Thank you so much for this video! I have a 2007 GSA and have gone through 2 fuel strips. I rode a 9,000 mile trip with that damn fuel fault. Have a 7,000 mile trip planned for this June to the Arctic and having this float is going to is going to be a massive improvement. Never understood why BMW never came out with a retrofit for this issue. I have all the items on order and already cleared the fault with the resistor setup. I would never have tackled this on my own without seeing this well put together video. Thanks again!!!
Because they don’t give a jack shit about their customers. Only thing that counts is MONEY man 😂
Good video, thanks! Note: For model years 2005-2013 (my R1200 GS Adventure is 2010, 70,000 miles), in August 2014 BMW issued a "Warranty Coverage Extension/Repair Expense Reimbursement" order which means that faults with the fuel strap are fixed free UNDER WARRANTY UP UNTIL 12 YEARS from initial retail sale of the bike. The replacement of my fuel strip happened in 2015 ($780 repair). If your bike is a 2013 you're still good until 2025.
No need to take off the complete tank. Can stay on the bike. It took me about 2hrs slow working to do the conversion. Got the float from BMW dealer. The diodes from the inventor directly.
When you say “diodes”, do you mean the cable converter? And was getting it easier than translating a website from Dutch? 😆
I think I got that fuel strip replaced about 5 times on my 2007 GSA, there was a recall so the BMW dealer fixed it without charge. I also noticed that my fuel strip usually shows movement between 100 - 200 miles, before and after it shows full/empty. I learned that my tank lasts 300mi on the freeway, 350 mi on the highway, so I reset the miles after fueling and know when I need to buy gas. One thing that threw me off in the video, you used the green hose to refuel, which is diesel here in the USA. And my BMW shows mi, yours obviously km.
It seems that BMW is releasing a new/enhanced/more robust sensor in mid 2021. I got this info from my BMW dealer when I contacted them concerning my faulty sensor. Apperantly BMW recognized the issue.
Looking good, I want to do this fix for my 2007 GSA too. Awaiting your comment about the reliability, my fuel strip only works a little so I fill up after 400km as well.
InstaBlaster...
I have the same problem with my 2008 Adventure. I just let it be and zero the tripkilometers when I put my tank full of fuel. I know I can ride around 650-660 km on one tank. So I just have to look at that. It‘s by far the cheapest solution!!
why would you bother going to the trouble 😜
Nice video I purchase a bmw 2008 r1200gs and I’m starting to deal with this I thing so I need to repair it but still has guarantees so I hope they fix it right this time, I’m tired 😴 of dealing this shit
Seems a job for aualified person thanx

Would like to know if problem is left and monitor of mileage is done :can it effect computer operation ? Thanx
My fuel strip has just failed again on my 2008 R1200RT, anyone know if this will fit my model?
My 2006 just failed yesterday. Did you get an answer?
Does that have two fuel sender units?! I have my 05 rt k26 apart and i cant find information on the routing of vacuum/fuel lines would you by chance be able to point me in the right direction? On my fuel filler neck where the strip is for the gauge there’s a hose and there’s a clamp at the end I don’t know what it clamps to. It’s so confusing and then on the field unit there is the vacuum line. What does that go to cause it’s been spraying everywhere. Thank you safe riding
Very informative and a pleasure to watch. Does this system work for the 2010 overhead cam version of the 1200GS adventure?
Do you have a direct link to the Foil Sensor Adapter Cable????....the link in video is wrong!
Any idea what's wrong when the float sensor stops working?
Thanks for a quite well-done instruction video. The fuel sensor just failed on my recently-acquired '05 R1200ST. I'm wondering if the fabricated Resistor-strip can be used to (semi-) permanently override the low-fuel warning system for an extended period (say, some months until ready to do an actual fix / replacement of faulty sensor). What do you think? Also: you didn't mention but show that resistor strip with soldered pins on the end... are they readily available somewhere or did you fabricate those, too?
Yes I think you can use the resistor strip permanently which will give you a full tank indication permanently , I heard people just doing that. The pins at the end are individual pins broken of from a 'pin header' (google it)
@@letsgodutch599 Many thanks...again. I think I'm going to try this out. I may eventually want to get a more complete fix (i.e. functional fuel gauge), but think this would be a nice step forward.
Float control 1.....where can I find it in the US ?? The website link does not work.
Can you post updated links where these parts can be bought please ? The Float control site does not seem to work. Thanks.
Dear Sir where did you get the float conversion kit from. Drew Francis Australia
Hi, who invented the trick with the resistors at 4:00?
I´d like to use it at my R1200RT and wonder if it will work.
I'm not sure, I think it will work if you have the fuel strip
If attaching the resistors fixes the display issue (Fuel level display), can you just leave the resistors attached to the plug, would that fix the problem ? thanks.
Não parar, não precipitar, não retroceder...
Can i have the link for all the material?
You showed marking the position of the fuel pump and reinstalling in the same position. But this is more critical when you put a float in; without the float the angle doesn't matter much. So it's important to get the fuel pump at a good position where the float isn't jammed up as it rises when you add fuel.
Please ignore this. The pump only goes in one way. But the mount for it might still be inaccurate for the float, in any case be sure to check that the float isn't stuck: I bent the arm a tiny bit. I cut a 48 inch piece of string, tied it in a loop, and pulled the knot from the pump opening to the top of the tank, then when I put in the float/pump assembly I looped the end of my loop twice around the float wire. Then I could test that the float actually cleared and worked: then untie the knot and remove the string.
Hi guys, my fuel sensor failed in the last session. Do you have an idea of this can be done on BMW R1200R (2009)? It has access to the fuel tank from a different side, but it looks the same.
Can this be done to my R1200Rt
Hi Dutch, any update? What are the BMW part numbers? Thanks!
Woow super bravo
Hi do you have to use diodes if your fuel strip is already working ok?
I want to change because i know it will go faulty again and the warranty has run out
No guess not if the system is still working
bello veramente. dove è possibile comprare
The fuel strip is only fitted to bikes with a computer, I have a 2006 GS without the computer so I have the fuel float, it doesn't work either and is very unreliable.
Ok, you said at the start of the video that the bike would need to be calibrated after you install the float with a computer. But I did not see you do this at the end. Mine is a 2007 GSA and the stupid fuel strip is now showing me Empty all the time. Dealer wants $504 to replace it with a new one. I like your idea better if it works. Let me know please and thank you.
Do you have a direct link to the fuel float. Can't seem to find it
This is where you can purchase (german webshop) www.leebmann24.de/hebelgeber-k25-16148554065.html
I am on the 3rd fuel strip, this time it didn't get calibrated properly by these incapable mechanics here at Argyll Motorsport in Edmonton, AB, Canada. It sucks.
Does this works on r1200gsa 2010 camhead?
Yes, as long as there is a fuel strip. Fuel strip was until mid 2010.
To have the float control installed at BMW is not much more than buying it and doing the job yourself....
Do they ship to the USA?
Check their website
I'm having trouble trying to find it in the US also, there web site isn't in English so I'm trying to find a way to get it translated
@@sparky7643 you don't need to get this part to do the conversion, you could program the ZFE with MOTOSCAN APP, after you change the position 2 of the 4 cables coming from the sensor!
Huh, guess it DIDN'T WORK?
NO UPDATE as promised in November 2019
Yes, i'm sorry. I'm still planning to post an update, but didn't do a lot of riding due to winter and covid after that. So not to much experience with the float. So far I can say the float is working to some level, but drops fast after half a tank and is at zero too fast (400km).
None of this shit works BMW should correct this problem properly. Will never own another one period.
