Raw Edible Musk Thistle. Foraging wild food.
Carduus nutans, Musk thistle's tender young plants(fresh from dormancy in the spring) are edible from the center. They don't look it, but you can eat them. The spines are more soft than they look. Bitter is often an acquired taste, but is at the heart of foraging wild plants. Especially leafy greens. And will cleanse your liver, digestive system, act as a general tonic for the body, and a source of nutrition. And raw fresh plants are full of life force.

Original composition. The mode runs (intervals) like this. T- 3/4-3/4- flat 3rd- 4th- 5th - 6th - 3/4 - 3/4 -T The fractions in the intervals are approximate and not representative of any particular region. I don't know what category this pattern falls into. There is a run of 4 microtonal intervals staring at the 6th. And a chromatic run of whole steps starting at the minor third to the 6th (4 ...
Bowed Lyre, Mixolydian
Переглядів 7132 роки тому
Mixolydian is common in Bluegrass music, but this has some ornaments from the other side of the globe. Besides that, I believe this still runs consistent with mixolydian, to say nothing of my pitch errors. This came out of tying to play Bhimpalasi. Which is a very beautiful Raag. Frank Zappa also applied mixolydian in a lot of his guitar solos. Can you hear all 3?
Pentatonic, with 3rd modulation. Joyful
Переглядів 2202 роки тому
Orange sunset, This comes from concepts from Raag Jog. Which is easy to play melodically in general, and has the major 3rd on the ascending, and minor 3rd on descending... or approximately that. Its fun. Very pentatonic. Mode starts at the drone you hear throughout the tune. As a bowed lyre tune, this has the 1st part played on the high string, and the 2nd part on the lower string. A good pract...
Simple DIY Bow for your instrument. and a song

This is how I make my bows. I can adjust them and I always leave them loose when I'm not playing. I can change the hair when I need to also. I'm always looking to improve my material so I use what I can find around here. But something more rigid would suit me better. It's best to find some thing that dries hard and With very little spring if possible. Always clean your hands with alcohol to rem...
Mountain dulcimer, Romanian
Переглядів 4912 роки тому
This tune came out of a Romanian shepherd pipe tune that I wanted to learn play. Its a great melody but It was entirely too fast and this was the best I could do. This is a Bill Berg Dulcimer, it has a scalloped fingerboard which makes it nice to play. The notes come easier and you can slide around more across the board. I have been playing for years and when I found this I was impressed. Sturd...
Jouhikko solo, Moon in Capricorn

Something Ive been working on. Tuned 7(low), 1, 4. Low to high. I've been trying to find a tuning that I can play some Caucasus dance tunes in. I think something like this tuning works for it. This music is my own. I think its Aeolian minor scale on the middle string. But plays with the leading tone(m7) in the background. The high string is a 4th. Which I am still getting used to. I finished mak...
Redwood Bowed Lyre, Aeolian Dominant
Переглядів 4862 роки тому
A built this from Redwood that I acquired from a demolition project. I knew it would make a good sound. Sorry for the feedback in the audio. This is a cheap lapel mic and I'm still learning how to use it. Turning the volume up seems to bring more qualities to the recording. Tune inspired by Charukesi raga, also known as Aeolian Dominant. This song was complete on new years day. Starts at 1:48...
sharpened 4th play
Переглядів 2033 роки тому
I love the sharpened 4th. Raag multani has this and the flat 2nd. In Vlach/aromanian music they use a similar mode but with the natural 2nd. Some of the sliding here is from the hindustani style. But Hungarian music is where I first found the sharpened 4th so available. It has this straining intensity that some people hate. I find it thrilling. Thanks for sharing the strange musical journey wit...
composition in harmonic minor
Переглядів 2943 роки тому
Harmonic minor often used for sadness. I began playing it as raag kirwani because its for late evening time, and kind of inteospective. But it no longer fits that description. Besides, I’ve met the raga police on UA-cam. They are not helpful for learning raga. I just put the new high string on today. It keeps stretching. I’m trying the lighter (in this case finer) hair for this string to see if...

just how it came to me. Part of my intention was to play a modulation between two patterns. For the melody to shift feeling, but elegantly.
horsehair string replacement on a bowed lyre

To twist or not to twist. It’s a matter of taste. You will get greater tension this way, and I have found this to be kinder on the student for learning intonation and such. Don’t be afraid to break strings. Every time you put on a new string you will become more familiar with your instrument and exactly what it requires for optimal sound. Tension will effect both the voice at a basic level and...
