Been in Montana a little over a year, but grew up in the desert where yes, you need to be prepared to protect and defend as law enforcement can be far away at times. Great advice and good illustrations on what is needed living up here. Really glad I bought my .45-70 long ago as a basic do it all even dangerous game with the right ammo. Agree you need a big bore revolver with my preferred as a .45 Colt Blackhawk so I can shoot a wide range of loads including +P for Bear defense. Keep missing out on a .41 Magnum which would be my preferred caliber for that task. .270 for me for basic hunting, but nothing wrong with the lever guns like the .30-.30 or even pistol caliber ones like .44 mag, .45 Colt, or .357 Mag which I own as well. Thanks and subbing as I see you even cover like those pocket pistols including .380 ACP or .38 for those summer days or backup.

This list is great, I have 3 of the 5, 30-06, 7mm rem mag and the 300 win mag with the 300 WM being my main go to rifle. I think you nailed it for the most part. I think the 375 H&H is a bit too much for the black tail and the white tail. deer, it really can make a mess of a smaller deer. I dont have a 308 just for the simple fact that I have always had a 30-06. nice list and they all would work well.

A combo gun 22lr and 12ga,a deer rifle appropriate to the location a bolt action for 300 yards max. or a lever action for 150yds. Can be a 357mag if deer are not so big.A lever gun is fast enough for home defence. 16:14 Plus a 357 revolver for town visit. My ammo cache is now simplified. 22lr,12ga shell in buck shot, bird shots or slugs, 357 for the lever gun then the revolver. Lastly my deer rifle ammo if long shots are needed.

Nice, but……. Your dissertations got too model specific and away from what is really needed. Seven is too many must haves. First gun to have is a shotgun to shoot bird shot and slugs (probably a pump action 12ga). Second gun to add is a rifle (probably bolt action in 30-06 or a lever action), Third gun is a 22cal rifle. After this you could add a bigger caliber rifle and a handgun. After the first three it’s all want and not need.

This guy is a snob. You can hear it when he talks about 1 gun owner. His favorite 375 H&H is really over kill for deer sized game. And saying the 30-06 isn't as versatile as the 375 H&H. I guess you have never been to Alaska where both the 308 and 30-06 calibers are used quite successfully on everything that walks on 4 legs.

Got some of everything mentioned, If i had to downsize the collection , I would keep the 338 win, 416 ruger, The 338 la pua is a barrel burner, ok if u know how to fix that. The 480 ruger rifle and hand gun, Because bigger animals drop faster with bigger bullets, The ruger 480 alaskan seems to be the most powerfull for it's size. The 454 casull rifle and handgun Can be loaded down to 357 ballistics . 444 marlin rifle and handgun. The 22 mag rifle and hand gun . The universe will bend to make the rest of the situation work out.

More than 30 years ago I worked on a cattle ranch in Montana for about 3 years. I carried an old Marlin 32-20 saddle carbine for small critters and a Ruger 44 mag for griz. For hunting I've been using a Remington model 798 in 375H&H since they came out. Still my favorite rifle. Before that a trusty old Remington 700 in 30-06.

Not sure where you're based, or your experiences. I worked at the old Morris Sporting Goods store on the 200 block of Central Ave in Great Falls on my off-duty time back in the 70s. Did a lot of business with all sorts of folks, from up around Glacier, down the divide, east to Lewistown, well, we got to meet a lot of folks. One old timer that ranched just east of the divide used a semi auto filled with 22 shorts to kill marauding griz at calving time. My own experience in the time I lived there, Wyoming, and growing up and raising a family in Idaho, I've found a guy COULD live his entire life well, and safely with a 12 ga of almost any flavor, and an '06. Anything else is just stuff to make life easy. I've been fortunate to have acquired an embarrassing variety and number of arms. When my hand reaches into the safe to head out anywhere in the northwest, I take a pre 64 Model 70 270 with 150 Noslers, a 37 Ithaca 12 ga, and a 6" S&W Highway Patrol man. At my age and condition, the truck does all my totin'. Oh, I didn't and won't mention what protects the family and my property......

Hmmm. The penetration is calculated on shooiing a large person wearing heavy, cold weather clothing, all the way across the body AFTER penetrating the arm. Si if I am forced to shoot a street thug in summer wearing a tee shirt it will likely penetrate the thug and possibly would someone down range. Not my first choice, actually. If this is intended for game like bear and such, it is not mentioned and I've never seen a bear in a coat. Nor would I shoot a game animal with a handgun under anything close to normal hunting conditions. All in all, no like.
