    The right side is speaking to me and saying “Put your terrestrials (hoppers beetles ants and big floaty foam things) over here”. The right side of the swing leaf big attractors (wolfs and stimulators, etc) that won’t get their hackles crushed because of the depth. That leaves the two other panels for attractor nymphs for the hopper-dropper set ups.
    It’s a great box. Super versatile.

    Thanks Shorty, the boxes you showed are also available in the Cabela's White River brand. Maybe easier for some folk to find. I have some - good storage boxes for about $13 each.

    Another handy feature of these boxes is that the center leaf comes out. Makes more room or swap out flies with another box.

    I’m currently working through filling my third flybox of the same type or layout. Would be awesome if you started a lifecycle series of just the most common insects found in your local area. The first two boxes I built out were meant to be used if I wanted to travel, or if I was unsure of an area that I would be fishing. One was a nymph specific and the other a dry flies only type of deal, and isn’t it so fun trying to figure out where an emerger fits into that. I took the four food groups of my target species(trout), and then wrote down a list of the patterns I felt confident in or liked that fit into each food group that would be represented in its own page. So, the nymph specific box can be carried anywhere in the US and contains mayfly nymphs from East to west in page 1, the second page or leaf are midges, the third page was dedicated to Caddis, and the final page was dedicated to stoneflies due to size. My box currently holds almost 900 nymphs that I replenish through the season as it is used, if need be only, and then touched up and topped off during the colder months when I find myself in a smaller midge only box.
    My second box was done dry fly only, East to west, using the same concept and what I had learned while creating and filling the first nymph box. After that box had been filled I realized that I needed more space due to size of wings, and if I wanted to maintain them in a pleasing manner to at least my eye, I would need to remove the center leaf, which I did, and set page 1 or the left side as a Caddis only side and made the right mayfly only as I realized I rarely fished the midge dry or a stonefly dry patterns often enough to warrant a full page.
    Box three was set up as a Stillwater box for both trout or warmwater species like bass, Bren, and crappie, and honestly I find myself using increasingly more on local lakes deep into the season when trout get finicky and unhealthy when pressured in warmer water temps.
    So, here I sit filling my fourth box of this type, and while thinking of the possibilities I figured it would be fun to do a more targeted box for my local area that contained a mixture of common to me insects in their full lifecycle. I figured I would go from nymph, to pupa(if necessary), to emerger, to cripple, to dun, and then to spinner. I would accomplish this with one row dedicated to one insect, with three total flies tied per pattern, and patterns created by myself without any form of known or written recipes. My method is to pull up a photograph that depicts the desired species, use that photo to decide what features or characteristics to emphasize or draw attention to, and then utilize my own knowledge of materials that I’ve gained learning the art of fly tying to decide the best material option or method of tying to accomplish my goal. To be honest, this box has given me more pleasure than any of the ones that came before it. In this process I’ve done a much deeper dive on the documented species within my state, and I’ve spent more time collecting specimens as well to get a better idea of what mine specifically look like. Also, creating your own version of a pattern and the creative freedom that comes with that means you can go as crazy as you want, and that alone made this box worth doing.
    Hopefully you continue to have fun, continue to share with us, and hopefully we’re patient enough to read this book, my apologies.

    Sure do love the look of all those flies in the box. I've got a long way to go to get to that point. I've tied about 17 flies so far. Just started learning!

    You just put my boxes to shame 😂😂I think for that new one it would be fun to do a match hatching box where you have the life cycle of all/most of the bugs that hatch on your local river!?

    • @ShortyOnTheFly
      @ShortyOnTheFly  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks. I kind of did that with that first box I showed you. The dries and soft hackles are arranged according to hatch times. And the last box in the videos has a lot of local patterns in it.

    What about a Caddis lifecycle box. I’m really into caddis at the moment, as it’s about all our Bow River trout eat in the heat of summer with billions on the banks.

    Small box to fit shirt pocket. 18 trout flies for May & June. What would you select to give to someone new to the sport or even to take to the stream yourself for an hour of fishing. Area covered would be the Northeast.
    Thank you and keep up the good work. Homer
