  • Curious about how to train and run an ultra marathon? Welcome to my ultra running training VLOG - Episode 8. This series shows what it takes to run ultra marathon, providing you honest and uncensored details as I train and race for 100 miles ultra marathon every month for the third year. This is a 'behind the scene' view showing the imperfection but the reality of ultra running. This episode covers 2 weeks, including recovery from Quebec Mega Trail 100 miles, taper, and my latest ultra marathon - Tahoe Rim Trail 100 miles. We also did some trail running in King's Canyon National Park and Yosemite National Park!

    That's it - it's summer racing. And my calendar is packed with races every 2 weeks. I got so excited about so many races that I overdid it a little.... So the cycles are short for training. The focus is on active recovery and tapering. Doing my best to come in healthy and uninjured. Almost anything else is secondary.
    So tried cycling a lot. But also brining back some slow run very early. That turned out to be a mistake - I slightly aggravated tendinitis in my Achilles, which was an issue for Tahoe rim Trail. You live, you learn...
    Next race is Angeles Crest 100 miles in California on August 3-4. Then Leadville 100 miles in Colorado, self-supported Tour du Mont-Blanc in Italy and Tor des Geants - 200 miles in the Italian Alps.
    As always - Thanks for watching and remember -
    Work Hard!
    Believe in yourself!
    Push your limits!

    I'm aiming for Friday Aug 2nd for Tahoe Rim Trial movie. I don't think I can before then, and I really want to take my time on this one! But I might drop a tip video in between...stay tuned!

    Hey, when you open your video, you said you hope you inspire us to have our own adventures. I completed my birthday ultra three weeks ago (38 miles, one per year). It was a successful run, although I finished at a much slower time than I originally anticipated. Only real injury to speak of is some tendinitis or bursitis in my elbow (didn’t train my upper body enough). Thanks so much again for sharing your insight and experience and for being such an open source of info for anyone trying to get into the ultra marathon world! Your videos provided the guidance and inspiration for sure!

      Amazing, congratulations!! I should do that too from now on - it's a cool tradition :)
      Hope the inflammation will die done soon enough. I don't know if you've seen my cocodona video, but my elbow took quite some time. It's technically still not 100% normal but mostly gone by now - by that took a couple of month :/

    Friend & I just hiked 76mi/13K ascent over 3 days around Tahoe. TRT is an awesome trail! 90 degree days! Thx for your channel. Learning so much!

    Simon you are a wild man. You really looked like you needed a break and to let the e body heal. Maybe let the mind heal up as well. Looked run down and ragged, idk how you do that and keep up with some work. The stress build up is insane.
    I'm new to watching your videos, but I'm really liking them. I say all that above to say, you are a savage. I'm a back country elk hunter. I go deep in the woods with a 60 pound pack and hunt elk and deer. I love it. An average day for me is 8-12 miles with a 30 pound pack. Usually 5-9 days then heavy loads 80-100 pounds to pack the animal out to the truck.
    Iv started studying you crazy 100 mile endurance savages to learn some endurance tips and tricks.
    Keep it up.

      Mind is fine - I certainly had a down for bighorn but vacation helped. Work is intense but runnign is my escape from it. If I could, slowing down work would be the real solution.
      Body - yup after my tor des geants, I'm having a little more time which will def help. And I'm taking recovery more seriously on this cycle!

    good, good thats there a longer TRT video coming. Thanks for night tips. Keep up the content Simon! I know you have a family, full time work, 5 kids, caring for a elderly parent, yada, yada, yada. Who's more important than your trail running community?

    I’m taking a guy out this year on his first hundred I’ve only done one other one. It’s mostly it’s like 350 K plus another 6 miles or so only about 8000 feet a game not really too technical. I think it’s a perfect grace form. he’s about a quarter to a3 away through his training plan right now and doubt is sitting in, 100 miles every month or you can do one with 24 weeks of training he said OK appreciate you. Your videos are great inspiration for all.

      Some times I feel 100 miler with less gain are very treacherous too. Usually tigther cutoff, and it's easy to pace too fast - basically running until it's too late (vs. hilly course where you are foreced to walk the hills and save yourself)
      Good luck to both of you!

    We lodged in Northstar area so hiked out from that area each day for 30mi, 30mi, 16mi day we left. We have Tahoe trail event in Oct and wanted to practice some of trails. All over TRT, Martis area, Sawtooth… ❤your channel. Helpful fueling advice and mindset advice esp. Was fun seeing all the horses competing in Tevis cup & learning that was start of Western States Endurance Run. Beautiful area..was HOT!😂 Wish we’d seen you both!

      Very cool! I need to come back - I hadn't been to Tahoe before and was somewhat dismissive of it for whatever reason. But it was absolutely gorgeous and would love to do the full TRT someday or like tahoe 200 (when it goes back to looping around)
      And yeah...it was so hot the day we finished! We were walking down on the other side, middle of the day, exposed... It got around 105F I think...

      We had so much fun in the sierra nevada. It was a bummer that we could only spend 1 day in Kings and 1 day in Yosemite. But so happy it was on our way...really makes the whole car trip much more enjoyable :)

    Hey Simon, I have a question which I can't find on the internet: How do you survive a multi day event? I gonna take part in a 7-day trail race. But I don't know what the best way is to recover every day. Maybe an idea to make a video on how to prep and RACE a multi-day trail? (How to recover, what to eat in the evening, in the morning, ...)

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  Місяць тому

      Do you mean like a stage race where you have run every day, and can rest at night? Or more like cocodona where you have distance that will take you 4-7 days and you need to manage your time? I haven't done stage race, but for longer distance - a lot of it was about making sure to stay on top of nutrition, staying mobile, and sleeping as much as needed otherwise you'll pay later

    • @didiervanrompaey
      @didiervanrompaey Місяць тому +1

      @@runningwithsimon A race where you can rest every night. Race is 'Pyrenees Stage Run". I know the typical stuff like cold shower, recovery shake, protein, refuel carbs, maybe compression socks, massage, eat enough during race, hydratation, electrolytes, ... But maybe you know some secrets, things I don't know. Recovery boots, foam rolling, ketones, supplements, pacing plan, heat training, altitude training,... ?

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  Місяць тому +1

      @@didiervanrompaey Unfortunately I haven't done any of those so can't really help here other than I suppose making sure to eat and sleep plenty since you have the time for that. I don't foam, I don't use recovery boots, I don't use ketone.
