerslim
Jim,
Sorry to hear you're shanking, but as you say, it's part of an overall inside out pattern. I have a video at the channel on hitting fades that might help.
All the best, Adam
Is it possible for you to add a slow motion of your swing?
Michael, Thanks, I will try to do that in upcoming videos. There are quite a few swings and shots in slow motion in the complete courses that are being offered soon (in a few weeks) at www.scratchgolfacademy.com
I get shanks when under pressure so now when am on a good round I try to shank it and it just doesn't happen why this works I haven't a clue
The mysteries of the human mind, and how sometimes we have to trick ourselves.....
Hope it works for you.
All the best, Adam
Most golfers that shank, move their hips towards the ball instead of turning the hips.
I'd say that's fairly common.
Thanks, Adam
These guys that have the solution for shanking should demonstrate a shanked shot but they never do...because they can't. If they really knew the causes, they would be able to hit a shank on command and then follow up with an unshanked and corrected shot. Please prove me wrong because I'm dying to see
such a demonstration.
Oh I’ve seen such demonstrations. I can do it at about 50% of the time if I try. At the ‘end of the day’ it comes down to skill, or awareness of where the club is in space.
Highly skilled players can fade, draw, knock down etc etc shots, because they’ve gained feel, or aware of where the club is. Someone with that skill level will rarely shank for the same reason
Best, Adam
Donald, l agree with you. In addition many of those golf teachers always make a short story long with irrelevant analisys.
When I shank the ball I'm simply standing to close thats whT I find
Fair enough Jason.
Best, Adam
So just set up with the ball on the toe side of center face at address? Common sense.
Thanks, hope it helps.
Best, Adam
Hope this helps after my round today
Best of luck!

Best, Adam
Scratch Golf Academy I liked the video. Just got impatient waiting for the info on how to get rid of the shank. Believe me, I know what a shank is; wanting very much to stop doing it.
doesnt tell you how to fix the problem, i can do the same thing and the next shot will still be a shanks
Sorry you didn't like the video.
Best, Adam
It is asking you to train your mind to hit on the inside as you come down to the ball.
I think that is the response many pga tour pros would honestly give if you asked them to give you detail as to how they hit such a good shot. “I don’t know how I did it, it’s not that hard...” 😂
People don't want to hear that, but it's true. Everyone has a decent amount of this 'innate' ability, but (in my opinion) want easy answers, instead of skill development.
Thanks very much.
Best, Adam
Yes I agree, some things you just can’t teach. Love your videos Adam!
This video sucks. You can’t do that on the course and this won’t help you. This is the equivalent of saying “just don’t shank it”
Wow, you hated this video.
you have to address it at the hosel and then try to hit the center of the clubface dumbass.
I don't know how I did it. Yup. Big help buddy. Lol
Sorry you don't like the videos.

Why do these golf instructors alway introduce themselves by their awards. No one really cares.
Well you care enough to comment about it. Cheers 🥂
Not helpful.
OMG... too much talking and very little instruction... what a waste.
Sorry you didn’t like the video.
Best, Adam
Ya. If the second ball moves, you've shanked it. What a joke this dude is. The ball flying right isn't proof enough. No genius here.
...well obviously it is...because the idea is to follow through straight enough upon impact without hitting the second ball.
Get your head out of your ass.
You are the JOKE! I have done this drill many times and it works because you focus on the inside ball and your brain just swings your hands in closer yo your body to hit the inside ball. Don't knock it til you try it!
what a freaking clown you are.
Ooowww. Teacher of the year. Do you have to be English to win this? It's certainly not skill
