Try soil with some rooting hormone. Looks like the water is causing mold like the dead one. Nice work on the repotting of these two. Hopefully they develop the red leaves for you.
Cut back and put in full sunlight the poinsettia. Any white sap that is on the branch will cause it to rot. I find in late spring or summer with the sun on the plant after the pruning and dabbing the cut with a paper towel dipped in hot water and then dried, worked for me. Just a thought for you from my experience. People also dip hot wax on the cut right after the cut.
Usually 8 city blocks is about a mile. Enjoying my cup of tea to take the chill out of the bones. 24F/-4C at 7:30pm here in the windy city. With the wind it feels 10 degrees colder. How is the temps your way,.

Thanks Tom!! They are actually starting to flower now regardless, but will do this next year!
I see you have a dollar tree plastic dish. I use them. They work great on the work bench.
Yes! Someone brought us a homemade meat platter and said I could keep the platter! I've had it a few years. They last and are easy to clean!
Try Neem Oil. Good for scale insects also plus many others. Not expensive in the pre-mix bottle.
I'll have to look for some.

The dog barking was about a third that distance. We can hear them from farther in the winter. Once the ground freezes. Pretty neat how that all works.
