Sharing my garden and everything I've learned from it with the hope that it will inspire you to get your hands dirty. Here you'll find the ups and downs of gardening in a zone 5b, Chicago-area climate. From a different zone? No worries. The ideas and practices are pretty universal. While no longer active, I rely on my master gardener training to create and maintain a healthy garden. Let's grow together!
Estimating a Bulk Order of Mulch WITHOUT a Tape Measure | Here She Grows
For a new garden, mulching is a necessity. It suppress weeds, cools the soil and prevents water evaporation. But after the first year, the garden is on it's own and won't see another two- to three-inch layer of mulch for the rest of it's life. Without mulch, weeds win every time. Once weed seeds see sunlight, it's go time and they'll outcompete any perennial.
So it's mulch time for my new sideyard garden which means I need to order in bulk, not bags. I need about seven yards of mulch and arrived at that estimate without a tape measure. I have one, err had one, but broke it as I was taking my first measurements for the sideyard garden.
No worries! You can walk it off and arrive at a fairly close estimate. Let me show you how!
Hi there! My name is Heather and I garden in zone 5B, recently changed to 6a, in the southwest suburbs of Chicago on a small residential lot. My garden lives a whole lot larger than it is and I love sharing tips and tricks, as well as plenty of mistakes, with others who love to play in the dirt.

Aruncus: A Pollinator-Friendly Perennial for Dry Shade
Переглядів 34814 днів тому
Gardening in dry shade is challenging! Which is why I wholeheartedly vouch for Aruncus, or goatsbeard, and its ability to shrug off drought, attract pollinators and make the most of a very dry situation in my garden. That's exactly what it's done for four years and counting in my dry shade garden! And with no drip irrigation! That's really saying something. Its foliage looks incredibly similar ...
Planting Hollywood Hibiscus in Self-Watering Containers | Here She Grows

After experimenting with my Aquapots Lite containers, I'm happy to say that they had a successful first season in the garden. So I brought them back for another go this year and am planting them with a simple but beautiful combo. Hollywood Hibiscus America's Sweetheart with a bit of Creeping Jenny from my garden. I also reuse my soil and show how to do that too. You won't find any specific meas...
The Most Fragrant Perennials in My Garden Right Now | Here She Grows

Fragrant perennials create a delightful sensory experience in your garden. In this video, I share five of the most fragrant flowers blooming in my garden right now. And the cool part, these plants get better every year. They're perennial! Hi there! My name is Heather and I garden in zone 5B, recently changed to 6a, in the southwest suburbs of Chicago on a small residential lot. My garden lives ...
Planting Leeks & Potatoes in Raised Beds and Grow Bags | Here She Grows
Переглядів 263Місяць тому
When it comes to planting in raised beds and grow bags, you can fudge quite a bit on plant spacing. With such limited space, who has the luxury of two-foot row spacing? Those spacing recommendations on seed packets are meant for in-ground growing. Let me show you how I plant American Flag leeks I grew from seed in my raised bed. Their location in the garden will benefit the berry bushes they're...
Rose Canker, Chlorosis & Thrips on my David Austins | Here She Grows
Переглядів 1,1 тис.2 місяці тому
My David Austin Roses are being put to the test by gardener error, high soil pH and hungry insects. From rose canker and chlorosis this spring, to thrips and caterpillars last year, maybe I'm not meant to grow roses. Let me show you what these three common rose issues look like and how I address each with vigilance and organic methods. Also, here are links to the rose gloves and soil soil testi...
Spring Garden Tour Time! | Here She Grows
Переглядів 1,3 тис.2 місяці тому
I don't know why it's taken me so long to give a full tour of my suburban Chicago garden! But now that I've done it, expect monthly updates. I've been gardening in this space since 2004 and it was a challenge turning nothing but grass and compacted Earth into a space that brings people and pollinators so much joy. There have been plenty of failures, plants that have come and gone and the list i...

Unboxing An Incredibly Tall Evergreen Made for Small Spaces | Here She Grows
Love the variety of plants! Everything looks wonderful 😊
Love your vids. The music is somewhat distracting.. hearing you..nature...is best. No need for singing or loud music.
😂
Looks fantastic!!! Nice project done and what a difference it makes.
Great video subject and info
Hi Heather! You would look good in a gunny sack and a mop on your head. Just sweet, cute and kind in every way! Mulch certainty does make the garden Pop! I love it myself. So kept, showcasing and beautifying! 💚💜🤎 You are Full-fledged there, garden girl. 🙌 Looks fabulous!! Yes, I dont "dig" the humidity myself 🥵 Love your Saint Francis ❤️
Enchanting!
Thanks for sharing your tips! We’re excited to add our hardy banana to the backyard. Hopefully ours performs as well as yours does 🤞
It's great, my friend (new subscriber)
Hydrangea envy is real. I appreciate all of the hard work that has gone into creating this magical place.
How did you get away without installing a water pressure regulator valve? Even with the pressure regulator valve my hose sprayed tiny streams into the air. I had to turn my splitter part way off to get the hose to just drip. Any thoughts on this issue? Thanks, and have a good day.
Loved the garden. I wish you would of filmed it a bit slower, it made me a little dizzy at that speed.
New here! And love it! Thanks for sharing 👍
I find it difficult to avoid a leaky connection between the plastic hose & the soaker hose. What connections are used here?
I have a lot of wet shady areas so astillbe thrives but might want to dry aruncus in a dry shade area.
Definitely worth a go imo!
I can’t keep astilbe alive either, super dry shade under spruce trees. Will look for the aruncus, thanks for the video.
I gave up on astilbe too. Would love to know how Aruncus does for you.
looks just like astillbe. What is the tree behind you at the beginning ?
It’s an Ivory Silk tree lilac, multi-stem
How are the flies on the blooms? I have Sorbaria Sem and it’s similar blooms are terrible for attracting all kinds of flies, not just the solitary bees or butterflies.
I’ve never noticed any flies around it and I’ve had it for several years. That’s interesting about the Sorbaria. I planted Mr. Mustard last year and it will flower for the first time this year. Curious to see who shows up. Thanks for the info!
You look cute! 👍 on hat. Astilbe grows without any attention in my landscaping areas. They do grow large.
I underestimated just how big it would get.
Beautiful 😃
I did that to my Charles Grimaldi this spring. I think I was too timid and now I can see I could’ve gone a little bit more aggressively. Next spring, I’ll do that. I always thought that you have to trim the top as well so that the roots are not too small for it
Oh can I come get a few patches of your creeping jenny ? LOL. I paid a lot of money for mine to put in containers this year, but I think it will come back for me so maybe it was money well spent. I am zone 6a.
can you repeat the name of that fragrant dianthus?
Wow looking amazing over there 🌱🌱💚💚 I'm doing leeks for the first time this year I'm super excited! Except i didn't Go really deep only like an inch😳 I packed them in too....are they perennial?
How am I not hearing the cicadas in your videos?! All I hear are sweet birds. Did you luck out and not get any?
New subscriber. Looking forward to your channel and journey. Nurse Judi in Scottsdale AZ and Eucharistic Minister ☦️ 🙏🏻 💙
Your angels trumpet looks very healthy and happy. Last fall, based on one of your videos, I reduced the root ball of my very large angels trumpet by half and rooted 5 cuttings from it as insurance against what felt like me attempting to kill it. 😂. Then I worried all winter about whether it would leaf out again in the spring. I’m happy to report that it survived. Both it and the 5 cuttings are growing well. Would love to see your angels trumpet later in the season in bloom. Thank you for taking the time to make and post your videos.
Hi Heather! These aqua pots are definitely game changers 🙌 Always have to include Hibiscus into garden settings. Just beautiful and forever giving during their season! 🌸 What is that in the pot behind you? I love how you angle planted them! 💚 I have a red gourd birdhouse. Love it! Sorry for my absence. I was away for awhile, dealing with an unfortunate situation, but I'm back now, and all caught up with my landscaping and filling my deck planters! Yay! Hugs to you ❤
I too have the lilac the multi stem tree. Wonderful perfume! I love it ! Your garden looks beautiful!💕💕💕👏👏🌸👩🌾
Thanks Mabel! I wish they flowered all year long!
those look amazing i cant wait for my first harvest. ive seen others say not to wash them till after that have cured or dried for minimum 3 days.. I guess the skin is delicate at first..
Yes, I let mine dry out in the soil by withholding water once the foliage browns out. I harvest a week or so after.
Great job
Thanks!
I really like the dry creek bed. Where did you get the material that you used to edge the creek bed?
I have never been so jealous of someone in my entire life 😩
Just remember a garden this big and beautiful needs lots of staff to maintain! Our small gardens may not be as grand but I’m proud that I manage it all myself and it still looks “good enough” in spite of constant battle with weeds, bugs, disease, etc 😅
I've found the only issue with the Lilac you have is that it reseeds horribly. They are beautiful though.
Really? I’ve not had that problem. At least not yet.
I have lilac shrubs smell wonderful every spring! I have that sweet elegance rose. I grow catmints as companion plants, they look super pretty together!
Wonderful combo!
Thanks for the suggestions
I have the same tree but mine doesn’t sprout suckers like that or water sprouts. Suckers/water sprouts are a sign of stress or trauma to the tree. My prairifire is a one stem though.
would there be any way you could take this same video, and just label all the varieties as you go by them? I am learning quite a bit about hydrangeas, but when you go by the big mound of blue lacecaps, my only guess is twist n shout and it could be so many other things.
Very helpful. I had no idea.
Great hearing from you…and while gardening was relaxing. Live and let live
I have about 1/2 acre dedicated to my personal garden. I forgot how much you can fit into a small space. You are rocking it! I wish I could grow lettuce & chives here in Texas, they bolt even in the winter.
I had no idea you could trim the roots. Thank you.
How do you get such nicely shaped head lettuce?
Great job👏😍
I do this but I usually have my hands on my hips. 😂
They are usually toward the top of the flower stems so it is usually easy to just clip below it and dispose of it.
First time here lovely gardens!!💚💚💚💚 And I saw so many plants I've never seen before, just lovely!!!
Mine is blooming also! One of my favorites!!
Loved your tour and excitement! We Gardeners love to see what you can grow in your zone. Love all your beautiful trees, some of which I wish I could grow, wrong zone. Thanks!
What type of soil do you use for the potatoes? And fertilizer? Your garden looks so nice. I live close to you in Manhattan so we are the same zone!
