Should've listened to the one from A Live One. It's perfect and they can't really play it like they used to.

Its a song about eastern philosophy. The wheel of fire and rod is human made, like a blacksmith. The big wheel is God, its the wheel of samsara. reincarnation again and again until you push yourself each life a little further and closer and closer to truly seeing the world as one and seeing God in yourself and others. The philosophy that inspired this song is that this circle of life is all of our journeys and when we are in a life where our soul is perfectly in tune with love, then the lighting bolt of enlightenment and Gods love will reveal itself as ourselves. So try a little harder and go a little bit further than you've done before to be a compassionate person even to the people you dislike

The step forward is just for dramatic effect in the stage performance. Sometimes they go into a jam between China, cats sunflower and I know you rider the last for an hour and the step up calls everyone’s attention to the fact that I know you rider is starting. it’s a very beloved, cherished song by deadheads. The combination of these two songs is one of the highlights of the concert.

They step towards the mic when they’re ready to sing, so everyone knows the solo section is ending.

My biggest complaint about China>Rider is that they always go to Rider too soon. I love the funky syncopation of China Cat. 13:13 they step forward to their mics when they need to sing. The rest of the time they are back from their mics just jamming. There’s nothing deeper to it than that. 18:11 next I would suggest either the studio recording of “Ripple”, or the live performance of “Morning Dew” from the Winterland Ballroom. Congrats on the new job! I walked around trying to find you tailgating for awhile but no luck. You'll enjoy the shows more intermingling with the crowd rather than being in the VIP area for sure. I was never a huge fan of the song "David Bowie", but seeing it live for the first time blew me away. Love it now :) Take care and look forward to seeing some new vids when you get the time.

Once you recognize the closing riff, then you know it's the end of the song. The band can tell pretty much when the jam/solo is over usually when Trey goes down the scale after the peak. That's usually when he plays the closing riff to signal the ending. You'll better recognize it the more you listen. It does get crazy though because in some versions, the rest of the band thinks Trey is done but he just keeps going and it can get out of control (same thing with the ending of Antelope). That doesn't really happen anymore though because they're a bit more predictable in their jams and it's much easier to tell when it's going to end.

I heard the Free lyrics were about a man falling off a ship and getting swept away into the sea...probably bs tho.

Also, tix are never going to be like it was for the Sphere. That was a special occasion and the first time there. Normal tour tix are pretty standard and MUCH easier to get.

These songs are fairly common in live shows: Rift, Maze, My Friend My Friend, Horn, Sparkle, Horse>Silent in the Morning, The Wedge Little rarer: Weigh, Mound, It's Ice Super rare: All Things Reconsidered, Lengthwise, Fast Enough for You

TAB is not Phish and only worth seeing if you like shitty 3rd tier jamband music (or just want to see Trey). Not even close to the same ballpark.

Also they toured w/ the Giant Country Horns several times ('91 &'92) but I don't think they ever had anyone on horns do the "Horn" solo. I could be wrong though.

They've never covered one of their own albums. Closest they came was the one Halloween show I happened to attend (10/31/13) where they essentially debuted their new album (Wingsuit) during the 2nd set (This was the first time they ever broke the tradition of covering a "musical costume" on Halloween). It was a very contentious moment in Phishtory. I was bummed they didn't cover Led Zeppelin or Radiohead but I was also kinda happy I witnessed a special moment for the band and the whole scene in general.

Albums are fine but live shows are so much better to listen to. Hearing the album version of Maze vs. a live version is like putting training wheels on a Harley. It can be SO much better.

Whoever is giving Derek song suggestions should be fired after this one. Coventry Melt is one of the worst things they ever played that some fans are loony enough to actually recommend.

Page and Mike both got better towards the end of the 90s but the interplay between Trey and Fishman was at its peak around 1995. Trey’s tone and phrasing were, for my ears, never better than 1994-95 and this solo is a perfect example.

Its too good to be one take. Sounds great though.
