More than 30 years ago I worked on a cattle ranch in Montana for about 3 years. I carried an old Marlin 32-20 saddle carbine for small critters and a Ruger 44 mag for griz. For hunting I've been using a Remington model 798 in 375H&H since they came out. Still my favorite rifle. Before that a trusty old Remington 700 in 30-06.
Interesting video... The 10mm is a capable caliber but is the bare minimum for Grizz. Its currently flying high but it won't be long before it comes back down to the realm of reality.
I live in mo my mom was born and raised on crow nation my grandpa had a 10 gauge for around the house a 30-40 for hunting and a 44 mag on his hip I own several firearms but growing up here a 20 gauge and a 243 pretty much takes care of everything we have I do keep a 22 mag as a "garden gun"
Loved the video. I could comment on each on of your choices, but I will try to not be too lengthy: Shotgun - I like a pump 12 GA that will accept 3" magnums. Large Caliber handgun - Your choice of the 44 mag is better than the 357 mag, but that is what I have and will use in Wyoming 10mm - I own a G20 and a G29. Love them both. I carry 200g Hardcast by Underwood when in Grizzly country. EDC Pistol - I prefer something a little bit easier to conceal than the G19. The Springfield Hellcat Pro is what I chose, but the G19 is a great gun. Stopping Gun - Great suggestion. Rather than a large caliber I am thinking about getting an AR-10 in a 308 Win and run Barnes 165g TTSX. I figure that I could get 4-5 shots downrange in the time it would take to fire 2 rounds from the large caliber. BUT, man o man do I love the idea of a 45-70 in a lever action. I would LOVE to have one of those. GREAT VIDEO! 👍
Got some of everything mentioned, If i had to downsize the collection , I would keep the 338 win, 416 ruger, The 338 la pua is a barrel burner, ok if u know how to fix that. The 480 ruger rifle and hand gun, Because bigger animals drop faster with bigger bullets, The ruger 480 alaskan seems to be the most powerfull for it's size. The 454 casull rifle and handgun Can be loaded down to 357 ballistics . 444 marlin rifle and handgun. The 22 mag rifle and hand gun . The universe will bend to make the rest of the situation work out.
12 guage pump shotgun, 357 magnum revolver, 308 AR10, 22 magnum....and that is about all of the guns you need for all of the things. And you have 3 slots to fill with whatever else you want.
I'm from the Mon-Dak region you only need a 9mm, 10mm 44 mag, 12 GA, 22lr and a good hunting rifle, a 308 win or 300 WSM or a 30-06 or 270 win or 45-70 but good video though
Not sure where you're based, or your experiences. I worked at the old Morris Sporting Goods store on the 200 block of Central Ave in Great Falls on my off-duty time back in the 70s. Did a lot of business with all sorts of folks, from up around Glacier, down the divide, east to Lewistown, well, we got to meet a lot of folks. One old timer that ranched just east of the divide used a semi auto filled with 22 shorts to kill marauding griz at calving time. My own experience in the time I lived there, Wyoming, and growing up and raising a family in Idaho, I've found a guy COULD live his entire life well, and safely with a 12 ga of almost any flavor, and an '06. Anything else is just stuff to make life easy. I've been fortunate to have acquired an embarrassing variety and number of arms. When my hand reaches into the safe to head out anywhere in the northwest, I take a pre 64 Model 70 270 with 150 Noslers, a 37 Ithaca 12 ga, and a 6" S&W Highway Patrol man. At my age and condition, the truck does all my totin'. Oh, I didn't and won't mention what protects the family and my property......
Very interesting list. Currently I will have to stay where I am but most of those categories are on my to do list. I have a 22 pistol but no 22 rifle yet. The M44 carbine will do for a basic center fire rifle once I get some work done on it. I have a Super Blackhawk so have the big bore covered. I have no intention of getting a 10mm or any striker fired pistols but I do have a traditional DA 40. Between the 44 magnum and a hard cast 40 load I think things will be just fine. I have the 38 snubbie already. I plan to get a 44 lever gun to go with the SBH which ought to be plenty for a stopper. I wouldn't be averse to also getting a 45-70 too. You really can't have too many shootin irons after all. A double shotty is on the list as well. Fortunately you aren't requiring a SWAT team rifle like so many YT guys find mandatory. 😉😇
It isn't always so easy to get off quick and accurate shots. I carried a 44 for decades, and I noticed, everytime I took a break or had some chore to do, I slipped the whole rig off, and laid it or hung it somewhere off of me. I slowly moved to a doable compromise that still has good penetration behind it. Every fall, where there's good bird hunting, there's bears trying to fatten up, and some of them have cubs, no doubt.
Check out our video on the fastest bear guns. The 10mm was way more accurate in rapid fire than bigger rounds. Power is nice, but as the Pirrelli ad used to say, "Power without control is nothing."
Good list, and great commentary. If it's okay, a light recoiling long range utility, vermin rifle is not a bad idea. Two option, fun categories that fit right in, first an AR platform do-all rifle, even though I steer away from them, and second, though pricey, a classic or two. Old Wichester, Marlin, Savage lever rifle, or Sharps, Winchester, etc. single shots are held in well regard.
It might be that I look at Montana I have lived in Colorado my whole life but I hate the democrat gun policy’s and more I am already pretty much retired so I am probably able to move and I have enough firearms that is why I am hating the government here
you dont need any more or different guns in Montana than you need anywhere else. A silenced, shorty AR in 223, with night sights, scope OPTION, trigger job, 22lr conversion unit, 60 gr Nosler partition softpoints, 60 gr aquila subsonic 22 ammo, a kahr CM9 pocket 9mm and a pocket 22 and airsoft to train with, so you dont wear out the pocket 9 Get the Taurus PT22 or the Ruger LCP .22, but dont trust EITHER of them for defensive use. Use Liberty arms 50 gr, 2000 fps, low recoil, 450 ft lb solid copper hp 9mm ammo. Nobody needs to shoot big animals at more than the 100 yds or so that you can brain them with the AR. Nobody needs to hit birds on the wing. You just WANT do so so, that's all. You want Taylor Swift in your bed, too (probably) but you dont NEED her.

Long time resident. 7mm for everything from elk to antelope. 17Wsm coyote to gopher and 20ga for upland bird, turkey and home defense.

don't wear flip flops if you're a grown man. please don't do that.
I was a long time Montana resident. I had a gun rack made that held SEVEN long guns. I would say a levergun for the working horseman.
Great advice! When I first found this video I thought you were someone else. The Boss of the Swamp youtuber. You look a lot like him,
Yes, and Robert Redford gets mistaken for me all the time. Cheers.

Hey great list. These would be good for any western state. Even UTAH. 😜
True. Thanks for watching.

Sure like your back drop🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
So do I. Thanks for watching.
If I'm worried about bear defense, then I'm carrying a 44 mag or bigger. I wouldn't trust a 10mm if my ass is on the line with a bear
I agree 100 percent! Well said!
I carry a 10mm if I am carrying a rifle. If not, 480 Ruger.
12 gauge shot gun with slugs.

Obviously, you are a person of good taste and high intelligence.
A big bore revolver for a grizzly? Just double checking.
Seems the 10 mm covers for three hand guns if you can't afford three.
I was with you until you chose the 10mm. The 10mm is a fine choice but I choose the 460 rowland on a 1911 frame

Ar 15 wasn't on the list!!! Montana is still America damn it!

You would be welcome in Montana. Just know the housing prices are INSANE if you can find a place for sale.
Thank you "Captain Obvious"
You're welcome, "Lieutenant Churlish."

Taylor swift is one if the last chicks i want anywhere near me.
No, pocket is a terrible idea. There are plenty of inside the belt holsters to securely and responsibly carry.
What may not work for you may work fine for the rest of us, and vise versa.
