What Makes Sonic the Hedgehog so Beloved
I was born in 2007, and around 2017, I've seen pictures of Sonic but unaware who he was until in 2020. That's when i discovered who Sonic was thanks to Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 i got on the switch during covid when i was 13. My father was born in 1981 and had Sonic 1 for the genesis he was 10 and a Japanese copy of Sonic Adventure for the dreamcast but had no interest in the blue blur himself. My uncle, who is my mother's cousin, is a huge sonic fan who was born in 1992, and his first game was Sonic 3 and Knuckles on the Genesis and later on owned Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2
I really enjoyed the movie myself, start to finish, and I'll be completely honest, while I didn't outright scream in the theater, I bloody *freaked out* the moment I heard Live and Learn play. My little sister was with me, noticed my reaction and was taken aback by it. Meanwhile, both of us cheered when we saw Amy in the mid-credits, we were both hoping to see her show up, though I also freaked out seeing not just Metal Sonic, but a whole ARMY? I was like "holy shit, someone in there musta fucking LOVED the Brotherhood of Metallix", though seeing Amy steamroll them makes me wonder what we're in for with her story and Metal's. Clearly, those guys have been mass produced by *someone*, and Amy seems familiar enough with them to know both how to deal with them and that they're a threat at all. So I wonder if Amy's lore is tied to Little Planet and its time traveling properties. I've seen people compare the mid-credits scene to a Terminator kinda scenario, like the Metals and Amy are from some point in the future, where one is here to eliminate Sonic, and the other is there to protect him. Man, the one scene left so many questions, but that just makes me look forward to Sonic 4 even more. ...Y'know, didn't think I'd be excited for anything with "Sonic 4" in the name again after what happened last time they used the title..
tbf I don’t blame sonic for absolutely decking shadow and that one scene where he mentions Tom
Yo. Anybody think Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is gonna be more based on Sonic CD?
I'm surprised you didn't mention the Kaiju in the movie Shadow and Maria watched was the Biolizard! Now I need a Biolizard vs Perfect Chaos Kaiju movie using rubber suits lmao.
I love this movie!!!!!! I was needing out the whole time!!!!!!😆😆😆😆😆😆
Movie was a great love letter to Sonic fans. I love Shadow’s arc, Super Sonic vs Shadow and team up, Maria’s backstory, and even Eggman n Stone. If I was a causal, I would give the film an 8 or 9 cuz my only problem with the film is how they written Gerald (I don’t mind goofiness but I wish his fight with Eggman was taken more seriously n got a better death tbh), kinda wish they kept Maria’s illness at least so that her death would be more sad, hate that Knuxs gave Wade the Master Emerald (Could have been a good opportunity to bring in Angel Island but I get it, budget so they can’t do it :/), and wish the 2nd credits only shows Shadow’s ring instead of Shadow picking it. Hell what would have been cooler is if Rouge or Black Doom appeared at the 2nd post credits scene and pick up Shadow’s ring. That would have hype up for a potential solo Shadow project. Still tho as a Shadow fan, naw this movie is immaculate n gets a 11 out of 10 for best movie video adaptation imo. I love it n can’t wait to rewatch 24/7😁🙏🏾
So why did GUN need a weapon that could destroy thier own world? And why did they portray the director who was trying to prevent them from getting the key as a villian? A theory is that she was actually Rouge with a hologram disguise
I saw it yesterday it was so peak
So Shadow is a black arms alien
@sonic23233 I'm Agree You
Great commentary, but you suck at Sonic Generations my god😭
Thanks! Lol and yeah, Generations is definitely not a game I went back to play constantly unlike the Genesis and Adventure games.
I understand how you think characters need to have constant flaws in order to be interesting in film media, however I would like to point out that extremely popular characters like Goku are also examples of flat character arcs, and they're extremely interesting. Going forward, I would like to see Sonic in the movies become totally confident, and change everyone around him, instead of being changed by others. That's what makes Goku and Sonic so interesting. Not that they don't really move in their beliefs or methods, but that they have such a positive and unique effect on the other people around them. It's what makes Shadow start to doubt his evil path in Adventure 2 in the first place.
as someone who completely agrees, I don’t think i really want that character arc for movie sonic. This new interpretation shows us a more vulnerable and emotionally driven sonic and i love that so much, especially if he develops into a more familiar character (which he already has)
1. I'm kind of happy that this felt like a "better SA2" story. I like that there's a believable reason that is not inferred but told the audience that's why G.U.N is after The Team. The only people who are confused are The Team which I think works far better then people mistaking Shadow for Sonic for some benign reason... 2. I love how they don't break Robotnik COMPLETELY. To me, no matter what iteration we are talking about, Eggman, to me, is ALWAYS confident. He believes in himself AND his plans even if that might make him a bumbling fool sometimes. He never wonders to himself if he can get the job done he just knows he can! I like how they didn't deviate from that character and I feel like they did an excellent job with that final act. He NEVER cried, he just kept on going and saw his plan through. 3. NO, NO, NO NO NO. YOU CANNOT TELL ME FOR A SECOND THEY DIDN'T STUDY THE LATTER HALF OF GOKU VERSUS FREEZA AND JUST TRANSLATE THAT INTO MOVIE FORM THAT IS LITERALLY WHAT THEY DID AND I AM SO FOR IT!!! 4. Kind of happy they didn't play the "Silver card". the "Silver the Hedgehog card" is not what you should do in the next movie in my humble opinion. You (the movie team) just REDEFINED the movie series, doing it again in a successive burst might lead to a sense of "been there, done that" FAR too soon. However, at this point, NOTHING'S REALLY stopping them from pulling any Sonic character they want since we've gotten the main ones out of the way so now we can look forward to a potential Cream, Chaotix, literally anything they wanted to pull because they wouldn't have to worry about it being dead weight later. All you would need is a solid antagonist or central driving force that creates conflict and as long as those characters agree with the conflict or cause it, you're golden imo~ THIS IS BASICALLY JUST MY PLEA FOR A CHAOTIX MOVIE OR TV SHOW. YOU CAN DO IT. JEFF FOWLER, YOU CAN MAKE THIS HAPPEN 😭😭😭
24:56 YES! As much as Carrey x Carrey was laugh out loud hilarious, Knuckles had me keeling over with his lines.
9:50 To my knowledge that Chao Garden does not exist, but with how popular this movie is and how well it did, I wouldn't be surprised if one opened in the next year or so.
Yeah, it was a fictional cafe made just for the film. It was really cool, and I'd love for something like it to actually exist someday... but seeing as chao gardens are MIA in the games, this may be the best we're gonna get for a while lol
@@MugiMallard give us a game before the cafe though, wouldn't want the cafe in any random country and no game.
You know this movie is good when Mikey praises it
It's no spoilers for me I watched it yesterday night
7:28 that's the black comet from shadow the hedgehog
@tempest6027 That True
is was the best movie I have ever seen all year beside Deadpool and wolverine 😉😉😉
i liked sonics character a lot in the movie while hes still not one to one with his SA2 counterpart (i dont think that he should be) i liked how they made him way more cockier defiantly the best they wrote him in the movies so far
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Movie yesterday was amazing I loved it seeing Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Dr. Eggman/Robotnik, Maria, and Dr. Gerald Robotnik on the big screen and man it was fantastic and the post credits scene was awesome seeing Amy Rose and Metal Sonic man that was cool I thought we would see Rouge in there but hopefully in the fourth one but man it was awesome I can’t wait to see what Sonic Movie 4 is gonna be? Maybe it could take place in Sonic CD or Sonic Heroes or Sonic 06 or something I don’t know but I can’t wait to see it when it comes out and maybe we could see Rouge in it since she didn’t show up in the third Sonic Movie cause it made sense with Shadow since both Shadow and Rouge made they’re first appearance in Sonic Adventures 2 but hopefully we can see her in Sonic Movie 4 and I hope to see it again cause man it was amazing I loved it.
You know I gotta say I really did like the part where supersonic and super shadow teamed up and they were all fighting those gun robots but you know what I thought would’ve been interesting for them to fight to make it more challenging, Is that blue liquid monster from the space stages of sonic adventure 2 battle and I can imagine his form in the movie starts out a big metal head flying towards them and then finally unleashes It’s blue liquid for its body and arms as it fights the two super hedgehogs that would’ve been awesome
I got to see it today man, that movie rocks and absolutely insane!!! It was worth to feel the Sonic Adventure 2 vibes again!!!!
I screamed a lot seeing it last night, That’s how much I freaking loved it!!
And I bet you screamed at the post credit scene did you?
I knew you would love it
I have four things that really stood out to me about this movie. 1.I liked how Sonic and Shadow can just breathe in space when they're on the moon.Really does show how much they care about the Sonic franchise. 2.Tails got a lot of screentime and had a lot of really cool moments, his voice acting by Colleen was really good too and much better than how Colleen sounded in the Sonic Generations rewrite. 3.That montage with Shadow and Maria playing was just adorable, especially that part where Maria was riding Shadow with a rope on her roller skates through the lab like a sled. 4.Crazy how they not only had the movie version of Eggman die,but had his last words say how much he valued Agent Stone, hope Stone actually becomes the new Eggman as that would be sick. Wow,what a wonderful movie.😢
I already knew That the second I saw the credit scene The next movie was gonna be PEAK
No Jim Carrey so that's up in the air
It was very good also nice video MugiMallard
I saw it. I was best movie for this year for me
It's kinda cool! But, I saw the movie yesterday and it went freaking wild!
If you guys have seen it by now, what are your thoughts on Sonic Movie 3? And what would you like to see in movie 4 besides what we saw during the mid-credits sequence?
I don't know but, I wanna know who's gonna voice amy.
IT WAS AWESOME! 😎 People were cheering & screaming at the post credits! Everyone that came to the theaters went for Sonic Movie 3
I’m hoping for the 4 movie we see sonic going on an adventure to another world with tails knuckles and her new friend Amy Rose to find out where the metal sonic’s came from
I realize it was such an interesting story seeing how sonic and eggman teaming up even though there was a good chance he would betray them but near the end they teamed up with him to save the planet from destruction. I also gotta say I love shadows development from a hedgehog who wanted revenge and is annoyed with sonic but then during their big fight and for shadows defeat he decided to accept his fate of being destroyed by someone else’s revenge, but sonic he wasn’t going to go through with that because that’s not like him cause he’s a hero who was born with these powers to use them to protect the people he cares about and shadow was able to see that and remembers how Maria sees him and how he inspired him to care to understand what he has these powers for and what he wants to do with them truly that can make Maria happy and I read it like that part
Absolute cinema the super sonic and super shadow fight was exactly what I needed for this
Back then if you bought a Sega Genesis at least right around the time my parents did, sonic 2 had a coupon you mailed off and got it for free.
I believe Iizuka is spot on when he said Shadow doesn't have any friends. The author's note here being to remind the viewer that not being someone's friend doesn't automatically make them your enemy. The main reason as to why Rouge is so frequent with Shadow is that she's on the "evil" side of things. She's not a villain, but she's not exactly a positive force in the world. Her entire bit is being a rogue kleptomaniac with skills so stellar that the government hires her on contract. Whenever she's not on the clock, she's going about doing her criminal things. Shadow doesn't care about this because he gives no care about the world's workings as a whole, the law is beneath him compared to his personal code of ethics and Maria's promise. As for Rouge, she knows and understands that Shadow isn't one of the goodie-two-shoes like Sonic, Tails, and Amy, so she can settle in his company without fear of legal repercussions, regardless of how he feels about it, and he doesn't mind her being around because he knows that she knows not to get in his way. As for Sonic, Shadow tolerates him as a force of nature, but as one there's no value in putting any trust in something he sees as a dice roll. You mentioned not having read IDW or seen Prime beyond season 1, and in both iterations Shadow shows up right after being on the receiving end of Sonic screwing everything up majorly, giving an initial ire against the blue blur from the get-go and he's ready to just beat Sonic's ass and fix everything himself. He sees Sonic as unreliable, and gets irritated when everyone around him is all "Sonic will fix it, because he always does!" while overlooking the fact that it's his fault that stuff got to the way it was. In Generations, you can (now) see both sides of the story where they have a duel because they're both trapped in this void of history and nostalgia, and they both have their own plans on fixing things and getting out of there, being unwilling to compromise on each other's plan in lieu of their own. I that pretty much sums up the dynamic between the two pretty well.
Sonic X was the only time we saw sonic might have romantic feelings for Amy
I grew up in the 2000s and 2010s. I think I knew about sonic but didn't pay much attention. Then around 2010 my friend showed me Sonic X and I have been a fan ever since. My first sonic game was Sonic Chronicles the Dark Brotherhood on the ds funnily enough.
Wow! We have quite a lot in common with our histories of getting into Sonic. Sonic 2 was my first Sonic game which I got with the Genesis when I was 3. I used to wonder if the game had an end or what it looked like since I watched my mom play it, but she could never beat Death Egg Zone until several years later. I was also told by my mom that I saw SatAM during my early childhood and didn't remember it but I watched AoSTH on Toon Disney regularly until it got removed along with other acquired shows. Sonic 3 and Knuckles was my favorite Sonic game until I got the Adventure games on the GameCube for Christmas in 2003. The weirdest thing about my history with Sonic is that my second Sonic game was of all things Sonic's Schoolhouse. I'm probably one of the only Sonic fans who has a soft spot for that game. While others may see it as a silly edutainment game that goes against Sonic's too cool for school attitude with a Doom engine and badly-aged uncanny character designs for some of the animals, for me, it was my first 3D game, so is used to feel somewhat revolutionary. I used to have fun playing around in the schoolhouse just walking around clicking on some of the walls making them change colors (there was even a time I colored the whole rainbow area pink by doing this.) My favorite parts were the field trip where you got to watch little documentary videos on animals and the statue matching game in the recess area which was where I was introduced to Knuckles a few years before getting the other Genesis games a few years later.
Whoa, yeah you're right!! Definitely a lot of overlap there with us and Sonic, especially Sonic 2, SatAM, and AoStH. I actually never got to play Sonic's Schoolhouse but I read all about it as a kid lol. I thought it looked funny but overall inoffensive.
Heya. Great video! Nice to hear someone else talk about their experiences with Sonic during the 90's and what he meant to them. Born in 86, I was able to experience Sonic as soon as he first came out. Mainly the Master System version until I got a Megadrive a year later (I'm from the UK). I completely understand your obsession with the blue hedgehog. He was all I thought about growing up, from 91 until 96, when I got a Sega Saturn. And, indeed, it is ridiculous how much merchandise there is for Sonic now, when there was hardly any back when he was at the height of his popularity. I've only just a month ago gotten hold of my first Sonic and Metal Sonic action figures. I would have commit murder to have had these back in 1993! It is sad that he fell down the wayside during the Saturn era. Some believe that he would have saved the system, but this is ridiculous. Sonic VS Tomb Raider, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, Crash, Spyro, Tony Hawks, GTA and about 20 other classic PSX franchises? Fat chance. I owned all the Saturn Sonics, mind you, but by that point I was in my mid-teens and was obsessing over just about every Saturn game that I bought. Sonic had to share space with the likes of Saturn Bomberman, Guardian Heroes, Parodius, Sega Rally, Daytona USA, Wipeout and Panzer Dragoon. The same for the Dreamcast era. Too many classics to focus solely on Sonic Adventure 1 & 2. Phantasy Star Online, Shenmue, Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive 2, Jet Set Radio and more. Bought multiple other games throughout the years, such as Sonic Unleashed, but as good as some where, they didn't have the magic of the classics. That was until Sonic Mania came, and it was like being acquainted with an old friend after some 15 years. Now I'm trying to own and play every Sonic title I can get my hand on. Now, look at me rambling like an old man. Thanks for the video. I've subscribed and will be checking out your other videos.
I love it when the games showcase a balance between her sweet and kind attitude and her passionate and aggressive spirit. Her love for Sonic was more of an obsession where she put him on a pedestal and saw him as an idol, not a person. And now that she’s grown up and mature, her love for her is more like that of a friend or equal. And I also loved it when she showed her love for her friends and her enemies.
I've have been a sonic fan since 2010 I was 8 born in 02 my story of sonic is back in 2010 I went to a GameStop and I went into the ps2 section and I found a game called sonic heroes so I got i played and I loved it was 3d later I got sonic riders sonic unleashed sonic mega collection I also remember watching sonic x on the cw I got my first sonic plush at a bowling ally back in 2016 I started collecting sonic plushies in 2018 sonjc was my life through out elementary middle and high school I got my first sonic shirt in 2018 my class went to go see the first sonic movie later I got a ps3 and played generations later I'm planning to collect the figures and movie murch
i like the way you think, it's refreshing and understandable
14:59 you clearly have a lot in common with me
the duck is so cuuute i love your character
My very first exposure to "Sonic" was when I watched my older brother play the Game Gear versions of "Sonic 1" and "Sonic 2" in 1995. And I used to think that the Cheerios looked like the rings that Sonic collected, while being unaware of the Honey Nut Cheerios cross promotion that happened in America.
As for when I became an on and off again fan myself, it was when I wound up playing "Sonic Heroes" on the PS2 in 2004. Yes I am aware that the PlayStation 2 version was not the best version of that game. But I still enjoyed it back then even with some of the minor glitches. I have a video of me talking about my experience with the franchise on my channel if you're willing to look for it.
I always found it weird that Sonic X didn't get any reruns on cable over in the U.S. It didn't rerun on Cartoon Network, Nick, or Jetix. It was just strictly aired on 4Kids own blocks.
I still like the English dub even if it’s nowhere near perfect. Hearing the line “I’m Sonic the kidnapper” cracks me up every time!
I'm 20 and have loved this franchise for WELL over 10 years. I know that I'm starting to become a beginner oldhead in the franchise when I was at a local laundromat and started talking to a mother and her daughter. I brought up what Sonic games I used to play to when I was her daughter's age (10/11) and when I said Sonic the Hedgehog 4 was one of them... SHE HAD NO IDEA WHAT THAT WAS. Her experience was everything that happened in this decade! It kind of blew my mind honestly and helped me realize that there is now a generation that has NO idea what that game you was! She was a really talented artist too so she kind of reminds me of when I was her age except FAR more artistically gifted lol.
I became a fan of sonic in 1992 when I got my Sega Genesis I had already gotten a super Nintendo the Christmas before and I'll .be damned if I wasn't a lil spoiled because I was the only kid in my neighborhood who had both the super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. I remember playing sonix
i wasn't done yet but my pos phone wants me to be. I remember the first time I ever played Sonic was at k b toys on a display sega Genesis. I got to Dr robotnik and I wanted a Sega Genesis for Christmas. My grandpa surprised me with one thAt came with sonic one and Donald ducks quak shot and an extra controller. I miss my grandparents they was the glue that held my family together
Play sonic X Shadow generations
So... Who popularized rhat dumb fart sfx?
Sonic X was my childhood. It's right up there with Dexter's Lab, Ed, Ed, and Eddy, and the HiT era Thomas The Tank Engine (which I also grew up on). Sonic X is what introduced me to the Sonic franchise when I was very little. The same with the 2003 Ninja Turtles being my childhood introduction to the TMNT franchise too. Some will say that 4kids entertainment is what made Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh popular in the west but that was around the late 90s. In the mid 2000s however, that was when 4kids shifted into showing more of Sonic and Ninja Turtles stuff. That's where I came in for the first time. I was born in the year 2000 which means I am a pure gen z 2000s kid and I can only really define my childhood experiences from that decade alone. Seeing both this and the 90s retrospective, really makes me not wanting to underestimate older folks from the prior decade who probably were fortunate to have access to things I wasn't aware of from when I was younger. Cutting to the chase, I can now better understand people who were critical on 4kids' dubs or early 2000s anime dubs in general and they probably had a good reason to, because now I have just learned that the early internet already had downloading sites and I guess piracy sites where you can watch anime in their original format before being localized for western television. I always wondered for a long while how people were able to know of the original Japanese version in a time when the anime medium was just beginning to take off and older folks of that time were already beginning to 'clap back' of how different and sometimes inaccurate localization in these industries in the west would be handling these shows. I swear I use to think that all of this stuff of seeing the original versions in their native languages was just a new thing that came about in the 2010s but no, this has always been the case from long before the internet. I use to have my feelings hurt because of people saying that 4kids sucked when I was someone who grew up on those early 2000s dubs and it shaped my childhood being a kid born in the United States. I didn't felt the need that I had to learn a different culture whenever I saw an anime show. For certain shows I didn't felt that having to learn about Japanese or Asian culture was the whole point of something like Sonic X or Pokémon because those programs were always designed for an international audience. So in some way, I do still defend edits and dubs from that era. We do the same when Pixar or Disney has to change something in their movies that may seem culturally inappropriate when releasing a movie in another region. But alas, there were other things like studio Ghibli that I also watched as a kid and it was a lot better at depicting a foreign culture in their English dubs without me having to educate myself on what it is the Ghibli movies were trying to show me. I just feel that for certain anime, the main purpose of watching its dub is just to watch something in your native tongue without having to read subtitles all the time. It's more convenient that way as it can get annoying for certain people. But I do believe that what 4kids was doing was to really just make anime more accessible for younger audiences and to deliver these programs in a way that the younger audiences in the west can understand. Most of those shows I feel that by forcing kids to learn a different culture when they just want to be entertained isn't right, especially when the main purpose of the show doesn't even focus on those aspects entirely.
yeah sonic also changed my life as a kid. I’ve been a sonic fan since late 2000’s like I watched sonic tv shows, playing official sonic games, watching sonic fan animations on UA-cam, playing nostalgia sonic flash games and fan games and even emulating sonic 16bit games on my PC back in 2010’s. I actually never make fun of sonic not even once. Sonic did too much for me as a kid and I’m still glad people still cares about our fav blue rat even today. Sonic will always be my fav video game franchise of all time
