Primming the filter has been a hot debate on the ol' interwebs. Some technicians/mechanics I subscribe to on UA-cam will say you should, and others say it doesn't matter with newer vehicles since the oil pumps will fill them up within seconds after an engine has started. I always say, "Do what makes you feel better." It's your vehicle.

and mechanics know that main brg's get the oil first then the rods then the cam ,then the lifters then the rockers , then the oil filter, the oil filter is only a slip stream under flow , and if your filter cant be filled or you don't want too , just flood mode Start it ,problem solved .

On my first car whenever I changed the oil if I didnt prime the filter the engine would make an unhappy noise for a second until the filter was full. If I primed the filter first then the engine would sound good. Since then Ive always primed my filters, at very least the filter media can soak up some of that oil and it wont be a total dry start.

What I have found over the years is that most people tend to think that if you oil your lug studs that your wheels will fall right off. That if you don't tighten them to 100 ft.lbs. or more that your wheels will fall right off.
So you usually end up with dry or even rusty threads torqued to death and that is why people have so much trouble with wheel lugs.

Leaving that black and oxidized ATF, will cause more problems. Should have done a spill & fill at a minimum. The severe service interval is 45k, few vehicles fall into normal service. Only rare occassions, will change fluid will cause problems. When it gets that dirty, shift issues will happen. If its slipping, yeah, new fluid may worsen the clutch and disk slippage. Service instructions require temp of fluid to be 180F when checking level, and cycle through gears. Otherwise improper level will result. I did my GM 6T70 transmission at 100k, it was shifting funny. Fluid was black and burnt. Did a full fluid exchange, 12qts. Again at 150k, and at 190k its still running great. Did that customer a dis-service.

Older Chevy small blocks used to have a solid canister filter that you put a filter insert inside. You had to take off a piece that was in the block to get the thin ring gasket off, or use a pin or knife tip. Most people didn't know how to do that and it was common for there to be more than one gasket crammed in there.
The most I ever counted was one I took off had 5 gaskets.

I know I may create conflict but I would change the transmission fluid using the factory called for fluid as most of the old fluid will never come out of the transmission anyway and that way you would have fresh transmission fluid with built in conditioners. Kenny, I'm an auto mechanic that specializes in transmission swaps ( aka tranny swapper 🤣I couldn't help it! ) but our shop does all kinds of mechanic work including timing chain jobs ( except interference engine disasters ). I had a customer w/ a 2011 Acadia just last week that I feel so bad for. It was just one of those worst case scenarios that's written in the stars. The customer had the classic fuse box connectivity issue that Acadias are notorious for, an ECM fault that gave no power to the bank 2 coil packs resulting in the Cat flooding with gas. The honeycomb completely disintegrated and blew into that 3rd Cat ( not a resonator ) after the banks exhausts merge and clogged the entire exhaust.
I replaced the ECM, Cat bank 2, and solved the fuse box issue ( I know a secret procedure that saves the box 😉). I test drove it for 10 miles, everything great. Call the customer, she picks it up and we get a phone call 10 minutes later that she's broke down on the road stranded. I came to discover that after that expensive repair and so much time and effort, one of her cam phasers gets seized so bad, when you try to start it, the insane increase in mechanical work to turn it makes the battery sound like it's about to die!!!! I feel so bad for that poor lady 😢She spent everything she had to get the car running only for the engine to completely blow itself out less than 20 miles later.

You all have seen the videos of Russian winter, where the oil in the engine is so cold it looks like jelly when trying to drain it. I see Kenny also has the same channel lock pliers I have, affectionately called "One size fits most", as there are cases where it simply will not fit the space. Bought originally to adjust a 65mm AF nut on a industrial clutch, though later I got a 65mm socket and adapter to make this job easier. Pliers are used a lot more than that socket now, good for plumbing, able to undo all common toilet fittings easily.

When doing an oil change at home, I always pull the filter first so I don't drop it into the drain pan. I always pre-fill the filter if I can. My Subaru mounts the filter upside down on the top of the engine so no pre-fill possible. ALWAYS make sure the old filter gasket comes off and the new filter has one on it. Lots of people and shops have messed up this causing engine failure when all the oil gets pumped out on the ground. When I was working at Sears 35 years ago, the lube tech left an old filter gasket on and didn't see it. Now double gasket. It blew out and the woman got several mile away when it locked up. She called and said her car quit. The shop manager followed the oil trail for a mile or so until it stopped. The car was a few blocks farther. Sears bought an engine that day. The lube tech was the shop manager's brother in law so he didn't get fired.

The tire pressure printed on the B-pillar assumes an ambient air temperature of 68 degF. Accordingly, the formula is temperature dependent: adjusted_psi=target_psi+target_psi((ambient_temp-68)/10)*0.02. For example, at 83degF, set the tire pressure to 34 psi instead of the 33 psi for 68 degF: 33+33((83-68)/10)*0.02. Every fortnight I set my tire pressures to within a tenth of a pound using a Longacre 52-53003 Semi Pro Digital Tire Pressure Gauge. I created a MS-Excel spreadsheet to calculate the target tire pressure for a given temperature, temperatures ranging from 104 to 32 degF.

    • @ranger178
      @ranger178 4 місяці тому

if it says cold tire pressure on pillar i assume it means coldest temp it will be in morning, what if it is 10 degrees in morning? where did you get the 68 degrees from? the pressure will be different depending on outside air and how fast you are driving so it is always changing up and down a few pounds. it even recommends a pound higher on my car for high-speed highway driving.

I don't mean to nitpick, but GM now recommends tightening the oil filter one full turn after the seal is seated. They used to recommend 3/4 turn, but the PF63/UPF63R filter this engine uses would commonly become loose. I've always tightened them as tight as I can by hand and a touch more with a filter wrench.
I never prime the oil filter. I know it's a matter of preference, but I think it's a waste of time. The extra half second it takes for oil to pump up into the engine during the first startup after changing the filter doesn't hurt a darn thing. It's not like it's been sitting for years and the internals are bone dry.
Lastly, I definitely think you did your customer a disservice by not changing the fluid. They'll be lucky to get another 40k miles out of that 9T65, but would've lasted a lot longer with a fluid change. The fluid is often black by 100k miles with the newer 6/9 speed GM FWD transaxles. I work at a dealership and see techs do flushes on them all the time with high mileage.

I disagree with not changing the fluid it states if having shifting problem number one thing to do is to change fluid first there no lube left in old fluid so how would adding new fluid not help

mmmm Yes the microphone did help but it's digitally distorted - It sounds like you are using a apple phone where apple's noise cancellation or noise has got to be the worst audio pick up - A proper video SLR camera has much better audio pick up and sound reproduction.

"Acadia" is the car style (model) ? ...That's pretty cool. I haven't seen one of those here in So. CALI. I "know" you're near (U.S.) Acadia National Park (at least, that is what I recollect hearing). I would love to watch part of a visit to there (Acadia N.P., Maine) from you (as I didn't get to visit myself, when I lived in Maine, when I was in "AmeriCorps.") It is always awesome to see/hear people's adventures of the parks, what they see, notice, the places they like to go. All walks of life, everyone has their own attention in natural spaces, and I love how youtube allows different kinds of people to show their "inner naturalist" ! Also, having had experience with brands named of places, it helps "keep up" the love of the place when the products' "advertisement" is utilized "for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration [of all]/of this and future generations(U.S. National Park Service Mission Statement)."
...Anyway, the technology update is also awesome (specifications changes awareness, etc), and I really would like watching a vid of a National Parks' visit from a car guru !

i like to put a smear of silicone grease on the oil filter gasket so the gasket does not stick to engine.
do you notice longer stopping distances with more pressure in tires?

Have you ever seen a car make the filter tighter? My 82 Monte Carlo would super tighten it even if i only hand tightened it. Every time i changed it, i ended up destroying the filter to get it back off!

I don't know what kind of brake cleaner you're using but some products can not be used on things that get hot. You can't clean parts with this and then weld them and I would also avoid spraying them on exhaust pipes even after they're dry. Read the label. ;-)

Your audio was much better with this microphone, the other unit you had in the ear did not sync up or something. You can fill the filter by holding the gas pedal down (flood clearing) on newer models or pull the coil wire on older models and crank the engine till the oil pressure gauge comes up or light off. I t does make a difference on what kind of water you add to the cooling system, the newer models come with premix that is made with specially formulated water ( boron and others) to inhibit corrosion, Tap water has too many minerals (iron and ect...) that cause corrosion. Best to top off coolant with premix and be assured there is no added minerals in the system to start rust or corrosion.
