Shorty On The Fly
United States
Приєднався 22 тра 2020
I have been fortunate to have many fellow fly fishers share their knowledge and experience with me over the years. It seems that I am constantly learning new things every time I interact with a fellow wielder of the long rod. This is my chance to give back and provide what I have gleaned of the years in a series of short videos that I hope you will enjoy.
Rotary Tying Intro: Brodhead Old Timer Streamer
Today we will introduce some rotary tying techniques using a somewhat old school streamer pattern. I was gifted this pattern by an old timer on Brodhead Creek at least 20 years ago.

Woodchuck Parachute ("The Upchuck")
Переглядів 622Рік тому
An often overlooked material when it comes to fly tying is Woodchuck hair. The guard hairs work exceptionally well for tails and winging material while the underfur (although a bit tricky to work with) makes wonderful dubbing for bodies of the fly. Getting Consistent with a Bead Head Pheasant Tail
Переглядів 1,6 тис.Рік тому
This video is more about the method than the fly. We will use the ubiquitous Bead Head Pheasant Tail in order to learn some of the techniques I use to stay as consistent as I do in my fly tying. I hope that it will be helpful and informative for you.
Beginning Fly Tying Kit: Your Basic Equipment List

I see or hear the question "What do I need to get started tying flies?" quite often so I thought that i would be prepared the next time the question comes up. This is not going to be the cheapest set of suggestions, but it should give you a place to start. And don't just take my word for it, ask around and see what others think.
Lucifer Nymph: The Other "Prince" of Darkness for Halloween
Переглядів 415Рік тому
Another unusual wire bodied nymph. This time we DO discuss those pesky Biot tails and how to deal with them. But this is not just a novelty fly. I have caught fish on it. It is especially effective as the lead fly in a dropper rig.

Although it is a fun Halloween Theme title, this does catch fish and provides some guidance on how to achieve a nice wire bodied fly.

When I went to tie this pattern I realized that I did not have one of the particular materials called for in the original recipe so I substituted. Sometimes you had what you needed all along without even knowing it. There is also a short discussion on how I build a fly box at the end. Sulphur Emerger Smoke Jumper
Переглядів 922Рік тому
The Smoke Jumper pattern is traditionally tied using CDC puffs. In this instance, I am using Enrico Puglisi's Trigger Point fibers instead. They come in a wide variety of colors and can be used to imitate most any Mayfly.

Here is a simple Caddis Emerger pattern that can be tied in a variety of sizes and color combinations. Fish it on the surface or just below.

While similar to the Iso Hair Wing pattern we already learned, the addition of the underwing using Trigger Point fibers adds a floatability factor that can't be beat.

Great information, thanks.
You are my inspiration for tying flies, I have arthritis and can't fly fish anymore and almost quit tying flies until I ran across one of your videos and seen (briefly) on of your fly boxes. I was very impressed and now that is my goal to make one as organized and neat as yours
Soooooo helpful. Thank you.
The first time I watched this is though 800 flies was crazy and seam like it would take a lifetime to tie, but a few months ago I tied up 100 BH Caddis’s and realized that it actually isn’t very much once you get into it.
I’m new into tying flies, i have all the tools and some basic hackles and threads, im just wondering what a good kit or things that i will want later would be? Like what supplies are a must have, i have a small list but i would like to get lots of stuff at once instead of having individual buys
I certainly enjoy your instruction on properly tying a Royal Trude. I enjoy fishing them! Usually a lime or a black.
Very elegant tie!!! I am going to try these materials, these are the materials that i find available. thanks <>< J
Every body has a laughing-place, a laughing place to go-ho-ho. Find a frown turn it upside down and you'll find your's I Know Ho Ho.
Just found this after talking to you yesterday and today at the fly tying symposium. So nice to meet you. You are truly gifted and a testament to the industry!
Thanks so much. It was a great weekend!
Excellent video - this is invaluable advice for those new to the hobby
Nice Fly SHORTY! I hope all is well with You! Looking forward to seeing more of Your Tying Videos.
What are your favorite flys to carry in October
Your videos are awesome. Do more please!
Do you do a white .ridge pattern
Excellent video! Tks! I like to keep dries in the type of box you mentioned but with the wind many times is tricky.
Really helpful video!
The Umqua box...I've come to loath it. Dark colors so you can't see into the box. Tapered lid so you can't stack them. Difficult to place the flies.
Are we going to see some more content. Your videos are really great. I look forward to them
I too enjoy using EP fibers. Question: how do you determine how much to use for this pattern (or any pattern for that matter)?
It is just a feel thing. Kind of like selecting deer hair. Wish I had a better answer but it just takes some trial and error and practice to get what you want.
@@ShortyOnTheFly 1) what brand klinkhammer hook is that? 2) do you find poor durability using pheasant tail? Have you considered using a really thin wire or maybe EP fibers for the body?
@@westsidewil I use Saber hooks. I prefer using a material that will sink for the body. That way the EP fibers will suspend the whole thing like an emerging insect. Hope that helps.
@@ShortyOnTheFly I sort of suspected it. How durable is the PT?
@@westsidewil It holds up pretty well. You could always reinforce the PT with some fine copper wire.
beautiful selection and organization and great short film
❤ love it, thank you
I have done something similar and spent the last 7 years researching the best fly patterns from every source I can find! I have created several books where all the patterns are written down. I reviewed each and reduced the patterns down to the most essential which will catch Brown trout, sea run Brown trout, Brook trout, sea run Brook trout, Rainbow trout, Landlocked salmon and Atlantic salmon! These are the fresh water fish available where I live. Each pattern must be effective for many of these and some (a small number) will catch all or any! I am down to about 30 patterns at this point! I still have specific Atlantic Salmon patterns…the exception, at this point! It is a work in progress and may never be complete! I rarely fish dry flys as I found no need! Soft hackles, flymphs, wet flys, bucktails feather wing streamers and hair wing flys are what I use and on a good day can catch over 100 trout releasing most but keeping perhaps a 1/2 dozen for a meal! Trout are very abundant where I am and if anything overpopulated in many waters here so taking a few for the pan is not frowned upon and expected! If not done correctly, catch and release often kills the fish you caught, later and out of sight! I never touch any fish or remove it out of the water! I keep it in a soft mesh net and grip the hook with haemostats, a quick twist to free the hook and dip the net to let the fish swim away! Probably not perfect but as good as I can do! Tight lines, keep on tying! Best Regards!
Awesome comment my brother. We need to respect the fish, enjoy the battle, but get them back to their habitat as soon as we have met them. If I get them on and the release themselves, that is a win.
@@ShortyOnTheFly absolutely agree…..if you were curious where I am, it’s Newfoundland and Labrador! Small population, and vast numbers of rivers and lakes, way too many to count ?? Certainly more than any person could ever fish!! Keep on trucking!!
Caribou hair floats better than Deer, Elk or Moose(not good)! It is quite hollow! The only disadvantage is Caribou is more brittle so will not hold up as well as the others! However, for a spun deer hair trimmed body such as a bomber, it floats much better than the rest. I hunt and have taken Caribou, so it is readily available to me, as is SnowShoe hare! Thanks for your video and the info!
Absolutely amazing 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it. Peace.
Mate, great tie and mad skills shown, thanks for showing me this. Peace to you too.
I was checking back to see how your doing health wise. Love you videos
I am much better, thanks. More vids up soon.
Excellent video
thank you - I love this video - so useful!
Glad you enjoyed it.
Amazing video. Happy I found you channel
I am happy that you found me as well.
How's your health these day? I just got over Cancer and really enjoy your videos
I am glad to hear that you kicked cancer even more than that you enjoy the videos. I am in good shape. Order filling and show season are almost at an end so there will be more vids up in the not too distant future.
I want to see your March brown nymph .im looking for a good pattern. I just tied up some loren Williams and would like to know yours .just got done tying your hares ear a nd pt emergers
I remember when i started fly tying money was a real problem so i choose a fly i use a lot of (my go to fly) and bought those materials and every payday or anytime i had some money, i would go buy one or two pieces of fly tying material. This was a great way to stock up on materials without ever feeling like i was breaking the bank!! Now 48 years of fly tying later, i can fill a simi-trailer with my fly tying stuff!! Oh ya, i still need more materials! We will have enough, or ever be satisfied with the materials we have. Because someone somewhere created a fly pattern with materials we do not have!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I haven’t tried a fly in over 30 years. But I’m getting back into that pleasure again! Your video was a great reminder that being creative is far more fun, then sticking to the book. Bugs took out a good portion of my feather stock. So I almost have start over building my supplies up. There’s a lot of new stuff going now. Let the fun begin!
Glad you enjoyed the video!
What is the name of your vise? I need to upgrade my beginner one. Thank you
I use a Regal Revolution. It is a bit pricey but you will never have to buy another one.
Are there any tips to share on lighting and posture while tying? I love your videos keep whipping thread!
I have a standing lamp with 5 adjustable lights illuminating from behind me and a strong lamp right over my vise on my desk. When tying at shows I have a Peak light that attaches to the stem of my vise. It is expensive but worth it. Do not underestimate the importance of good lighting.
You don't need all this big money stuff. The first vice that he had will do the job. All the vice has got to do is hold the hook. You can make a lot of the tools.☺
Not sure what your point is here.
@@ShortyOnTheFlythe point is a beginner doesn't have to go bankrupt buying equipment. There are far more affordable complete kits available for someone just starting out.
This is the way!
Indeed it is
WOW Shorty! Outstanding!
Another great easy Tie SHORTY!
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
👍👍👍👍👍
Well Done! Thanks for Sharing and great Instruction.
Hey Shorty Tom Puzio here. It was Great To see You at The Edison Show this Morning. Your LOOP Method was Genius. Please post a video of it in the near future.
Sorry I missed this. The technique is demonstrated in my “Hedgehog” video. Hope that helps.
Amazing video! Like it a lot! Best greetings from Germany
I just got several Collins capes/saddles. Very nice. Really good price too for the cape and saddle. Unfortunately he is no longer raising chickens and is now just selling off the last of his stock. I'm going to order a bunch more just to have them. Kinda a pain to order though
Tying some this week! Peace
Awesome!
From obsession to disease!! Aaaaaaaand $30k later ... I am 1000% jealous. You could AIRBnB this space to men for about $300 an hour for 'mental therapy!' Just an idea. (I'll reserve January 2nd for the next 3 years, 10am to 1pm.) To get over the holiday madness. Thanks, Nick in Redfield Arkansas
Great idea! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Great video and fly Shorty thank's for sharing.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
Very cool looking streamer shorty. Thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great little breakdown. One thing that always bugged me no pun intended is in which direction to put the flies into the little slots. Occassionally i find out that i put them in upside down. Also with a bit larger flies especially egg patterns i tend to skip a slot in order to make room for the next egg fly. I have tried putting them in free roaming boxes but egg flies with a veil tend to get stuck together in the hooks. So you go to pull one out and 5 come out and you drop a few on the ground lol. I havent tried magnetic boxes yet?.. plano makes a new one i might try. Lastly i put all my streamers in bugger barns but they take up alot of space. I kinda wish the slots in those were a bit closer together. Gain one thing and lose another. Too flat of a box and it crushes certain flies... Any good box recommendations for holding a large amount of egg paterns and nymphs?... Thanks! Fish on!🐟🎣
Thank you for sharing. I am a beginner fly tying guy. But this looks possible. 👍
Sure it is! Let me now how it works out for you.
