We are a veteran-owned startup bison ranch in Aitkin County, Minnesota. We love bison! And we want to share ours with you!
We are new to bison ranching so keep that in mind when watching our day-to-day activities as we manage these amazing animals. We will definitely make mistakes! But, hopefully we will learn from them along the way.
Our plan is to expand slowly; adding a few new animals each year. And by doing so we hope to expand upon our knowledge and experience as well as our ability to share those experiences with others.
So enjoy our videos! Watch them, share them and please feel free to leave us a comment!

Yep, We Got Another Project to Keep Us Busy!
Run some pex underground? Our frost line is 4ft in pa dont know what yours is ! Put a heat tape on the riser to the water tank !! Also a drain back at your starting point ! Pex is cheap ! Heat tape is also not bad ! 😮
I was thinking Pex too. Better than PVC. We have to go down minimum 6 foot in this area. But I've got a short straight line between the house and the garage without any obstacles in between so it shouldn't be too hard. Of course, now that I said that out loud… Lol.
@blackaxeranch If I wasnt so far away I would help ya ! I'm a retired plumber! Good luck ! Keep us posted ! Peace !
Thank you! And will do! Won't be doing anything about it until late next spring when the ground thaws out. Until then, we will be hauling buckets! Lol
I was also thinking if they like to scratch like cows do maybe getting those scratching post that look like they belong in the car washes what do you think of that idea?
It's a good idea. Ive seen several large bison ranches use them. It helps them get rid of that itchy winter coat come Spring. :-)
Make your own concrete feeders it will last longer
Thats the plan! :-) He won't be able to lift THAT! Lol
Make your own concrete feeders it will last longer
I still think Ruby has a too large of a parasite load going on inside of her and she needs to be darted if nothing else. If you don't I mean she might be eating but she can't starve to death due to the parasites.
Good afternoon !!! 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Hello!! :-)
What does the vet think it is? Worms maybe?
That seems to be the most common suggestion. If we got lucky and were able to get a fecal sample, we could make more of a determination. But it has also been suggested that at least one other animal would also be afflicted. But we are going to try some feed containing fenbendazole and see if that helps. The only other real possibility is a mineral deficiency which we are also working on. And it is possible that she had a miscarriage…
@@blackaxeranch I hope it wasn't a miscarriage where she was unable to expel the baby and other matter from the pregnancy. I would think though she would have a discharge if that was the case but not necessarily if it was early in the term... I pray she recovers soon.
Thank you! I haven't seen any indication of a miscarriage. But then there just might not be any. I think we need another round of dewormer
Canyou built a frame around feeder and leave the feed tray up so Thor cant destoy it
Another great video and as always, thanks! Hope Ruby recovers and I know you're working with a bison vet/doc to see what's up with her. All my best
We have, but even they are stumped. It would be easier if we had a squeeze chute but that's a little further in the future for us at this point. Thank you for watching! :-)
Keep us posted and keeping you all in my thoughts.
Will do! Thank you!!! :-)
It's too bad you don't have a local vet with a traveling squeeze chute like doc Parsons. Have you called him (or Dusty) yet? I know I would. I grew up raising Angus cattle and Suffolk sheep and they are able to be tamed, unlike bison. It's a shame they just don't trust people enough to let people help them. That said, even tamed my cattle and sheep still had ornery moments. A steer once ran me over and broke my collar bone, a ram ran at me from about twenty yards away but I had no where to hide so I stood my ground and let him run at me. I sidestepped at the last moment but a moment too late as instead of missing me, he ran right between my legs, picked me up as he ran and slammed us both into the fence. He staggered as I jumped off and was able to get the hose I was watering the trees with and hit him with a hard blast of water as he set to charge again. I just kept blasting him with the water and he ran away from it into allow me to get up on my porch and inside my house. From then on I made sure I always had a charged water hose line with me when I was outside while he was not locked in his pen... That said Bison are different... I doubt that even if you bottle fed them that they would ever be trustful enough to allow more the scratches yours allow you to give them. I hope Ruby gets well soon!
Great video thanks for sharing my friend the herd looks great
Thank you! :-)
@@blackaxeranch ur welcome 🙏
Strong Prayers for Ruby. Have you tried to give her a vitamin B boost? I think that's what it is called. Thoughts and Prayers. Love and Blessings. Doris, Penrith 🇦🇺🦘
Thank you! We have increased supplements for her. Basically like a multivitamin boost. I think she will be ok, it will just take time. 🤞
@@blackaxeranch That is great. Will keep Ruby and all of you in my prayers. 🤗
On the cold days I'm sure you wish you had a heavy coat like the bison have.
Lol, that sure would come in handy!! :-)
Oh my goodness he has worst mop top I mean I ly because I saw old bold men with bad tupays growing up and his is just so cute though 😂❤😂 so sweet and funny I love him ❤
Lol! He sure has style!!! Thank you for watching! :-)
❤🎉 I'm glad in my area of Wisconsin it didn't get quite THAT cold, you can keep it lol. Their coats are so insulating, do the Bison show any negative reaction to the cold at all ?? Thanks for sharing... 🦬❤️🙂🇺🇲🎄
None whatsoever! They are nice and toasty warm with all that hair and they would be out playing even if it was -40°! :-)
Hi Guys! Love seeing Thore the Mop-head! Do you think Ruby is pregnant? 🦬🦬🦬🦬🦬
Hello back! There is still a small possibility, but at this point, we are thinking not likely, unfortunately. :-( Sapphire, on the other hand, seems to be heading in that direction! Lol.
@@blackaxeranchAwe! Sapphire having a Red-dog this spring, awesome! I hope Ruby gets back to her old self again! MERRY CHRISTMAS to each of you! Remembering, the birthday of the Lord Jesus! 🌟👶🏼🙌🏻🎄 🦬🦬🦬🦬🦬😉

When will you put the roof on? Will you heat the shed?
Not until the Spring. Just didn't quite have enough time to get it done this year. No heat for the shed, but I would like to run electrical out to it for lights. So we will store hay in the garage for another winter it seems...
Great video!!!
Thank you!!!👍
THEY WANT TO EAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Definitely! Very hungry! Lol. :-)
Okay, that first 27 seconds made me super excited! I think that's as close as anyone I've seen has been able to film a semi-panoramic concept of bison body language and behavior in action. (HI! I'm a self-taught animal behaviorist with an emphasis on ruminants.) Bison have panoramic vision which enables them to see all around them (especially when their heads are down). This kind of vision enables them to have constant visual communication with their herd and its surroundings. The pace you're walking, the direction you're facing, and your pauses during that first 27 seconds all have meaning to your bison, and they were responding to it really beautifully. A great shot, thank you!
Sometimes the best shots are when you least expect them! Lol! Very happy you enjoy the video, thank you very much for watching! (and...I learned a little something, too! Thank you!)
lololol they sure walk into the shot!
I think Thor gets jealous! Lol! :-)
Always great to see your bison.
Thank you! And thank you for watching! :-)
Glad Ruby is doing much better. Ha ha they just weren't into apples right away. Thanks for sharing.
Lol, they will love apples come Spring! 🍏 🍎
Good afternoon !!! 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Good morning from Minnesota! :-)
Thanks for the video of Ruby. Thor always wants attention. A little snow makes it look pretty. Thanks for sharing.
Very true! Unfortunately the snow is melting, lol!
Thor is definitely a camera hog. I am happy that Ruby is doing better. I think her belly has shrunk. She doesn't look pregnant now. Still have her in my thoughts and Prayers. Thank you for sharing. Thoughts and Prayers. Love and Blessings. Doris, Penrith 🇦🇺🦘
We were thinking the same thing. On one hand, she was hardly eating all week, but on the other hand, she could very well have miscarried at an early stage. I know some animals will sometimes consume the material that is ejected. Not to sound gross, but that's just the way it is sometimes.
@@blackaxeranch It is not gross what the animals do. It is nature. I am happy that she is getting better. 🤗
Great video thanks for sharing my friend herd looks great I see yall got snow
We sure did, not a whole lot, but enough to cover the ground. However, we've got a warm spell right now that is making it disappear, lol!
@blackaxeranch gotcha are u expecting calves next year
@jermainewyatt1995 we sure hope so, but not sure yet if they are pregnant...or just well fed! Lol!
@@blackaxeranch gotcha
Free Em… Hunt the old ways…Reality we can’t they may give cows 🐄 something that would kill off cows. Keep up the good 👍🏾 work! Keep these special animals alive!
Lol! You're probably right about that! Or vice versa, haha. Thanks for watching! :-)
They seem like a pain in the ass
They can be, lol!
Thor has become a man. He's not a boy anymore.
Lol, I definitely agree!!
Well of course he broke it, it wasn't feeding him!!
Lol! I guess I can't blame him! :-)
Aluminum doesn't stand a chance against bison. Weld a frame out of pipe. Find a company that uses conveyor belts. Maybe they will give you an old one you can cut to use as the feed holder.
Im leaning toward concrete, lol. A good project for next Spring! :-)
Get rid of the bugger because it might not be a feeder he destoys next time it could be you or someone else that feels ❤ his anger but if you want to gamble with your life then carry on and don't listen to someone whose seen a bull go on the rampage i used to be a shepherd working amongst sheep but I had to give it up due to ill health issues but i was working in a lambing field when I saw the bosses charolais bull running along the road and he said let him go hes angry about something the destruction he caused was bloody terrible he took nearly a whole fence out a brand new one at that so he didn't stay long afternoon mate
Definitely advice worth considering. Thank you!
If you didn’t know better you would think he is related to Donbar from Cross Timber Bison lol. Got to love the little snots. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone ❤️🙏🏼🦃🦬
Maybe they share a great grandfather somewhere? Lol! Thank you for watching, you have a great Thanksgiving as well! :-)
Thank you for the video. Nice and entertaining way to start my Monday 😅
Not exactly the way I wanted to start my Sunday morning, but overall I would say it was more entertainment than anything! Lol!
You could try cement feeding truths he won't be able to break it OK thanks Rick from Burlington Vermont 😊😊😊
Hi Rick, funny you mentioned that because I was just saying the very same thing earlier today about the concrete feeder. That might just be a project for next summer. Stronger, more sturdy… And I'd love to meet the bison that could flip THAT up in the air! Lol! Actually, now that I think of it, I would rather not…🤔
Thank ya for sharing that. I'm learning just like people Bison have unique personalities
Very true! Every one is a unique blend of characteristics! Like Forrest Gump says, "You never know what you're gonna get." Lol!
@blackaxeranch I'm preparing my place in SE Kansas to take on three to start. It has been a dream of mine since childhood to have bison
