  • This video will show you how to drop the transmission pan and replace the internal transmission filter and refill process on the 2005-2010 Chevy Cobalt this procedure should also work on the Chevy HHR, Pontiac Sunfire, Chevy Malibu, and Chevy Cavalier or any GM vehicle that uses the 4t40e and 4t45e transmission. Filter and fluid used in video was purchased from Amazon and I will provide links to them below.

    Nice Job! One of the few videos I've seen where the car was actually left running to check the oil level.

    1st let me say you're a man of great crashmanship.
    Next you spoke very well and conveyed everything.
    This is a very great video.
    65 years old and been around heavy equipment in 18 Wheelers for 60 years..
    With 28 certifications...
    You are the greatest of the greatest. Please do not be offended. I was building hot rods back in the late sixties and seventies and part of the eighties. That means cars pick ups and big trucks. I noticed that the car was running when you checked the fluid level.
    And i'm sure that you are correct doing this. That's the way it was back in the old days. So do it the same way you did it Thank You

    I think manufacturers are just producing vehicles for the leased market. Knowing that they'll be leased, there's no reason to build in any serviceable features, other than oil and filter. No transmission dip sticks, no grease zerks on front end/rear end components... All meant to have a short life, crushed in 6-10 years.

    I remember doing this to my cars back in the 1970's and the filter ALWAYS came with a gasket. Just shows how companies have gotten greedier over the years. EVERYTHING came with a gasket. Waterpump thermostat everything.

    Thanks for the video and information!
    I just drained my fluid and I filled about 9 quarts, just like you did. The drain plug started to drain right around 8.5-9 quarts.
    However, the check plug did not stop draining until about 4 quarts.
    I did not change my filter and more than 9 quarts came out initially. Does this all sound correct?
    My guess is that it was substantially overfilled and it came out black.

      Since you didn’t pull the filter that holds quite a bit of fluid and also when the filter is pulled more fluid drains out and you followed the procedure with the temperature and vehicle running right?

    Great Video!! But I have a question I have a 2006 Chevy cobalt LS model my owner Manual say it takes Dexron-VI ATF but for some reason Amazon says it doesn’t accept Dexron-VI should I be concerned is all Dexron-VI fluid the same or are some different I would like to know. Thank for the great video again though.

      @BLUECOLLARGARAGE  7 місяців тому

      Amazon’s vehicle spec database isn’t always correct I’ve noticed on a lot of vehicles. Nothing to be concerned about it does take the Dexron-VI.

    I got a 2010 chevy cobalt, when i come to a stop light it’ll sometime get stuck in 1st gear/hesitate to go even when i put my foot on the gas. Would it be worth doing a trans filter/fluid replacement?

    • @theroyalcrownedtiger2946
      @theroyalcrownedtiger2946 11 місяців тому +1

      You've got defective auto transmission fluid transfer tubes, located just above the transmission filter, held on by 8mm bolts.
      The fluid transfer tubes, are responsible for the forward gears / reverse gear, if it's defective it won't move at all or won't operate normal, like it should.
      You might as well and change the auto transmission fluid and filter.
      Use the Castrol full synthetic Dexron VI in the G5 / Cobalt auto transmission.
      Don't forget to drain the excess fluid, after new fluid and filter has been put in, also make sure to clean the trans fluid pan, magnet, the old trans pan gasket can be reused if it's in good shape, no damages, otherwise use the new trans pan gasket, if in doubt use the new gasket.
      You can get the replacement part at the junk yard.
      Also scan for codes, defective solenoids, sensors, can cause malfunction too.
      Low fluid also causes malfunction as well.

    If the fluid isn’t leaking. Can we fill it while the car is still running or does it have to be off?

    • @BLUECOLLARGARAGE

      It can be running while you fill just make sure it’s warmed up or at least at 104 degrees Fahrenheit

    Did you ever record the time of how long it took to reach 104 temp. Woulda been cool to know for the guys that don’t have a higher end scan tool that tells us all that. 😕 lol

    • @BLUECOLLARGARAGE
      @BLUECOLLARGARAGE  Рік тому +1

      It doesn’t take long I’d say it was probably about 10 minutes but also you have to factor in what the temp is outside.

      @@BLUECOLLARGARAGEhey! Thanks for replying so fast! Usually never happens lol
      I do have one more question, I’m literally doing this now as I type this.
      I don’t have a high end scan tool to reset the trans. I only have a little code reader. Did you really have to have it reset? Will the car not run correctly if you don’t reset it? I didn’t realize this was required and I had already started the job 😕
      I’m thinking if I do really need to do that, I try driving it to AutoZone and have them do it? I know they offer scanning for free.

    • @BLUECOLLARGARAGE
      @BLUECOLLARGARAGE  Рік тому +1

      @@BaMFusco no there’s nothing to be reset just drain, replace filter and pan, then fill and your hood to go.

      So I literally just finished a job as I’m typing this and I couldn’t believe what happened on my version of doing this job lol it’s my girlfriends 2009 cobalt LS same car and since you ended up having to add about 9 quarts I went to head and added 8 quarts right off the bat. I bought two for court jugs and put both in. I let the car warm up and I want to take the plug off to check the level and instantly 🎉🎉started pouring out at a pretty good stream to lol
      I let this car sit overnight for two days to make sure I got the most out of it like you and I was still way over. I 🎉really am confused. I wonder why.
