Hector Celaya The Maico 700 has a power valve whereas the CR500 doesn’t. This means that it actually has smoother power delivery and is easier to ride than a CR500. The Maico 700 really would be a great woods bike given it’s relatively tractable power and massive torque.
GyroPyro12 the older air cooled cr500s didn’t but the newer ones (AF) are water cooled with power valves. They actually have a huge range of motor tunes

David Bru it was missing a lot of parts when I started plastics, top end needed a rebuild, ignition was cooked and so was the carby. Got a VAPE ignition and a Lectron new plastics, top end rebuild still trying to get the ignition work properly. Had it on the dyno made 64nm of torque and the timing wasn’t advancing will be interesting to see when it’s running full noise!
I downsized from a 96 KTM 550 MXC to a 97 360SX and thought I'd lose power to gain better fuel efficiency. I was wrong... just as much torque with a polar power band. Love my 360!
I would go out of business because I could never bring myself to sell most of these bikes you guys find! I've had a soft spot in my heart for KTM since I was 6 years old and drooled over the new 1996 50ccs. If I had the money for it I would buy this bike in a heartbeat for any price.

This is my daily single track bike. Had it for years and years now. Fires up first or second kick every time. Other than changing the oil and spark plugs, and some rattled out bolts, ive never had to do anything to it at all. Has been insanely reliable. The clutch handle will wear out hour hand though so recommend hydro clutch conversion. I can barely move my hand today because I rode it for 4 hours yesterday. Mine looks well used however lol
Still have my 96 KTM360 MXC I bought brand new and will never get rid of it and just now had to tear into because the Power Valve was acting up, piston and cylinder still look almost look like new.

I owned a 1996 360 and had nothing but problems with it. KTM took the 300cc mass produced case and upsized the piston to get a 360cc. When they realized it had problems they built a upsized case and increased the piston to form the KTM 380. If you ever have the choice get the 380.
All dirt bikes rocked in the late 90s. I got my first 2 stroke in 97 a rm 80. I sat on Paul Edmonsons rm250 that day October 1997. I had a fever with chicken pox popped my first wheelie too lol

My friend had that bike and I had a brand new 2001 CR250 and we rode in WA state. That bike was the balls. Perfect 2 stroke size. I loved it. I've always wanted it since.
"KTM doesn't make large displacements anymore. Nobody does". Maico makes a 500, 620 and 685 (700) still. Zabel makes a 700, all 2 strokes (zabel for side car racing, 14 time world champions).

I had the same 97 360 back in 2000 and it was incredible! It turned pretty slow but the ohlins shock and marzocchi fork are still the best I've ridden. I loved it so much I bought a 2000 Ktm 380 with pds shock and it was horrible. I could never get it even close to the 360. That bike rocked!
@@dylanbenker2043 back in 2000, there were no good PDS shock fixes. That shock was horrible and no amount of tuning would fix it. Nowadays the PDS is really good in comparison.
Yeah, me too.I had '99 exc 300, it has very torquey linear power but still pretty scary on the pipe. Since i got used to it and my 300 did not scare me as in the begining i always wanted to try 380 or 360. I never rode one but heard they are both monsters and a big step from 250s even 300s.
That rear tire looks big with those black rims. The bigger tires if so slow them down like a flywheel. We have a 98 380 and it wheelies like that also, they are fast
I've ridden modified 500 2-strokes before. However I will never forget the first time I rode this bike. Never have I ever experienced a harder-hitting power band in my entire life of riding dirt bikes. This bike will yank your arms off with ease. It's a monster. No comparison to any 250 or even 300 KTM 2-stroke. Way snottier and harder to ride.

@@dylanbenker2043 yeah I never got to see the 98/99 380 sx I've heard about them years ago, I also forgot to mention my yz450f isn't an average 450 though I'm running an athena big bore kit 5.0 oversized to 102mm so she's a 500cc well 497cc to be exact and I'm still yet to see a bike get in front of me. I kinda kick myself in the ass though cause now there's the 588cc big bore stroker wingman it hit's 81 hp on mild pump gas for literally $300 more then I paid for the athena and they also got a 610cc and thumper racing also has a complete drop in motor at 662cc.
How about the KTM550 2 stroke left kick ? I've ridden one of those and that bike is insane! Do you guys have one of those or have you ridden one ? The guy who owned it put a pipe in silencer on it and tuned it and it was so powerful he took it back off. Those big bore bikes are great for the dunes!
My god this thing is sick. I had one bout blow my ear drum out while it was passing me at Moutaineer Raceway. It was this model and his friend had the 520sx four-stroke which was also crazy loud. Beautiful bikes.

Picked up the EXC a year ago. Got the title and it’s plated. Big bore two stroke ripping thru traffic. Tons of torque pulls hard right off bottom.

Dyno Ports pipes are/were some of the very very best period. Great power and combine with shorty silencer makes unbelievable sound on 250’s and up
Love it I have A 96 360 EXC had it since 2014 it's fast and fun as hell. I agree that I prefer it over a 500 I run an iridium plug and it screams.

You have to change the spring to an 8.4 weight and there's an oil collection problems on the 380 you have to drill it out somehow
