- This video from BestRest Products (www.BestRestProducts.com) shows the installation of Cyclops LED headlights in a 2008 BMW R1200GS. The improvement in daytime conspicuity and nighttime visibility is truly incredible. The first part of the video shows the bike with stock headlights in the fog - its nearly invisible. At time marker 17:00 the fog is even heavier but Cyclops LED headlights cut though it like a knife.
Cyclops LED headlights are available from BestRest Products, home of the CyclePump Tire Inflator that has a LIFETIME WARRANTY. www.BestRestProducts.com 425.673.1023 - Авто та транспорт
This is the best, and I mean BEST, video instruction I have ever seen.
Thanks Laurence. I appreciate the kind words.
Excellent! I watched this video before installing them myself yesterday and it only took about 5 minutes to do it myself. Thanks!
Great video! I thought I had no clue how to install this LED but this made it clear. Thanks!
I agree, the very best, step by step, instructional video on any topic. Great information as it allows the DIYer to make a significant safety upgrade without fear of damaging the bike and incurring costly repairs. Thank you.
Not what I was looking for but it gave me much information about my project, a complete headlight housing replacement in my 2009 R1200GSA. A very through and paced at my speed tips and information. Thanks!
Absolutely Brilliant Video. So informative and clear instructions. Many thanks for your time and efforts David, very much appreciated.
I'm off to fit my LED Bulbs right now....
Excellent video! Thanks for making this. You've given me the confidence to do this myself on my 2010 R1200GS
Thank you so much, this was far easier than the way I was trying to do it!
Hello David ,
Thank you very much for this video tutorial very well done and explained !
Best Regards
Great informative Vid. Wish more companies were like this quality instruction
Excellent video, very complete, congratulations
Thank you for a very well made tutorial.
Very nicely presented and explained. Thank you for the effort. Not a BMW fan but your fan now
Well done dude! perfect explain.
Awesome
We can always count on "BESTREAT
My ‘09 GSA bulb just blew...now i know what im gonna do thanks!
Thanx, very good video with alot of information in slow pace.
+Tobias Lindstedt Have you seen any problems with the driver hitting (caused by vibrations) the reflector?
+Tobias Lindstedt No we haven't seen this or heard of any issues related to the driver hitting the back side of the reflector housing. The driver is stuffed tight so vibration is minimal or nil.
Thanks for the tutorial, but I learned that my bike already had an aftermarket setup with auxiliary fog lights, so I still have somewhat of a mess.
Good video. The only think I would do is to discard the stock socket at the end of the globe and plug directly into Cyclopes unit. That socket is renown for burning out and even melting.
Very clear tutorial, gave me the courage and knowledge to start tinkering a bit myself. Thank you.
Yes CANbus error free. There is an H7 bulb with a resistor for BMW K-bikes. they seem especially sensitive to CANbus isdues.
Well done!
very good
Thanks for the video....but buyers should know that the H7 bulbs I received from Cyclops for my 2008 1200GS had a different line set. You had the bulb and the module which were linked, of course, by a solid wire. However, the wire from the module to the end connector was separated by an inline threaded wire splice point (resembles and inline tube type fuse holder). And the connection to the bike was done with a solid wire block. On the bike side, there was a 90 degree angles wire block instead of two separate female connections. If you look at my video I made, you can see the lights I received. Any thoughts on why my lights are different than the ones shown here?? BTW, awesome lighting! I love them!
Hi would you have a suggestion for a good quality H11 led bulb upgrade for the fog assembly’s on a r1200 that would match the 5600k colour on the cyclop units?
Impressive video and product as well. How effective can the cooling fan be in the closed housing of the lamp?
+Janos Varga Janos - it's not as effective as would be if it were external, but because of the design of the BMW headlight assembly they put the fan inside the waterproof cap. The fan does blow air around the entire headlight area, thereby keeping the base of the bulb cooler.
Great tutorial - thank you
Some heat info - I'm able to measure the heat and a few other stats:
On the Box: H7 4000 Lumen, can be used as high or low - low profile for R1200GS
I've tested the bulb on the bench first - results as follows:
Test Voltage: 14VDC
Amperage: 2A
Wattage: 28W - per bulb, reduced from 55W
Heat after i hour run time, stabilized:
--------------------------------------------------
Bulb top: 160F
Bulb base by fan 120F
driver unit: 164F
BOTTOM LINE: 27W saved per bulb or 1.9A at 14VDC.
Note: Fan is quiet and bulb seems brighter than stock
Quality seems excellent
QUESTION: Anyone having any heat damage issues with the light housing plastic or internal housing reflector? In Particular on R1200GS or F800GSA
Note: these are in the shop temperatures - NOT installed in headlight enclosure
We've not heard of heat issues with these bulbs. On either the 800 or the 1200.
BMW did have a warranty issue with their headlight housings, using their STOCK halogen headlight bulb. They replaced a bunch of them because they were turning black. Halogen bulbs create more heat inside the reflector housing, than LED bulbs do.
Where the heat of the LED is highest is at the rear driver (located outside the reflector housing), which is cooled by fins and by the fan.
den kan jo ikke komme af med varmen
Hello David,
I have a question, why remove the headlight unit of the bike to install the Cyclops led, there is there a particular reason? I managed to install my Cyclops LED without removing the headlight of my GS (2008)
It was easier to show the assembly
I just installed two LED lights on my 2009 BMW R1200 GS, low and high beams. It took me a lot longer than I was expecting. The video does make it look easy and in some regards it is but in others it is not. It takes a lot of pushing, pulling and very good finger dexterity. The lights do appear to be brighter than the normal halogen lights I had on so I’m happy in this regard. I did notice the lights only turn on when the engine is running. Is this normal? I though the low beam light would turn on as soon as you turn on the ignition. I only get a quick flash light when I turn on the ignition. It’s when I turn it on that the low beam light turns on.
It's normal for the low beam to remain OFF, until the bike is started. Only then is the low beam bulb activated. That's a design feature provided courtesy of BMW.
If you need light when engine is off, flip on the high beam.
Considering these and really appreciate your thorough installation instructions. I have changed regular bulbs on the GS and it's a pain...makes much more sens to pull the whole thing off if you are installing these and related parts.
My only concern is that these might be TOO bright. Impressed with how much easier it is to see the bike in the fog, but from the rider's perspective, aren't you getting an enormous amount of glare from even the low beam?
No, not really. Riding in the fog happens very seldom. The advantages outweigh other factors
@@bestrestproducts648 thanks!
Great video! However, after installation, Lampf error registers on Speedo . Any advise?
Jim Alessandra what model bike is it? I've heard of 1 other instance on a K bike.
Probably what's happening is that the lower current draw (and resistance) of the Cyclops VS the stock bulb, is being interpreted as a burned out bulb by the CANbus system. A resistor can be added. Contact our shop on Tuesday.
What was that high pitched electrical sound at the very end of the video? That wasn't the fans on the bulbs was it?
+chris rinck The fans do make a slight noise. The noise you heard might have been the ABS pump on the bike, or could've been ambient noise in the shop. If you send a time point in the video I can identify the source.
@Bruno Gianelli my gs did the same... it was the ABS pump
I was not clear in the previous message.
I mean for the motorcyclist with fog sees better with LED headlights or does the light reflect and does not penetrate the fog
LED lights push out light that has a whiter spectrum than a traditional halogen bulb (which is toward the lower end of the spectrum). A true fog light is typically yellow which makes things easier to see things in foggy conditions. (similar to wearing yellow lenses when skiing in whiteout conditions)
.
So... if you're riding in foggy conditions you might consider an auxiliary fog light setup. Of course a lot depends on how you aim the bulb pattern. Fog lights are low and wide, so they cut under the fog as much as possible. Headlights on the other hand, are aimed higher so the beam goes down the road further.
I have a r1200gs LC 2015, do I have to drill a hole in the caps for the heat so it can escape the head light? Exellent video though, thank you.
Junior4mind no holes needed.
BestRest Products thank you for your fast reply. Installed and happy. Hope it will last for long without any issues.
Hi, I am very interested to install these lights in my bike (R1200GS 2010) but I have 2 questions. You say there is a lifetime guarantee but whel I buy them in Holland I only get 1 year. How come? My second question is the produced heat. I hear you have to drill a hole in the cap for ventilation, but in your movie you don't talk about it.
There's a 1-year warranty, even here in the USA. No need to drill a hole.
you have to adjust the headlight as with a car
Great video. Quick question: do i have to drill holes for venting on my 2009 GS
no you dont
@@bestrestproducts648 Thank you for such a quick response. Ordered them and looking forward to installing them.
Do we have any video explaining the light adjustment after the fit ?
Nope, sorry
I know some time has passed, but do you still like and use the Cyclops set up? What do you know about the entire specialty LED light assembly by Matt Gecco? How do they compare to the cyclops?
Yes still using the Cyclops. Don't know Matt or his system
Do the ballast components rattle around inside the head guard when on rough roads?
No they don't rattle.
My new Cyclops does not look that way. There is a long connector between the bulb and the driver you have to bend extremley and it can only be placed up against the bulb. When it gets warm and the wires are bend extremely i do not know what will hapend? Why have they changed design. It says Bmw r1200Gs on the box. Furthermore my wireconnector ( year 2009) is an angular type that requires more space. Not good.
Torben(Denmark)
hi, with the caps closed, lamp cooling problems?
with led fog light is better than halogen lamp or not?
No reported cooling problems in the 5+ years we've been selling these bulbs.
Can i put them to my 2004 GS?
Yes you can. 2005-2020+ Bmw R1200GS use H7 bulbs for both high beam and low beam. True except for newer bikes with an OEM LED system.
Does the driver unit inside the housing not cause a rattle and also, could pressure of this driver unit and additional cables inside the housing not cause it to wear excessively and break?
Antonio Avila no the driver doesn't rattle. The fit is good and the wires provide elastic tension to hold things in place.
And nothing breaks. Nothing wears against the headlight housing.
We did an analysis of the potential energy required to damage the headlight housing. With the weight of the driver assembly at 6 grams, and the breaking point of headlight housing plastic of 147 joules, we determined that you would have to drop the motorcycle from a height of 353 feet before there would be any damage. Not satisfied with chalkboard theory, we took several motorcycles and installed the Cyclops lights. We then dropped them from varying heights. As with many theoretical analyses we discovered our calculations were wrong... it wasn't until we dropped an R12GS from 423 feet before damage occurred.
BestRest Products Good answer. But I understand that that calculation is in error if you factor in the weight of an unladen swallow. African genus. Nee!
Last 11 months only led burn cause by fan not working
The good news is that you have a 1 year warranty. Your bulb failure is not typical, but sh*t happens.
Are these CAN BUS error free?
Antonios - the CyclePump won't work off an accessory port on a BMW. CANbus limits the amperage to 5.5 amps. The CyclePump needs 10 amps. Most riders bypass the accessory ports and draw power directly from the battery.
If having an inflator that is CANbus compatible is your thing, you can get cheaper pumps that only use 5 amps. They will take 3x longer to inflate, and they'll quickly wear out.
Cyclops LED : ONE STAR ONLY.
About their attitude : I had to rate my >>negative review
Day time what ?? LOL 1:25
"Conspicuity" is defined as the property of being clearly discernible or the quality of being clear or bright.
det blænder meget
Bestrest.....sorry, fat fingers
Cyclops are a huge rip-off. Get novsight. Just as good and a fraction of the cost. Cyclops will fix out after a year
Ratbrain - I beg to differ. I checked Novsight and they have ZERO reviews on Amazon. You get what you pay for, and Novsight is made in China. If you have an issue you must send the bulb to Guangdong Province, China
Cyclops LED emitting modules are made in Korea, but then they're shipped to the US where they're assembled and tested. I've seen the process. I know the people. I know the bulbs and they're worth the extra cost. Cyclops has a 1-year warranty and they handle any warranty or other claim here in Washington.
BestRest Products I had 2 go out right after the warranty went out. The super tenere website has others with the same thing. Many experienced guys said the same with no reason to bad mouth cyclops
@@ratbrain7743 it will be interesting to see the comments in a year (or less) when those cheap Chinese Novsight bulbs fail. Good luck getting any warranty or any type of service from Beijing.
Novsight bulbs are $30. They have already outlasted the shit cyclops that cost 6 times as much.
ratbrain we get it. You want inferior Chinese junk. So why bash Cyclops? We all have the right to buy what we want. I had cyclops on my 2013 Yami ST1200 and I’m now installing them on my recently acquired 2008 GS12. Thanks for the vid!! Very helpful!
