I'm Bret, I'm the drummer of Canadian death metal band Pillory, and this is my Drumming/Gaming Channel.
*Regarding any drum covers or band covers that I post, I would like to state that I leave all rights reserved to the respective owners.*
I love my Pearls, and I love my Sabians.
My goal is to introduce music fans to music I love, in hopes of promoting the band's awareness to new listeners, inspiring people to play their instrument, and hone my own skills.
Above all else my ultimate goal is to have fun and have a memorable catologue of songs that I can play and be able to look back on, and listen to fond memories of myself and my band mates playing the instruments we love and are passionate about. I'm aware I'm not some prodigy or originator, nor am I trying to act like one. I'm just practicing, and trying gauge my progress. Love you all! Join me on my drumming journey, and I hope you enjoy!
VIdeos with 🐍🔨⚔🖕's are my favourites. Haha.

Do you feel tired? When you step on the double bass drum, it increases power, sharpness, speed, and punching?😮😮😮
Double bass can be very tiring. But once you develop efficient techniques and set your gear up properly to work for your body and not against it, a lot more can be achieved with a lot less effort, like anything in drumming or music generally. If you practice and your gear functions for you, nothing can stop you. Though, unfortunately we are humans and have limits, and it will inevitably be a workout for sure haha. Some peooles techniques are more efficient than others, but we all play differently and learn differently. Also, I started using triggers in the last year. At higher speeds it can make hearing a lot of the sound you lose acoustically in the kicks, much easier, making it easier to hear every impact your making and making it easier to perform those parts without wasting as much energy trying to force a louder acousitc hit and losing your flow. Triggers can 100% help you to use techniques you've learned more efficiently. I still hit just as hard as if I wasn't using triggers, it just gives the kicks a more impactful sound and makes the loss of dynamics in the acoustic kicks at higher speeds more tolerable. Id say 90% of metal drummers use triggers at least on their kick drums and snare in today's day and age. I prefer to use triggers on just the kicks, mixing the trigger sound with the acoustic kick drum sound, and everything else be purely acoustic. Its the most natural sound for me and I love it!
Você toca muito. Parabéns!!! Abraços do Brasil
I try my best haha! Thank you! Hugs from Canada!

Hey, what console are you playing this on bro?
PS5 mang! Gran Turismo is only on Playstation ;)
@bretdrummer can you do online racing? I'll download it on PS plus bro, then we can race each other
@@DOOM.SLAYER666 oh fuck yea. Its kind of a trivial game mode but its fun to race with friends!
@@DOOM.SLAYER666 its Gran Turismo 7* :)
@@DOOM.SLAYER666 thatd be sick dude!
Too jazzy soft sounding no impact...
Ain't that the truth
This is awesome. I almost want to beg you guys to get a mixer and a daw so we can have clear access to what you play!
I almost want to beg you for the funds!$$$ 👀 jk brother i want daws and mics and a mixer real bad. It will be thousands of dollars though. It's sure you know that hahaha. One day. I appreciate you watching and the great compliment my friend!
I want an audio interface with tons of channels or a large mixer going into an interface to a daw. Would be heavenly hahah.
If I wanted to mic every drum in at least one side, I would need 10 mics and 2 overheads at least. Then I would want to mic both my rides and hi hats, which are right beside each other so I'm sure i could make due with both being played with on 1 channel each making it 4 cymbals 2 channels. Then I would need one more input for the trigger module for my kicks. I want a 20 channel board before the computer is even involved haha. Id want it to be powered too so I could use it before an audio interface and switch it to run a PA which I still have yet to obtain. I'm using a Peavey KB100 keyboard speaker for ky kicks atm hahaha. Its all I want!!! Better sound!!! :,( It was a lot of work getting my kit together finally, and then putting diy triggers on it. Funds for upgrades at the moment are not even remotely a thing unfortunately haha.
Would also want to experiment cause honestly I don't know shit about drums or electronic additives I just use the cheapest shit because I'm broke hahaha. I try to make it as good as I can though.
love it! what foot technique do you use?
Thank you sir! I mainly use ankle technique when going fast, low heel up, leaning forward to add more weight for pressure to go even faster, swivel happens naturally when it needs to. Will be working on my left foot forever, but I'm glad in the last year my work seems to be paying off. Mid speeds are (by far the most difficult for me) typically half full leg movements with natural swivel helping to save energy on the right leg with the right leading the way, always heel up. All singles. I realize a lot more could be achieved with doubles or heel toe, but I just don't like how either of them feel. My pedals are at max tension and I swing them from about 40° for extra power, so gaining control is a must for me. My pedals are so tight I almost feel like doubles are extremely difficult for me because my muscle memory is now so in tuned with singles doubles and heel toe feel alien to me. Theres also the potential of throwing about a thousand random notes in there with a mistake with doubles or heel toe. If I make a mistake with singles, it usually ends up being a single mistake. I think they are amazing techniques, I just am not good at them haha. I also like the way way my kicks feel rebound wise regarding the throw and pull of the beater, and don't want to make my bass drums too bouncy due to too tight a drum head. I wanna feel those hits in my chest hahaha. Id rather just do the singles and gain true control of them. To me singles have this unbeatable solid sound, once you get them you sound like a warrior and its terrifying haha. Not to say doubles and heel toe don't. John Longstreth is an absolute monster. Also Rivers Of Nihil's drummer used doubles on the kicks and they sound beautiful. I just like to do that stuff with singles. I have a long way to go. When I hear the likes of George Kollias I feel so intimidated by the discipline I must do my best to try to arrive and hurt people with my double bass just like him! hahahaha.
thank you so much for your long reply, love talking to people playing this kind of music! i can totally understand the struggle with heel toe, but damn your fast as hell "even though" you only play ankle/swivel! it really gives me confidence to see people that dont use heel toe and still play that good. do you have any bpm goals you wanna hit? keep going and cheers mate!
@@idk_niceguy no problem! I appreciate it when i can have interesting conversations with people! I also appreciate the engagement and you watching! Right now I'm comfortable at 235bmp bombing the double bass. I still have to become fully confident with my starting and stopping capabilities and keeping them clean, but I'm feeling pretty good here. Sometimes I'll jump up 10bpm and not hear it until I see the video. Working on tempo as well. I'm trying to push 250bpm so I can write some faster music, but if I can one day reach 300bpm how I play 235bpm ill be truly happy with speed. I have a lot of other things to work on other than speed but it all helps each other to a point. Humbly, I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd be able to do any of this. When I first heard Nile back in the day, It sounded so inhuman I couldn't remotely comprehend what was going on. About ten years later, im starting to understand the basics of the more extreme style of metal drumming, and it feels great. Im no master in any way. I'm learning to use my limbs more effectively and independently. One big thing I wasn't very conscious of in my 16 years of drumming until about the last 3 years was balance. When I started applying quicker succession and more demanding techniques I would have to rely less on my left leg as a balance post and more on my hips and torso. I've been learning a lot especially in the last 6 months. Lots more to come my friend! Cheers!
@@idk_niceguy Thank you so much, and I'm glad to hear it helps you feel confident! Use whatever technique works best for you to achieve the sounds you want the most. Fuck haters hahaha. Papa George always says, "its about the miles or kilometers, wherever you're from haha." Practice practice practice. And never stop. Although I do also beleive in taking a breather and not destroying your brain and body. Challenge yourself, temper yourself, steel yourself. But don't hurt yourself.
Amazing ankle technique!
Thank you so much!
Yeah bro!! Hittin that saw blade 🤘😆 haha. Nice work there bro!
Thanks my dude! I got the idea from you hahah. It actually reminds me of cutting with it, just a clean razor sharp cutting device. I love it man thank you.
@bretdrummer haha, yea.. but hey Tony Laureno is the saw blade king and that makes us awesome for continuing his legacy haha I wonder what made him put a sawblade on his drums in the first place....🤔 Do you work with saws too?
@@DOOM.SLAYER666 he probably dropped it or hit it with a wrench by accident and went HOLY SHIT hahaha. Or he just had drummer syndrome and was tapping on everything in his view and heard that and went "ooohh nice" hahahaha.
@bretdrummer hahaha 🤣🤣 you're fukn crack up man lol that's so spot on with drummers syndrome haha we both could probably relate to that haha 😄
