David Coverdale's voice is obviously pretty shot in this performance. Probably due to a heavy tour schedule and over-doing it every night. Even so, he is giving it his all, and he remains my favorite male vocalist of all time. What a voice that man has!

Sioux City's best ever musician putting his unique stamp on this song.
Ritchie wrote it, but Tommy plays it with more intent.
He was quite brilliant, and he painted from a broad pallette, this music being in complete contrast to his solo work and for Cobham and Mouzon.
Google: Tommy Bolin and Jim Fox interviewed by Bob Harris on Whistle Test.
It's a TV interview from 1973, Tommy had just joined The James Gang.
If you're a Tommy fan you'll like it.

A great comment! I know many of my fellow musicians would subscribe to it! Tommy Bolin really contributed to world's music, and that I can not say about many of even highly acclaimed and titled masters of guitar. The grim fact is that the heroin abuse, from which many of the musicians suffered and still suffer, killed him. Some of us were more lucky, but I understand that the Purple period, all that success which suddenly fell upon his head, did a bad job to him, and he is not to blame 4 that...

Blackmore has only good words to tell about Tommy Bolin. Rainbow also dedicated a song to Tommy when they got the news of his death...
Blackmore also spoke good about Steve Morse.
I haven' t heard his opinion about Simon McBride (yet) though....

  • @ericodijk
    @ericodijk 3 роки тому +6

This to me is the best version of Stormbringer by far. Tommy s rhythm guitar mixes a LOT of Purple Haze into the song. His solo is technically sound and really telling a story in its own right. Lots heavier than the Mk3 version. And that does not mean Blackmore did not do this song great, he adds a wonderful solo, of course. But Tommy really added a world to it.
If you ever wondered if Tommy was a good fit, THIS IS IT.
Even with all that happened, I think those 9 months with Bolin were way more adventurous and exciting than everything with Morse. (and he is good!!)

Mine too, buddy! Although I like what the Mark 2 did, but my soul reacts to the vibrations of Hughes, Bolin and Coverdale most. And for all my life I have great love and pity for the extra-talented boy, Tommy, and a lot of appreciation for Hughes' talent, especially his late Russia and Ukraine tours, he played fucking hot as hell in the 90-es - 2000-es. Years pass, but his voice still kicks ass, while, unfortunately, Gillan is fading away, and new DP is not so rocking as Hughes himself these days

  • @fetteshice

I was at the Long Beach show. I thought Tommy fit in rather well. In fact I wasn't even aware that T.B. was filling in for Blackmore until the downbeat. It wasn't a disappointment at all as I was already familiar with T.B. As for Blackmore being better than Hendrix, sheezz,I guess we're all entitled to our opinion, and music being as subjective as it is, that's a pretty tall statement. But, better than Hendrix??? Nobody was/is/never will be(maybe)as INNOVATIVE as Hendrix, THAT makes him best.

A comment to all: Tommy Bolin was an excellent successor to Blackmore because he was a very different player. Quite frankly no one on earth could replace Blackmore who, in my mind, is the greatest rock guitarist of all time. I think he's better than Hendrix. But to get back top Bolin, if you cant top what you had, change it around a bit. Listen to the Stormbringer album then Come Taste the Band. If you had no idea who the guitarists were they follow each other very well! Purple rules!

Where did you get all this footage? There is almost no footage of mark 4 and there is footage shown here that I’ve never seen! Great video nonetheless.

I got this footage from a semi-official DVD release. At the time they did not know the origin of the footage and no original audio was available. For some reason they dubbed in audio from the album, featuring Ritchie Blackmore on guitar.
I felt that was disrespectful to both Bolin and Blackmore, so I edited out the Blackmore era audio, and I dubbed in audio from a different Deep Purple mk4 concert to make the footage more authentic.
There is another clip from this show up on UA-cam:

Thanks for watching. Check out this channel, JohnnyVisionquest for more Tommy Bolin and
      DeepPurpleos for all things Purple.

Marta Nowak if i want to hear some "anhilating" stuff i maybe prefer Jeff Waters ;-) ... but if i wanna hear some funky and swinging rock music i love Bolin most ... and for sure if i´m looking for classic hard rock Richie is one of my favorites

Where did you find the Maryland footage?

It was on a semi-official DVD release which had Blackmore era audio dubbed over the Bolin era live video.
I felt that was disrespectful to both Blackmore and Bolin , so with the permission of Purpleos official Deep Purple UA-cam channel, I changed the audio to live Bolin era audio from the Long Beach concert. Purpleos advised me that 30 minutes of footage exists, and they have some of it posted on their channel, with
      (lo-fi) original audi.

I definitly agree with that. On the topic of playing electric guitar James Jimi Hendrix was The Innovator No 1. Of course there are many who has developed the way of playing electric guitar with all that comes along with the gear of sound and effects. But Jimi was one of a kind and there hasn't been no one coming close. Listen to Machine Gun from Band of Gypsys at Filmore and you'll understand why, if you don't, then I feel sorry for all of you...

I'm old enough to remember this and as it played out. If Tommy Bolin ever did have the talent to be a credible replacement for Blackmore it showed itself in the studio only. Drugs didn't just kill the man......they stole his ability to play. His live performances are mostly dreadful. This video shows glimpses into what he may have been had he been "clean" but this certainly is no replacement for one of the best Rock Guitarists ever.

I never understood why Hughes and Coverdale seemed to suck so bad singing together onstage and why Glenn always sounded as if he couldn't hear onstage. The guys are great singers and in studio they sound great together. I never saw them live unfortunately, saw Hughes/Thrall in Hollywood in the late 70's once, opened for Eddie Money, stole the show.
