Ultra Running VLOG - Training for an Ultra Marathon
After 16x 100 miles ultra marathon completed in 2024, the racing season is now coming to an end. And we're now looking into the future - epic adventure for 2025!
But before that, it's time to heal, recover, and get back in shape! By running so many ultra marathon races - especially the past few months - I've had to neglect training. It was endless cycles of taper, race, recover, taper, race, recover.
This running vlog covers my first week back to training for ultra marathon. We go back to basics - setting up training goals, establishing a training plan, and executing! Finding the right balance of long run, speed work, strength session, and importantly, recovery!
And I have to say - I prefer racing. But... it felt amazing to have productive training again. Even better, Nora had her first on trail hike, and short job, since her injury! So happy and proud of those two weeks. And even better, the next 2 will likely be the same, up until 2025.
Speaking of ultra marathon racing in 2025, I'm working on my schedule. If you have suggestions, please let me know!

Grand Raid / Diagonale des Fous - The TOUGHEST 100 Miles Ultra Marathon in the World
Переглядів 6 тис.День тому
Grand raid / diagonale des fous is the toughest course for an 100 miles ultra marathon I've ever done. The course traverse the Reunion Island off the coast of Africa - with some breath taking mountains and jungles. With 35k ft of elevation gain and highly technical trails, this race is not for the faint of heart! With rain, mud, rocks, and pretty bad chafing and blisters...it's not my best perf...

22:51 dude in the back probably did not speak English but he definitely understood the "It's yummy" hahaha
Didn't the winner do it in under 60 hours?
The ending vs. Jeff Browning was shocking!
There's a full video for TOR coming? ❤ I have an injury right now and am out for a week or two and it feels like I'm loosing all my progress 😯
Come do the Hellbender 100 in North Carolina. If you ever wanted to see the best of the mountains out here this is the race for you! Many consider it the toughest one on the east coast. Bonus the buckle is really great. Thanks for the vid!
Thanks for another really good VLOG update. Glad that Nora is making strong progress. The structured plan definitely helps with personal accountability and I really like how you described the plan being what you aspire to vs. a mandate, leaving room to do more or less depending on what your body is telling you.
Simon, you’ve inspired me so much, I’m learning a lot by watching your videos, and just seeing your daily activity. The biggest thing I’ve learned by seeing your daily activity is that I always don’t have to go for 1,000,000 mile run, it’s OK to take small bites every day. What I’m taking from all this is as long as I stay consistent, I should be good. I still haven’t put too many miles in since Lake Hodges 50 K because I got a banged up ankle and I got a severe cold a couple weeks ago. Should be back hitting the trails Monday. I do feel your pain, not being able to enjoy some of those activities with Nora. My wife also injured her knee at her Zumba classes, but still decided to do the Carmel valley 10k on an injured knee, which made it worse. She seems to be recovering good, but I still feel she has about another month or so before she could hit the trails again. thanks Simon, keep up the good work, buddy.
Hope she recovers soon! Smart thing that you took it easy after Hodges - best to fully recover to prevent exactly this. It's hard to know sometimes however...
I love your videos ong they are always so informing and relaxing 😂🎉❤😅😊😮
Thanks :)
Bravo pour la Diag .
What are you using to display your belt buckles ? Where can i get some? Thanks Simon

Congrats! Yes that was a though edition too
Was it? I was actually wondering how it compared to other years. What made it different? Was it the rain?
compared to previous one, it was at least 10k more and a good 1000m additional elevation gain. That + the technical trails and slippery rocks…
Where do that many runners stay!? Awesome video, well done!
You mean during the week? I was surprised by how big the cities are around here. You certainly met a lot of runners just walking the street, but there were tons of places to stay.
@@runningwithsimonI figured given it’s a smallish island that accommodations would be difficult to find.
Takes a wise runner to know when to stop and save health to run another day
Yes for sure - and it's a hard balance to find in the heat of the moment. The biggest mistake I did was a silly training run (very long time ago). I was on my way to a PR for a 10k on treadmill, felt some very slight pain in my feet ~7-8km in. But decided to keep pushing. I guess adrenaline kept me going. As soon as I stopped running, the pain was terrible, and I could hardly walk to the locker room. Took me 3 months to be back to running...
Come to the beast coast for Massanutten 100! Great video, looking forward to the TDG doc, that is also my dream race
In May? I'm thinking Beast Coast - but thinking Cruel Jewel 100 in GA (I did the 50 in '23).
@@runningwithsimon yeah May 17th, it will be my first 100, so yeah, same weekend as Cruel Jewel
What is the reason they have everyone wear the same shirt?
You sir, are a very astute observer! Fun fact - I didn't know that, so I went to the bus for the start wearing my normal stuff (that's why at 3:52 I'm still wearing my normal shirt). I noticed everyone with the same shirt then asked and learned I had to have it. I had to sprint to my room (1 miles x 2 ? ) to get it and still make it on time for the bus... And why? That's a very good question. ... I honestly don't know. Pictures at the start? ... I don't know. That's the only reason I can think of, but it's also not a great reason. But then on course, a lot of people weren't wearing it anymore.
It’s simple: I see Simon video, I click. Moab 240 feels like a natural choice for next year! Might be interesting to see you do a backyard style last man standing type of race if that calls to you? Otherwise we’re all just enjoying being brought along for the ride ✌🏻
It does feel like a natural choice indeed. I've been thinking about Triple Crown but obviously I missed the window. ... Maybe if I ask nicely?
Any interest in any UK races?
That's why I usually end up holding my headlamp in my hand!
Mt taylor fall race in new mexico
September? Rough time - so many race..! But NM would be great. I've never been so I need to find a reason to head there :)
Great news she is doing better. Hellbender 100 in NC views are great 👍 so I heard.
Thanks :) It's in may? You know, I've been thinking of either Cocodona repeat. And/or Cruel Jewel 100 which I did the 50, so now I need the real deal!
Thanks!
Thanks Linda :)
Great video! Yaaay Nora!! I'm so glad she's getting back to normal! I'm looking forward to the upcoming videos, I hope I can catch the live premiere! And I think you should do the Jigger Johnson in NH... it's in contention for the toughest 100 miler in the US, with 29,000 feet of gain on very technical New England trails. I'll be volunteering again, as long as they don't hold it on the same weekend as the VT 100 again!
For some reason, I thought it was 40k ft! But yes I've def heard about it :)
What a beautiful video showcasing such a nice place/race
Thanks - felt good to show my 'home trails' to folks!
I’d love to get your perspective on Kodiak UTMB in Big Bear CA!
Ah! It's on my list - close to home and I had heard good stuff from before. I'll probably do it if I don't do Moab 240
@@runningwithsimon skip Moab, I put my vote for Kodiak....of course I live in CA and have zero interest in running a 240 distance as I need sleep 😂
It felt so good to be back to training, and even better to be on trails with Nora! ps: aiming to release Javelina 100 miles movie this weekend! More details on Instagram when I'll know the exact time!
Amazing adventure! Congrats!
Thanks! Yes exactly - to limit damage to the trails. They would have been VERY helpful - but if it truly helps maintain the trails, I'm ok with that.
Yet another great film and probably the best I’ve seen from you,I think you managed to capture the darker side of running and you show that even people at your level suffer and you show how to try and cope with it,thanks for sharing and showing the real side of trail running as I prepare for my first 100 next year.😃👍👍
Thanks :) I'm happy with this one too - ultras (and life) is not always rainbow in butterflies. It's hard to capture this on films however... Happy training and good luck for your 100!
That's really helpful Simon. I'm planning to enter my 3rd 100k. The last one was about 10 years ago and the longest I've run since then has been about 40k. I've just completed a half but want to step up to another 100k next year. I think I may have overtrained the last time I entered an ultra. I finished but it was tough. Your advice and training plan seems like just what I need. Thanks so much
It's a tough balance to find for sure. Good luck!
Depends on your height I suppose 😆
haha lol I guess!
Great video! I'm making a short documentary on the race, do you mind if I include a couple short clips from your video in it?
Sure - if you could put my handle @RunningWithSimon that'd be appreciated. Which race? Diagonale or Javelina? Diagonale the full movie is out so you'll have better clips there. Javelina is coming up soon(ish) probably by the end of the weekend, so same thing - might have better clip in there.
I'm still a newbie, only a mile or two at a time. But the time out on trail is a balm for my soul and mental health.
We all start somewhere. Plus, no distance is too small - as long as it makes you feel good! :)
I have autism I done 100 km at 7hours and 54 minutes my friend said that was slow he never ran 100 km in he's life so he shouldn't judge your expert at utra running so is my time slow be honest with me
Congratulation! It's extremely fast. I don't think I know anyone (except the pros I know) that could run this. I certainly can't. My fastest was ~10hr (as part of 100 miles)
I’m exhausted just watching this Simon! Well done.
Zone 2 watching?
How do I run on the first setting on my petzl for 30+ hours vs only 2+ hours on the better setting - I love seeing everything and haven't been able to find flags during night segments because of my headlamp being too weak 😂
Most light won't last the full night if you put them at max setting. Maybe a kogalla - which is super bright - using the biggest battery pack. That said, it's very bulky. And if your issue is to find flag, headlamp is better because with a waist lamp you don't get the reflection of the trail marker.
@runningwithsimon thank you for the tips, I definitely have to train more at night and get used to not seeing everything 🥲
I’ve been putting my headlight on the forks of my bike for years for this very reason!
Yes, for seeing much better with light in the hand, just also nice to have hands free for using poles, drinking and eating. With light in hand also I can sweep the light around without moving my head. I have not the experience you do obviously just interested you prefer in hand.
I'll vary based on context. If I need both hands at all time (e.g., poles), I'll use a waist + head. I might also be more used to holding something since I often carry the camera - so a light doesn't seem so cumbersome.
@runningwithsimon Thanks for the tip!
I still think it is better to run with a headlamp since the waistlamp cast long moving shadows that will make your steps even more uncertain…my opinion only 😉
You can also use both to reduce how distracting the shadows are. I personally like seeing the shadow as it gives back perspective - but obviously to each their own. I think worth trying both, and deciding what feels better for yourself.
Congratulations!! I went through exactly through the same at my diagonale de fous this year !! Thank you for that video I felt reflected on everything!! Hot, cold, soreness, blisters and the horrible chafing. And same blisters on the “chemin del anglais” wasn’t super fun 😅 and the chafing trying to put napkins 😅!!
haha I guess I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one!
Hope you enjoyed the Prodigio shoes. I really liked running in them and would consider a 100 miler in them too. What a crazy race with so many people! Beautiful scenery and an amazing opportunity for you to run this. Congrats on your finish too!!!
Thanks! I just need to get +0.5 size, and change my socks. Blisters were unavoidable having soaking wet feet for 50 hours
Great video
Thanks! Are you racing it this year?
SO cool to see the course! Super technical! I'd love to race it one of these years. Thanks for sharing the adventure, Simon. Crazy how many dudes there are. LOL
And I want to see you race this!!! Feels like Fuji and HURT had a baby - I feel it's right up your alley!
So much of this race looked miserable, I don't enjoy the huge crowds and the HUGE WAIT for the toilets. Thanks again for an excellent video of the race and your experience.
Thanks! You are spot on...! It was a bit of a let down for exactly this reason - maybe if I had expected it, I wouldn't have been so disappointed. Because otherwise, it was easy to see how this race grew so much.
“It’s gorgeous!” Yes indeed. Welcome to Prescott. I love living here.
Thanks :)
Hey Simon, just a quick question: What was the cost of inscribing for this one? That info is not available now since it just happened, I believe. I'm from Costa Rica, so I would like to plan ahead and maybe take the trip next year. Loved the small race vibe and the beautiful trails, that is definitely for me! Ps. I already checked the manual on their site, it's just that the pricing is not there.
The registration was $300. With ultrasignup fees and tax it was about $350. Not sure if he is or isn't planning to increase price next year
@@runningwithsimon Nicee! Will definitely consider it. Have a good one.
Sympa de t’entendre parler français 👍🏻🖖 bravo encore pour cette course !!!
Merci!
Watching you is a huge motivation! I signed up for my first ultra next year. A 46 mile here in Florida. I have a long way to go on training, but your videos are an inspiration and a huge help! Thank you Simon!
Good luck :) I'm actually considering coming over to FL for a race next year but still need to confirm a few things first
I did my first this year (53mi in CO). Find a good training plan, stick to it, and set realistic goals and you'll do great. Most importantly, though, have fun!
I could see with all of you the mental fatigue of this race. Def kept the mantra of just keeping moving. Great job!!!
Yup it was a grind. Blisters and chafing can get really painful, but you at least know it's not an injury. Still, I could easily tell looking around that I was suffering more than average and it was slowly me down a ton. At some point I really just wanted to be done - especially going down to Grand Chaloupe at ~170-180km.
Impressive and inspiring video. Not a single runner is using poles. Is it forbidden, considering the number of racers 😮
Thanks - and yes exactly. Poles were forbidden because of the impact on trails (I was told even tourists on the island are encouraged NOT to use poles, but it's mostly disregarded). They would have been super useful
There is a good video cause I’ve been helping a friend train who wants to do his first hundred this year his longest run so far was 50 but the one he picked was one with 20,000 feet again which probably ain’t a problem because it’s gonna force him to walk a little bit more and you do get 34 hours. I was trying to convince some maybe doing the hundred K first but he doesn’t want to so I just texted him. I said now you also need to get an a hotel night for the night before the race and one after the race And he didn’t like that idea he said no I’m gonna drive home so I’ll keep you posted. what happens I think he thinks he’s gonna be Postres suffering but equal to his 50 and you know I found out it’s different but he could do good you never know unless you’ll listen to me and let’s do it 100 K for the next year to 100 mile, but we’ll see
20k for 50 miles - dang that's a lot!
@ no that was a voice text. I think it was 20,000 for 100 miles.. I thought he would be better doing the 100k at 12.,500 but he wants the whole thing. But the hardest part is a it’s in the East Coast with all the leafs if it’s dark also a race will be in the dark. It’s a 25 mile loop so he’s gonna have to run by his car four times. Dec 14 we will see Thanks for the reply. I was wondering to play in your video or we scare him cause East Coast hundred miles are no joke. Any hundred miles is no joke
Me & my friend who are doing some 200s next year both bought this watch because of your review; I'm loving it so far!
Awesome :) Good luck out there! ps: and I don't remember if it was clear in this - but I highly suggest doing GPS only to squeeze the most juice out of the battery. It's plenty accurate for a 200 miler
That went from a congested nightmare to a technical nightmare. Not sure many people could have pushed on with shorts ripping and blisters like that... awesome work thanks for sharing.
Thanks :)
