The Crossway Bible Design That Made Me Switch From KJV to the ESV
What made me switch from using the KJV going into 2025?
Crossway are the leaders in Bible Design, from the Print, Paper Quality, and Cover Design. The ESV is a great translation, but I have always stuck with the KJV and NKJV, recent years diving into the NLT which I really enjoyed.
But going into 2025, I would like a New Translation; one I have never read or preached with. The ESV seemed like the natural choice.
In this video we will show you;
1. How to Change the Ribbons
2. Preventive Maintenance for Longevity of the Bible
This is what I always do when I begin to use a new bible.
We will also take a look at the Crossway ESV Large Print Wide Margin, which is my bible of choice for 2025.

Why Use The ESV When We Have The NKJV?

Taking up the Challenge to use the ESV Translation, as a man who uses the NKJV, here is my conclusion; If you prefer the Critical Texts, use the ESV. If you prefer the TR, use the NKJV. The ESV is a great translation, but for me personally, we have the NKJV, which is the best balance of readability and accuracy. The ESV translation to the Critical Texts, is the same as the NKJV to the Textus Re...

How to make a Bonded Leather Glued Spine Bible LAST! Two Easy things you can do.
I used neatsfoot oil for years on boots, saddles, etc. until I tried baby oil. Much cheaper and works great to soften and also waterproof.
If you want a full yapp then what are the measurements?
I like raised hubs. After having watched your videos I "thought" I understood enough and I took apart a vinyl covered Ruckman Reference Bible that is not smyth sewn. I got the tools and materials and started. I think I got the outer leather measured okay and I added hubs to it and a cross on the lower right hand side with leather strips and tooled them in. Then I set to work on the liner and I think I didn't understand things at this point. My fold overs are all bad, my corners are a mess and its not the bad technique I used its the measurements that I don't really understand. As you go through the videos which are helpful I don't get a clear explanation of what each mark and line are. I'm just not a visual learner. I need a written guide AND pictures lol. Anyway... from the outside the Bible looks great. Its the inside when the paring of the liner and leather and corners are visible that its... not so good. For a first attempt its ok-ish.
Oh... I also rounded the square corners of the pages and added red color that came out perfect. Added ribbons and super reinforced the spine. This book will not fall apart. Its just the awfulness of the insides =(
Question, I purchased a new Thomas Nelson NKJV WD in a nice trutone cover. I worry that the paper paste down liner won’t last. Can I paste down a thin leather liner over the existing paper liner or add strength? Will this work?
Great tutorial. Thank you!
What tips do you have for paper liners?
Never used paper liners before, so I'm not much help there! My apologies.
Hopefully Thomas Nelson will listen to these critiques. We need more NKJV layouts. I agree with you on the embossing on the spine too.
Where ya at in Cali?
King James Holy Bible is the pure and perfect word of GOD,purified and preserved by GOD Himself and is mathematically perfect. Coming from the correct line of manuscripts and texts. All thesemodern new age bibles add subtract scriptures, words, changing meanings, taking away the deity of JESUS CHRIST in many places. Nothing like a king James Holy Bible to clear up a college education or clear you up and expose false doctrines coming elsewhere!
Congratulations! You are the 1000th KJVO comment. You win a free NLT Bible, email me to claim your prize.
You know I love a good premium bible but with toddlers running around the stress free reading my hardback Cambridge Diadem gives me is...excellent.
Ain't that the truth! A bonded leather diadem would be awesome, cheaper than calfsplit, if they had one id get it.
All languages have words with multiple meanings. When God had the bible(KJV) translated he gave us the word “count” not “calculate” Rev 13:18 (KJV), the word “pale” not “green” Rev 6:8 (KJV), the word “heaven” not “heavens” Gen 1:1 (KJV). For all any body knows the text the scholars use are perverted versions of the true scripture given to the last spiritual Israel Rev 11:8 (KJV), before the last tribulation (pit). It is God that decides what truths and lies are passed on beyond the pit. Do you deny the ability of God to give his true preserved word to the nation he raised to draw his adoption to. The only proof you have that the Hebrew that you read is truth is because scholars told you so. 26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: 27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 1 Cor 1:26-27 (KJV). You have to have some kind of endorsement from God, and the last endorsement God gave was the KJV to the last and greatest and most powerful nation this world will see. All glory to God. Amen
There is not a power that is not given by God. Through providence God raised up the most powerful nation there ever was or will be, the U.S.A., and in its infancy it was given the preserved word of God; “Robert Aitken, a Philadelphia printer, was the first to publish the first American edition of the K.J.V. New Testament in 1781 and the K.J.V. Old Testament in 1782, omitting the Apocrypha. On completion, he petitioned and received from the Congress of the Confederation, an official endorsement that Aitken added to the binding of his Bibles, to assure colonists that they were buying a non-royalist edition: “Resolved, that the United States in Congress assembled… recommend this edition of the Bible to the inhabitants of the United States and hereby authorize him to publish this recommendation.” As a result, the Aitken Bible (KJV) is often referred to as “The Bible (KJV) of the Revolution.” The nation was given the KJV, not the dead sea scrolls, not the book of Enoch, not Hebrew books etc. but only the KJV. If God wanted us to understand his word in Hebrew he would have raised this nation up speaking Hebrew. Back in the 1600’s God saw to it that the certain scriptures were translated into English “KJ Bible” and was put into print so that all could read for themselves the truth that in in the scriptures. God did this because he knew that he would bring about this powerful nation [U.S.A. and the English language] of ours to lead the world. The scriptures were written by apostles and prophets inspired by God through the Holy Ghost. The compilation and translation to English was also done by the direction of God through the Holy Ghost and he did not make any mistakes, i.e., the fourth horse being “pale” was no mistake, the horse is not green. In Greek mythology, the name Chloris (Khloris Χλωρίς, from khloros χλωρός, meaning “greenish-yellow,” “pale green,” “pale,” “pallid” or “fresh”) appears… Pallid 1. pale; faint or deficient in color; wan: a pallid countenance. People say that they believe that scripture was written by the direction of God and the Holy Ghost, which is true. But what you people don’t seem to realize is that the compilation and translation of the bible (KJV) was also done by the direction of God and the Holy Ghost. If the bible (KJV) was written and compiled by men of opinion and perspective and translated by incompetent translators then you might as well throw it in the trash. The prophets were told what to write and how to write it, 2 Peter 1:20-21 (KJV) The nation was given the symbol of the Eagle, 37 … Wheresoever the body is, thither will the eagles be gathered together. Luke 17:37 (KJV), the body being the Church, the body of Christ. The nation has the motto and preamble “in God we trust” and “one nation under God”. This greatest and most powerful nation the U.S.A., has been given the last and best chance to lead the world to heaven on earth or destruction. But like all other nations of power before it (symbolic Israels, Rev 11:8 (KJV)) the U.S. has chosen destruction and is now the great “liar” saying “in God we trust” and “one nation under God”, it is now the conglomerate of the dragon, beast, false prophet, and harlot, it is Satan loosed from the pit, 7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, 8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth Rev 20:7-8 (KJV). And yet no one seems to know of or speak of a very clear fulfillment of prophecy in our recent history. We (U.S.A.) are the ones who brought down fire from heaven in Aug. of 1945 and we are the ones that gave life to the image of the beast in May of 1948. Rev.13:13-15 (KJV). All glory to God. Amen
This really is a great Bible. When i was looking for a KJV a few years back this is the one i ended up going with. I got the deluxe leather soft with thumb index version. Really is great.
What's the Cost?
Nice choice. My Bible for 2025 is going to be the Humble Lamb NLT SonRise :) (then probably back to the NKJV i got mid way through 2024 haha)
Ill be reviewing that bible as soon as I get it! Really excited about it, there aren't any premium NLT bibles.
I'm with you on having Holy Bible on top. That is more important than the translation or publisher. Not a fan of the NKJV comfort print either. But I seem to find reading the KJV comfort print in a smaller size ok. I'm curious to see how you'll like the ESV.
Great tips, thank you!
Crossway is not even remotely the “leader”. They’re actually at the bottom of the pile after Schuyler, Allan and Cambridge
Certainly! A High End Bible should beat a mass produced bible.
Oh yeah 👍🏼 ❤

Wow thank you
What do you think about the difference between the wording of Luke 4:18 in the KJV, NKJV, NLT and ESV? I think the exclusion of "came to heal the brokenhearted" is a significant loss to people as everyone on the planet has had their heart broken at some point. It is a grand starting point to evangelize and let people know that Jesus came to heal the brokenhearted. I think that is important to point out whenever I give a Bible to someone or read the Bible with them. I did contact the general editor of the ESV (and other translations/paraphrases) and ask him why the phrase was omitted. I don't remember his exact response, but none of the editors could say why the brokenhearted was eliminated by their editors. Interesting.
All modern translation have the same rendering removing that part of the verse. So to be committed to a different translation past the NKJV, it's good to be aware of these differences and decide how to deal with it, either to agree it should be removed or pencil it in the text and continue to use the translation.
@@Keep_preaching It would be interesting to know what the criteria was for most of the modern translations to remove that part of Luke 4:18. The general editors of the NIV, HSCB, and ESV could not articulate a reason in 2023. I am not being argumentative just noting also that healing the brokenhearted was not was not removed from the verse Isaiah 61:1, the referent verse for Luke 4:18. I read the NLT Bible with American adults who cannot read well. I feel the loss for those who read the "easier" renderings but may never see or hear that Jesus came to heal their very own or others' brokenheart.
Just discovered this channel. I switched out some ribbons on a Bible after watching this video, which is something I always wanted to do but had never attempted. Thanks so much!
Good for you in keeping your mind open to reading other translations and not being a purest. I read all the translations ESV, KJV, NKJV, CSB, NIV, NLT.. NLT is my fav
The Catholic Church in the UK just switched to the ESV too. You are on your way home brother
Very interesting! I had not thought of the prep part of a new bible 😅 going through the Bible completely this year I am sure some of this will help alot!
I was just planning this exact repair on NEB from 1972. I watched your Bible rebind video and then this came upon my feed. Problem solved. Thank you. I am going to paint the leather also if you have ant tips.
Keep the ads. It doesn’t bother me
Thank you! Want to have a clean enjoyable experience for those who are kind enough to watch my videos, but thank you for being so kind.
2K Denmark (Klaus Krogh) has their fingerprints in all the best looking Bible fonts today 😊
Dear reader: Never, i repeat, _never_ turn away from KJV.
Lol
Never turn away from Gods Word, no matter what translation your blessed to have.
Awesome to hear someone positively mention the NLT. It's a really good dynamic translation that I personally believe stays fairly accurate while being super readable. I use it as well as the ESV.
The NLT is a great translation. Our church teaches from the NKJV but the NLT is great to reference for some of those harder to understand passages.
@@jimyoung9262 Yep! My Synod uses the ESV which is a great translation but can be a little clunky in places. I love using the NLT for my daily reading and to clear up some of those clunky areas in the ESV.
The NLT I hold in highest regard, it serves to render the Word of God in a way I can apply it. No other translation comes close to what the NLT accomplishes.
@@Keep_preaching Love this
I’ll always stay with the KJV. The NLT literally corrupts the gospel by adding works to salvation and eludes that one can lose their salvation. Come on man, the critical text based bibles aren’t up to par to the standard of purity for the Bible. Masoretic and Received text is the standard!
AMEN!!!
I'd switch to the KJV but they add all these verses
Where does the NLT add works to salvation?
Stick with your own convictions, thanks for the comment!
Where exactly does it add works?
I have this same Bible in trutone.. my question is is it worth buying another in the genuine leather? Or will the trutone version serve me well?
Genuine Leather I feel is definitely worth investing in, its not much more and will last much longer. the Trutone does begin to fall apart, but will last as well, just not as well as a Genuine Leather will. Plus, the look of Leather when its broken in is awesome, and crossway leather will look like a well worn in wallet after some use.
Great instructions
Glad it was helpful!
What is it with Bible guys/theobros and tats? Funny.
All my tattoos are from 15 years ago, before I was serving Christ with my whole heart.
For me, the ideal length of a Bible ribbon is slightly longer than the diagonal of the page. Enough longer so that you can still pinch it between your thumb and forefinger. If you have a page bookmarked with the ribbon, you can then grasp the ribbon and drag it from the spine toward the lower diagonal and lift up to gain access to that page.
That's a cool way to cut ribbons, Im doing that from now on!
I have one just like yours. Brought last spring after I gave the one I had at CHURCH. I love mind very much and easy on my eyes.
It is VERY EASY on the eyes, i really enjoy reading it.
Thanks for the ribbon tip and for all your great content. Enjoy your new ESV. Admittedly, I'm surprised that you're switching to this translation, given the somewhat critical commentary you've made about it in previous videos on Instagram, especially when comparing it to it's predecessor, the RSV.
Certainly prefer the TR, but I feel I can just write in some corrections and I'll be alright. The RSV really does hold a greater weight to me, really love how it renders many scriptures, wish someone produced good editions of the RSV still.
@@Keep_preaching Nelson recently released the RSV in a Sovereign edition. Maybe check that out.
@@Keep_preaching - YT put your channel in front of me today. I'm a Bible translation nerd. I don't know if you'd be open to it, but the RSV2CE (Second Catholic Edition) is my personal favorite. It removed the archaic language from the RSV and otherwise made light edits to modernize some phrasing and make certain passages Catholic friendly (like "hail, full of grace" in Luke 1:28). Isaiah 7:14 has "virgin" instead of "young woman," for example. Of course you get the Catholic deuterocanon, but if that doesn't bother you, I think the RSV2CE is a great translation. For me, it does everything the ESV does. (There's also an ESVCE with light edits and the deuterocanon, but I far prefer the RSV2CE.) If interested, let me know and I can point you toward some options. Sadly, the Catholic Bible world doesn't have a lot of premium options, but there are a few decent choices available out there. Blessings.
Totally agree with you on the comfort print from Nelson. I feel that the beauty of the Crossway fonts gives reverence.
It really is a great type that they use for all their Bibles!
One of my favorite bibles I’ve had it for a few years.
Very cool!
Great looking video and setup!
Glad you think so!
First, thanks for the tips. (I have my own little "new Bible prep" any time I get one and the PVA with needle tip will now be added!) Second, it's kind of funny to me you're checking out the ESV as I had been thinking about giving it another try this year myself. It's a great translation, in my opinion. But, the lack of "little things" (that a lot of people don't even care about) like deity capitalization or italicizing of added words that made the sentence read more clearly, gets me every time and I just end up going back to something like the NASB95. Anyway... may our Lord continue to bless and keep you in this new year and thanks again for the tips and sharing your new Bible with us.
Glad to be of help! I also wish we had italicized words and Diety Capitalized, really one of the main reasons I never stuck with the ESV. But like you said, these are "little things".
@@Keep_preachingReally? Deity not capitalized? Not a “little thing” to me. But I have a compact ESV I carry to work for those frustrating moments during the day. My main Bible for 2025 is John MacArthur's NKJV.
I totally agree about the comfort print-type setting! I don't like it at all!
Yup. I can’t out my finger on it, but I can’t stand it. lol
Right!
Hello from Sacramento CA. Very nice! Happy New Year. Keep the content coming.
Wow hello! Thank you.

This bible was on my list of potential 2025 bibles. But then my wife gifted me a Schuyler Stridon ESV. Maybe 2026 after I go through this bible and mark it up. Thanks for showing how to change the ribbons. I am going to give it a try in another bible.
You can do it!
Schuyler Stridon, great choice. I have the Schuyler PSQ NASB FY
@@BGID7 Nice!
Schuyler Stridon 😍😍
Something interesting you may notice as you read through the ESV is the use of the DSS in the text. Deuteronomy 32 "sons of God", Leviticus 16 "Azazel", and other areas. Its very interesting. The NLT is usually a good match to the ESV especially reading through areas like Job.
Interesting! I didn't know that. Love the NLT, I'll always use it.
I have been using this exact bible with my men’s study group for about 3 years. Very sturdy, the cover is softening nicely and the paper is very good. The font is very readable. I picked up a true tone version as backup.
The paper really is good 👍
ISBN? I cannot find a sewn one....

I know I’m in the minority but i would love a small update to the NKJV.
Your in a very small minority lol
