Mick's Succulents
Australia
Приєднався 28 січ 2020
Hello UA-camrs and Welcome to our Channel!
I'm Mick and together with my wife and two daughters we run a small family operated succulent and cacti nursery in Mudgee, NSW, Australia. (Ok to be honest the girls don't help that much but they are only 5 and 1! They try haha!)
I'm a qualified Horticulturist, Nurseryman, and Landscaper and have been in the industry for over a decade. Throughout this time I've managed several retail and wholesale nurseries. In 2016 I began propagating succulents in my Illawarra backyard for fun and before long I was hooked! Since then my hobby has turned into a full blown succulent obsession!

How do you keep mealy bugs off of so many succulents?
Came for the succulents, stayed for the chemistry between you two
Great Info.
What is the other name for the granite you mentioned? I would like to request information or pictures of granite. Thank you
Very helpful info. ? Crackling rustling background noise is very intrusive and distracting.
Just skip Shaviana, 'Neon breakers' is an hybrid, not a cultivar.
Unless I missed it you didn't mention if you should mist your propagations in the cell trays?
Can I buy some of your haworthia from you to add to my collection
Hi Gary, thanks for your comment. Are you in Australia?
@@mickssucculents no
Aeonium sunburst is hard to propagate
Can be quite a tricky one sadly 😔 it doesn't give much material to propagate from.
the rabbits here just love these. They are eaten to the roots the day after planting. Protecting them keeps them alive until the protection is removed.
So helpful! Your plants look gorgeous btw!! I know this is a necro comment but this video particularly helped me with my seed harvesting learning
Where is the planting video?
Hi Mick, your videos are great - thanks for sharing them! Can you pollinate a flower with pollen from the same plant - or do you need two separate plants? Thanks!
I'd like to try pollinating a creeping Sedum species like Album, Sexangulare, Hispanicum, Lydium or similar with stored pollen from a crinkle leafed Echeveria 'Cheyenne'. Any tips by any chance? Are Sedums, Echeverias and Graptopetalums even generally compatible or is that rather the exception?

What is the pottibg soil mix, sorry im a newbie
@soji-yeunmochi-con1162 Hey, that's all good 🙂👍 we use a Succulent and Cacti potting mix. It has much better drainage than other mixes and has been good for Lithops. Hope that helps 👍
I don't have access to those, are those readily mixed? Can I use masonry sand and gravel as water can easily go through it, I'm really sorry for these questions, I'm really a newbie
@soji-yeunmochi-con1162 that's ok. Most nursery/garden centres should have a Succulent and Cacti potting mix. If you can't, then try using washed river sand and gravel will work. If you can add some sort of compost to the sand and gravel, that would be ideal 🙂👍
Can you please suggest shade cloth for 30-35 °C (86-95 °F) Summers? Based on your video I am thinking of 50% white as I need it for outdoor succulents (mainly Sedums, Echeverias, Crassulas and Pachyphytums) without a greenhouse. Spring is only 20-25 °C (68-77 °F), do I need a different one for Spring or do I need any?
@hannabudai273 50% white will definitely do the job for you 🙂👍 it should also be fine in Spring too 😀
Thank you so much!
@@hannabudai273 your welcome 😀👍
Really enjoyed the video do you get mealy bug in Australia they are a pain in England
Hi William, we sure do get them here sadly 😞
I only have one plant thats sending up just one flower bud! Can you pollinate one plant with its own pollen ?
unfortunately not:(... Self pollination for lithops is quite difficult (sometimes even from a Cluster)... You need a second flower.
And here i thought the white dust on my new succulent (from bunnings) was normal 😅 smh haha its quite thick since I've had it for a few months now, would this solution still work? Or is it best to bin the plant and start again? Lol because now im noticing it travel to my other succulents ( im in qld also)
You can apply it at any time. The ones that have had it for longer and have more damage should grow out of it 😀👍
SE Qld'er here. I keep seeing lots of conflicting info on when these guys are dormant and growing. Have seen other southern aussies saying Echeveria are active in winter. Written articles online are worse, and it doesnt seem to matter if its american or australian, there is no consistency.
Thank you for this video, sir! It has helped me as a US grower understanding this plant!
Your very welcome. Glad to hear you found it helpful 😀👍
I have an indoor echeveria that has flowered every spring. Is it possible for it to produce viable seeds without pollination?? There are seeds in the dried stalks I have.
Thank you! I couldn’t find a video on separating the bulbs until yours. This was so helpful!
Your very welcome 😀👍 glad to hear you found it helpful.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you 🙂🙏
Congratulations ! 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much 😀🙏
Why not set up the tripod so she can talk too! Little distracting when the director is talking over the person in front of the camera.
Again ! THANK YOU ! 🙏 👍
Your very welcome 😀👍
I enjoy your video very very much ! YOU DID GIVE ME ALL THE ANSWERS TO MY QUESTIONS ! I have subscribed your channel right away ! The best thing is to mix the seeds with sand ! Thanks again from Hong Kong ! 👏👏👏👏👏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Can you do more on sempervivums? Cross pollinating?
If the out leaves are extremely overwatered from the store I purchased from and new leaves are fully formed and still can’t absorb them, can you cut off part of the old leaves to help?
Bump, having this exact situation with three of them! They are practically done splitting but there’s still so much water in the old leaves…shriveled a bit but still
Can you do a video on sedum?
Sure 🙂👍
When you head chop an echeveria, do you cut the entire rosette and just leave the stalk? Will it really sprout multiple new rosettes from the top? It feels a bit scary to chop the head off of my beautiful plant.
I like to leave them bc the flowers attract lots of hummingbirds. But now that I know they propagate well, I might need to expand my collection.
The birds that come in the nursery to feed on the flowers are nice too 🙂
I’d love a video that breaks down the different varieties and when each is dormant/growing so I can make a chart. 😊
I have mealybugs on my attenuata and can’t seem to irradiate them! The bugs hide deep between the leaves and it’s hard to treat. I’ve tried a bit of rubbing alcohol diluted in water which usually works on my other plants that have had mealybugs, but to no avail on my attenuata. Any advice??
Loving all the info I’m learning about succulents from your channel. Most of which I own as I’m in San Diego and they are sooo easy to care for here. I found myself incredibly distracted though by that gorgeous arrangement just behind your elbow though! 🥰 would love some videos about planting arrangements and the like. Thank you for sharing!
I’m in the northern hemisphere in San Diego California. When you refer to seasons, are you talking about your local climate in the summer months?
Yes, about our climate here in Aus 🙂
I have these and they are dying can you please help me. I only water them once per day idk why they're dying
Try to avoid watering them daily. Perhaps once a week to once a fortnight. Sounds like they may have died from overwatering.
@@mickssucculents yeah they died 😂
"In my opinion... you should be more careful in separating the child from its mother, because you have already eliminated the other child...
Do you buy seeds and if so , where from? Thanks
I just ordered from Vincent's on Etsy. Good deals, highly recommended! 💚
I don't sorry. I usually pollinate my own flowers and collect the seed from them 🙂
@@mickssucculents how do you pollinate your own flowers?
Does this flower smell..?
From memory I don't think so. It would be lovely if it did 😁
@@mickssucculents thanks for info..🙏🌿
This was so helpful thank you!!
Your very welcome 🙂 glad you found it helpful 😀🙏
do you deal with Cotyledon singularis ?
No sorry 😞
@@mickssucculents its okay!
Do you have to chill your seed first??
Not normally. I usually sow straight after collecting the seed. If I'm not sowing straight away, then i will store seed in the fridge 🙂👍
I would like to try a cross pollination of Echeveria Elegans x Echeveria agavoides
That sounds very interesting! Let me know how you go if you do try 😀👍
Do you put rooting horomone right after you cut them or after it caluses?
Fresh cuts not after callousing
No, I don't really use rooting hormone. I do sometimes use cinnamon on my variegated cuttings to prevent rot.
Thank you so much 👍🇮🇩
Your very welcome! 😀👍
BEAR'S PAW COTYLEDON TOMENTOSA Rare shrub succulent with fuzzy green leaves that are tipped with tiny "claws". Water every couple of weeks in summer, and only about once a month in winter. Loves bright, indirect sunlight
They are always a popular plant and so cool 🙂👍
I have succulent plants that have pups growing but they aren’t the same as yours in the video .. is there a way I can send a video of them too you for advice on how to pot them and care for ???
Hi, you could try emailing us at mickssucculents@gmail.com or perhaps send us a private message on social media with the video 🙂
