Come along as I learn and create. Great Canadian North where the temperature are cold and the snow is deep... Until summer.
Beauty, Distress and a Dawn Redwood
This is December. I didn't have a lot of time to do true Bonsai work. After the stress of the holidays are over. I can get back to it!

Stay warm
Nice to get some repotting in. Root system looks good and the bigger pot will help to get these off to a good start.
Good idea to pile the snow around the trailer. That will keep the temperature steady at 32F/0C.
What about a fan to circulate the air in the trailer to distribute the heat? Just a thought.
I don't want to run a second extension cord. That's why I'm looking at solar or wind options.
You might need a back up generator in case the power goes out so that you do not freeze. At least the wood stove gave you some heat.
We have a generator that can power the fridges, freezers, or a room heater and aquariums etc. In the main building. Just not the well pump or things that are hard wired to the panel. I have a small generator for camping that could handle the heater for the trees, but it was stored in the camper and I was not able to get to it. I have since taken preventative measures to stop that door from freezing closed. I wasn't super worried. It has been very mild this winter so far.
We have a temperature this morning of 15F/-9.4C with a windchill of 2F/-16.7C. Definitely an evening cup of tea is in order.
This morning is definitely a tea type of morning here too. -27C/-17F with the windchill, feels like -41C/-42F. It has warmed up to -16C/3F 2pm as I type this. We need some true winter cold. It hasn't stayed cold long enough to kill the hibernating bugs. I haven't been able to go hiking in a couple years. Hopefully this Feb. 2 or 3 weeks of good cold.
You have a winter wonderland. Any chestnuts roasting on an open fire for you? Did you ever find any sapsicles?
No sapsicles. I completely forgot to go look after the wind storms!
@@FrostBiteBonsai Still time. Winter still here. Maybe next time you go for a walk.
Wow, that is some cold I'm glad you got to keep a few Redwoods when it gets cold and the wind howls; bundle up well and watch us it's always above freezing here. I see why you love it the white snow on the Trees against the Blue Sky is beautiful.
Thanks Patricia! I am jealous of your warm down there!! LOL The snow is beautiful though. Have to appreciate it for what it is. Take joy from the things around us, no matter where we are.☺
Hello..iam from indonesia bonsai, i like your video Miss 👍👍
Bạn chia sẻ video rất hay chúc bạn ngày mới vui khỏe ❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you ❤
I love the catch ups in the snow. That floor is looking bad...more work for next year. All the best for you and your family this Christmas. :)
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat Thanks Xavier! I'll get it fixed up. This old camper has a long story. It will live on. Merry Christmas Xavier! Much love and joy to you and your family 💕 Be safe and well.
Crazy weather here. 40F/4.4C at 8:40pm here in the windy city. I like all these winter clips. Merry Christmas to you and to your family!!!!!!
Merry Christmas Tom! Much joy to you and your family! Be safe and well.
Ya swallowed a no see um that made you cough.
FOIST AND TO LIKE
-8C. Get a hot cup of tea to take the chill out of the bones.
Too bad the wood stove could not be on. Would coal keep it lit longer?
@@growclipbonsaiforseniors1951 You can not use coal in a wood stove. And yes I could use it, I did use it. It's unpredictable heat as I don't have and good birch to burn.
@@FrostBiteBonsai What about an oak? Hardwood and might last the night. Just a thought.
@@growclipbonsaiforseniors1951 If it was available here. Birch is the best for burning in my area. Just, a face cord is $200 now. I didn't have time to go out to cut and cure any this year. I've just been collecting fallen trees. I still have all the poplar that was cut off the front of our property. That smolders nice, but sometimes it over heats. Makes a ton of ash. What I ultimately want to do is go off grid there. Solar panels and wind turbine. Then even if the power goes out. It will still be heated. I'll have lights too.
Brrrr! Now that is cold. Do you know the windchill factor? Hopefully the trees survive.
I don't remember, I think it was about -7C colder one day. -13C colder the really windy day. With everything I sealed up so far on that trailer. The heater can hold -6C/21F when it is 25C/-13F or lower. There is still more to do to improve that.
Sad losses. Especially the bougs.
Good Grief! That was a bad accident. Hope your cuttings can survive once you warm up the inside. Don't give up. See what survives. Amaryllis might make it. As long as it is not mushy it will.
You are going to have a White Christmas. A little Bing Crosby music please.
Crassula jades can handle a little freezing as long as the soil is very dry.👍
@@dkstott29 Yes. They actually handled it just fine. Very resilient.
Oh no, so sorry this happened....😢
@@dkstott29 It happened a few times. Finally I zip tied the cord to the plug. I'll have to do better next season. Always learning! 😅
Those little trees came out nice. Marysol, my little pine seeds, seem to do good in pure perlite. Good Show!
@@PatriciaOConnorBonsaiBalcony Thanks Patricia!😊
Sangat rapi tempat tanamanya
Ini tanaman yang sehat dan bagus sukses bibik
Doing the sun on the two will either straighten them out or make a nice bend on them. Time will tell.
The smallest tree with a super amount of roots. You have a survivor with strong will power.
You have some mighty fine potting soil. Trees potted and done. Now for some tea off of your wood stove.
Thanks Tom! I gotta get my kettle out there!
Flowers always a plus for out bonsai.
Repotting time for you. At least you have time off and time to do it. Chores never stop.
Carpenter ants love wet wood...They can be very destructive..😮
@@dkstott29 Yes. At the same time, they help the forest reclaim fallen tree. Aid in decay. We have lots of these and Garden ants around the area. They are also food for amphibians, salamander, newts, Skunk, bears, birds etc. Not a horrible thing. 🙂
Pruning for spring. Cool! I see some nice spring growth for you.
Those 2 GS, nice growth from seed for a year old. They developed a nice root system.
Thanks Tom!
Don't give up on the bougs. If under the bark there is some green, they are in a dormant state and should recover.
Definitely bring in the Poms and the figs. The cold let my pom go dormant. Figs. You would have to bury it deep so pot below the frost line and cover with blankets and insulation. That is what my friend does to his. Safer bet is to bring in the figs. With the cold they went dormant and should be good for you in spring.
I wonder if you could try super glue on the peeling bark so that it is joined to a living piece to see if they will fuse together and save the tree. Just a thought. I would not hurt to try.
We will see if they grow from the root. The tops are definitely completely dead. I'm catching up on Nigel's videos, I see he lost one in the cold too.
Nice dragon..😊
Sometimes, I think protection from the wind and excess wetness is more important than protection from cold temps.. 🤷♂️🤔
Yes! Many of my trees were at -20C or -4F Their first few winters with me. Some had no problem, some didn't make it. I will eventually find a happy medium!!
so beautiful
Slow buy sure on the tree. Have a nice walk with your puppy dog.
Nice work on this tree. Apple pie in the future for Marysol and family.
@@growclipbonsaiforseniors1951 Thanks Tom! I think I got lucky with this tree. The apples are smaller like crabapple, but look like store bought kind and after a frost are wonderful and sweet like an eating apple. If I can get enough ripe ones before the wild animals get them... I sure will make apple pie, and applesauce!
Mushroom soup in the making?
Foist!!!
Wow....
@@dkstott29 Build your own snowman kits, must pick up....🤣
@FrostBiteBonsai 🤪🤪
You really got socked with the snow. Watch your back shoveling. Definitely tea time in the evening. Puppy dog likes the snow though.
@@growclipbonsaiforseniors1951 This is snowfall number three. Few days break and another around the corner. Much more normal winter this year than the last few have been!
Nobody else commented or liked so I will. Bet once the snow melts you have a nice yard for doggo there!
@@JoshCole-h1xThank you! Yes, few more months and it will start to melt. 😊 The snow is very pretty. When you don't have to shovel it. Haha! 😃
Nice job pruning the top. Looking good. Ready for some new growth.
Paper towel. Unlike me you have one. Otherwise I use pants. Did that since I was a kid.
Just a weird coincidence! It must have been in one of the containers I took out there Haha! Shirt and pant wiper usually too!
Now that is one mighty fine looking root system that developed in the pot. Now watching the Bonsai Master, Marysol in action root pruning and repotting.
Are those small button type mushrooms good to eat or are they poison?
I'm not sure! I guess I should have looked them up.
