  • I do not know any fly fishers who do not like to peek inside of others' boxes in order to see what they are using. Here is a peek inside of the one I recently filled. I hope you enjoy it.

    WOW! A lot of time and effort went into filling those boxes, thanks for showing Shorty.

    I learned something from you. Put your dry flies in compartment boxes. I like it thank you

    The dedication to make three boxes like that shows you practice what you preach, consistency in ever thread turn, thank you for sharing.

      Thank you for your input. I was doing a demonstration just yesterday and having the conversation about consistency. It is just a matter of discipline to force yourself to do the same thing every time. It does not have to be the same thing that I do, just do the same thing that feels comfortable to YOU in your approach.

      The difference between us, you’re a master and I’m on the steep learning curve. I try to be consistent but by the 6-8th fly it has changed, sometimes even for the better haha.

      @@robertmajor4904 I tell my students to look at each fly and try to improve just one thing in the next one. Strive for consistency, material placement, number of wraps you take for a rib, tail length, wing height, etc… If you are a beginner, each fly SHOULD get better than the last. Best of luck. Contact me through Shorty on the Fly on Facebook if you have any questions.

    Fantastic! You have a true talent. Love your videos. I’m a beginner fly fisherman who started with bass spin fishing as a young kid (like so many others). Have been learning fly now for a few years now in my 50s and love it. So much to learn.

    That is a lot of flies. Do you use tweezers to pack them so tightly? I don’t think I could place them or remove them in such a tight array. No dry flies or streamers? Or were those just your nymph boxes?

    • @ShortyOnTheFly
      @ShortyOnTheFly  2 роки тому

      I have boxes with streamers and there are dry flies in those boxes as they have one deep panel that will accommodate them. I put them both on display in previous videos.

  • @robinred1851
    @robinred1851 2 роки тому

    I guess these three boxes you showed at the end all together contain about 1800-2000 flies.
    When I go fishing I carry 1 (!) box with me and there I have about 150 flies. Dry flies, nymphs and streamers. Just 150.

    • @ShortyOnTheFly
      @ShortyOnTheFly  2 роки тому +1

      That is probably really all you need but I often give others a fly from time to time to help them out.

      Understand. And I think very nice of you. I would also appreciate it when known flytiers like you would spend me some flies. I wouldn't fish with them but would collect them like people collect stamps, and, would use them as examples to copy them.

      I am well and I will be back soon. That box is called a "waterproof swingleaf nymph fly box". I just kind of keep my eye out for them at shows and shops I visit.

  • @stevebest4867

    Wow! That is awesome…Thanks for sharing! You have set the bar for the up coming winter goals! Question, do you use tungsten or brass beads typically?

    • @ShortyOnTheFly
      @ShortyOnTheFly  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. Always tungsten. Even added lead wraps just don’t get them down in most of the water I fish. And I do add lead wraps to hold the bead in place and add extra weight. If you are not getting hung up from time to time, you are not deep enough. Peace.

    Thanks for showing us how you put a box together. Do you have any plans for a video on the Copper John shown in this video? What brand of fly boxes do you use?

    • @ShortyOnTheFly
      @ShortyOnTheFly  2 роки тому +1

      Those fly boxes are kind of scarce. I keep my eyes open and grab them when I see them at shows and so forth. I may do a Copper John but I like to keep my videos under ten minutes and it will be tough to do so for that fly. But I may rethink it and put that one up at some point.

    • @ShortyOnTheFly

      Actually those boxes have one extra deep panel that allows the dries to keep their shape. That is why I selected them. Thanks for the attention to detail.😊
