  • Crossing the border from Ecuador to Peru there are three main options. I went for the least used and, to me, the most interesting one; La Balsa, the jungle crossing. Leaving Ecuador there is a roughly 50km section of dirt road that is an amazing, beautiful and fun ride through the mountains and down into the Jungle before crossing into Peru. Along the way there are a handful of small villages and you really get a taste of rural Andean Ecuador. The crossing was the easiest I've done to date, I was literally the only person there and with nobody else crossing each side only took about 10 minutes. Unfortunately, once I crossed into Peru I had a bit of a crash, the only time in my life (so far!) that I've dropped a bike on pavement. With a bruised ego and damaged wrist I continued into Peru!
I hope that someone finds this video helpful/informative, or at least entertaining!

Hey, thanks for this video! I'm doing this crossing tomorrow - nice to know where to go now & great to hear there are no copies needed, haha! Hope your wrist didn't hold you back in your travels! Those water things are a pain, I had an almost slide today, exactly the same way. Cheers!

Ah great, I made the video hoping it would help someone out. It was an amazing and fun ride! Watch out for that water crossing where I slid out, I’ve since found out that it is semi-permanent and I’m not the first to go down there 😬

Hopefully the wrist isn't too bad, and putting back luggage wasn't too complicated

Nice video - but could I give you a couple pointers?
    1) Use a chin camera instead, the view is better the angle will be what you look at and therefore more pleasent for us to watch.
    2) Use a gopro ideally with an microphone attachement, which you could then attach inside your helmet so the voice is crystal clear and it avoids a lot of the mufflendeness which is kinda annoying.
    3) Get a insta360 x2 or something like that, so that you can take 360 footage which will show yyou and the dogs running behind hyou for example etc.
    Thats just my suggestions.
Music wise its ok, but id say turn the music almost off or the background noise of riding almost off when showing specific scenes idk ...

Hey! Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to make suggestions; I really appreciate it 🙏🏼.
I completely agree with you on the sound, that is definitely the part I struggle with the most. I’ve had so many suggestions (no music, only music, better mix etc), and that just shows my amateurish attempts aren’t nearly effective enough! I’ll keep trying/experimenting. I do have a GoPro with the silly media mod thing you need to hook up a mic (which goes inside the helmet) that I use. My main problem is that the only time the sound is crisp and clear is when I have all vents and visor closed. In the South American heat that is only doable for about 30 seconds lol. I’ve used a couple mic’s and there is definitely differences between them, haven’t figure out the sweet spot. And they are hard to replace/fix on the road. Tons of other ppl have figured it out, so I just gotta understand what I’m missing!
I actually bought a chin mount (and still have it on the helmet) but on my particular bike with me riding it the video is like half full of the windscreen, it isn’t very appealing to watch and you can’t see much.
I really, really like some of the footage people get with the Insta 360, and it’s a great idea as it would definitely add to the videos. My issue there is two-fold. One is the editing, it is quite a bit more involved to edit, as you need to first edit for direction, and then the clip. So a whole extra step/process in what is already a fairly time consuming task. And then truthfully, when I started out doing this I was hoping to make a bit of money to fund my travels.. I’ve since realized that UA-cam is so saturated and so many people have the same idea that 99% of the time it’s very difficult to actually make any money (without treating it like a job and investing even more). But I also realized that I enjoy making the videos, it’s fun to actually go back and see/use the footage that normally never sees the light of day. And it’s surprisingly rewarding to hear from people that watched and have been inspired to do their own trip, got some helpful info, or even were just entertained seeing somewhere they may never see themselves. But I’m not sure I’m willing to keep dumping money on the newest/best gear just to spend more time on it without an ROI (although I suppose there is an argument that it could make the difference; but I also have a drone that I almost never use). I’ll just keep cobbling together my little trip reports, and trying to improve, for my own satisfaction and hopefully a couple people watch and enjoy hahaha. Hope you watch a few more 😉

Here in the UK we have been getting news reports of gang troubles in Ecuador over the last week so I had been a little concerned for you. Just as I feel happy you have entered Peru I am now concerned about your wrist. Hope it doesn't prevent you from riding. Keep safe.

Cheers Mike, that’s nice to hear you were worried for me! I got out before things got too crazy and the TV station takeover and all. There was rumblings while I was there, but I never felt anything other than comfortable. Man the fall and wrist damage was a surprise though. Held me back for a bit but it’s better now (until the next one 😉). Thanks mate

So, now I am noticing narration while you are riding. Did you add a microphone to your gear? Do you have a guitarist riding pillion?

Yeah got a mic hooked up, it makes it easier to explain what’s happening sometimes rather than trying to remember to explain later
