DON'T TAKE THIS ROAD IN PERU IF YOU ARE AFRAID OF HEIGHTS

Peru's scariest and most scenic road, 8B from Chachapoyas to Cajamarca.
This was the most consistently nervous/scared I've ever felt on a motorcycle. But it is unmissable, and definitely one of, if not THE, best motorcycle roads in Peru.
I had heard about this road and had been looking forward to it for a while. I was not prepared for the sheer drop-offs with no shoulder or barrier, variable road surface (from perfectly paved to rough pavement with dirt on top, to completely dirt/sand) nor the absolute insanity that is the Peruvian drivers. Huge trucks would come flying around blind corners that did not have enough room for two vehicles, cars would come around well on my "side" of the road. I've done a ton of other nerve-wracking and so-called "death roads" before, but I think the combination of sheer drops, tight and blind corners, and most of all the reckless Peruvian drivers, had me on edge a lot of the time. Also, at one point you can gaze down roughly 3,000m (3km) vertical into the valley below, so the sensation of height was the most ive ever experienced. There are a ton of other unbelievable and stunning routes in Peru, with some arguably better or more epic views. But for sheer consistency and hour after hour of spectacular scenery it is hard to beat this road. It is a must do! And at the end of the route, the city of Cajamarca was a great surprise. A beautiful colonial city which was also the site of the battle that decided the fate of the Inca Empire and also hosts the "ransom room", where the last Incan Emperor paid the conquistador Francisco Pizarro for his freedom.
