United States

Sharing my garden and everything I've learned from it with the hope that it will inspire you to get your hands dirty. Here you'll find the ups and downs of gardening in a zone 5b, Chicago-area climate. From a different zone? No worries. The ideas and practices are pretty universal. While no longer active, I rely on my master gardener training to create and maintain a healthy garden. Let's grow together!
Winter Bird Feeding and a Grateful Mom Moment
Winter bird feeding has been a thing ever since I was a kid. Even now that my kids are young adults, they still enjoy joining me in the garden to fill the feeders in the winter time. My oldest daughter jumped at the chance to join me in the cold to slather the trees with peanut butter and hang feeders. What a feeling it is to know that the things we did together throughout their childhood. They inherited our appreciation for the garden and all the birds and other critters we share it with.
In the video, I had house wrens on my mind every time I talked about one of the world's most adaptable and therefore invasive bird species, the house sparrow, and therefore said "house wren" every time I should have said "house sparrow."

Repurposing the Christmas Tree and Other January Garden Chores
Переглядів 668День тому
After many weeks inside following my daughter's surgery, I couldn't wait to get into the garden and check a few garden chores off the list. The roses and garlic were in need of a little protection and the hellebores and sporobolus could use some tidying up. Yes, it's January. I know. All the more reason to get out there and do something productive. It's the perfect antidote for cabin fever! Hi ...
Preventing Dieback and Winterburn on Conifers and Broadleaf Evergreens
Переглядів 42628 днів тому
Preventing dieback and winterburn on conifers and broadleaf evergreens requires a two-prong approach. Since I planted several evergreens in mid October, I decided to apply Bonide's Wilt Stop to help these young plants conserve as much moisture as possible during the winter. Before applying Wilt Stop, which is incredibly sticky so be sure to use a throw-away sprayer or clean yours immediately af...

🍁🍂November Garden Tour 🍂🍁

Despite a few frosts and some snow, the November garden continues to deliver. When planning my gardens, I keep autumn in mind. I prefer multi-season plants as opposed to one-and-done types. Deciduous trees with blazing fall color, roses whose color deepens in response to cooler air and pink berries, yes pink, that get bigger as the days grow shorter are all part of the scheme in my November gar...
How NOT to Store Spring Blooming Bulbs Before Fall Planting
Переглядів 5922 місяці тому
There's a right way and a wrong way to store spring-blooming bulbs before planting in the fall and I was definitely reminded of that this year. Life got in the way and instead of storing my daffodil and tulips bulbs in a cool, dark closet, I forgot them in my hot, dark garage. The deciding factor came down to temperature and we've had a warm fall, too warm for bulbs awaiting planting. Which mea...
A Fertilizer Soak to Speed Up Rooting for Late-Planted Garlic
Переглядів 7402 місяці тому
I'm experimenting with a fertilizer soak for my hardneck garlic since I'm planting it a little late this year. Actually, I totally forgot about it! I order my garlic every year from Keene in Wisconsin and discovered in their brochure their recipe for soaking and fertilizing garlic prior to planting. It's supposed to inoculate the cloves, sort of like a vaccine, to prevent damage from nematodes ...

How to Ensure Your Mangave Lives on After Flowering

Mangave flowers seem to appear overnight. Their stalks grow incredibly fast and the flower they produce is equally as interesting (and pollinator friendly). There's lots of conflicting information about it so I took it straight from the man behin...
Plant this North American Native Shrub for Birds and Pollinators

My love for birds in the garden is what inspired me to plant Viburnum trilobum 'Redwing,' a North American native shrub whose gorgeous red berries are a delectable treat. Also known as American cranberry bush, it's a larval host plant for Spring Azure butterflies too! Redwing is a true trilobum, not a hybrid, and is part of the Chicagoland Grows plant introduction program which develops plants,...

Your daughter is your mini me! Looks like a good time was had. Enjoy your channel.
I’m a Newbie & native to the Chi😊. Love your garden 🪴
I love feeding our backyard birds, too! Great selection of birdfeeders! Suggestion: I find the Niger thistle seed goes bad/stale quickly and the goldfinches won't eat it. And it's expensive. Instead I put fine sunflower chips (from WBU) in the thistle feeder. The goldfinches and many other birds love that seed and feeder. The Northern flickers feed on it, too, and bring their babies to the feeder in the spring. We have a branch perch and stick attached to the pole system. The babies sit on the perch and the parents will feed the babies. Fun to watch! WBU sells the niger thistle but the employees agree that it goes bad quickly and they like to feed the fine sunflower chips, too. The Stellar Jays love the whole peanuts. They see me come outside and one always seems to be on the lookout. He/she will call out and the rest show up to feed. They are hogs and will eat all the sunflower seeds and suet they can get.
I hope you do a follow up. I was waiting to see all the birds come after all of your work lol thanks for sharing.
I love the repetition and space u have to enjoy seeing the mulch as well.
I have been considering winter sowing a few Salvia varieties not available locally. The plants in question are Summer Jewel Salvia (Red and Pink varieties). My concern is Salvia seeds require warmth to germinate (70°F) and warm conditions to grow. For such a small project, I am not purchasing an indoor lighting system. That said, any idea what kinds of issues I might run into winter sowing Salvia?
I’d be afraid of attracting ants on the pb when the temps get higher.
@@joycearthur5244 The pb is a winter only thing. What a mess it would be in the summer! 🐜🐜🐜
Your daughter is lovely!
Thanks Kathy ❤️
Absolutely love this series!! So glad I came across this channel while looking for some summer 2025 container inspo
Hi Melanie! So glad you joined me here!
I love it. Emma is your double! 😍 Your certainly talking my bird world. Do it all except the peanuts. I try keeping those squirrels away, but you know squirrels anyway. I do put vaseline on my shepherd hooks, so when they jump, which they can to great heights, they'll slide off 😂 I also have a box feeder out back and 2 cardinal feeders filled with safflower. Happy Birdwatching ❤ Always look forward to when our Hummingbird Gems return!
Why not feed the squirrels as well? They are just as hungry as the birds. i don’t understand why some people will feed one species and harm another. shame on you
@@kari3368 😂 oh Kari. Don't worry about me and what I do. I don't care what you do! Thanks
Hi Gina! My parents have a pole with multiple feeders on it and if they don’t Vaseline it, the squirrels wipe them out so fast.
@@heatherhereshegrows👍so true!
If you feed hummingbirds: Never use vaseline or oil based product on or around the feeder, ground or hooks. Problem with ants? Use an ant moat filled with water only.
Love this! I learned about new food ideas (natural PB!) & feeder types today. thank you! Our feeders are visible from kitchen. When our girls were young, I kept a laminated “Backyard Birds of New England” brochure on the kitchen table so we could examine & learn together. (I’ve since replaced that tattered one, but have & use one today).
@@lm8006 what a great idea to always keep a bird ID chart available!
Loved the video and all the info you shared. The bed will be so beautiful in 2025. I must say that I did cringe when you had the ajuga resting on your leg while using the knife.
Thank you! I can see why that would be a cringe moment.
Hope your daught gets well soon. I understand thr feeling of getting outside and puttering. It's therapeutic. It feeds the soul.😊
Thank you! Gardening is good in so many ways.
You're doing amazing, beautiful garden! I cant help but notice that all the other yards have only grass, square, grass.
Thank you so much! Grass is important too as an anchor and gives the eye a place to rest so I like it for that reason. But it certainly is nice to have the best of both worlds around our home.
Love this thank you very much for keeping organics out of the landfills 😄😃😄😁😆
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for keeping the jugs out of the landfill
They're great for making little greenhouses over tender veg seedlings like tomatoes and peppers when night temps in spring drop too.
I love your channel so cool what you’ve grown in your yard
Thank you so much!
Super cool green bee
Beautiful biodiversity❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
So cool never see butterfly like that.
I am so glad I found your channel! I love the variety you have! That thunbergia! Great video! Deanna @gardensglory
Hi Deanna! Welcome and thanks for watching. That thunbergia is something else and bloomed to the very end last season. I think she'll be a regular here.
@ I just ordered three😊
Look at you conserving and recycling 🙌 For whatever reason, I cut back my Hellabores in the springtime. I think they should be our state flower! Best wishes to your daughters progress 🙏 I have been sick, down and out of commission since my birthday Dec 14. It's not been fun in the least! Prayers welcomed 🥰
Oh no Gina! I'm sorry to hear you've been unwell and hope you're through the worst of it. Certainly not a fun way to start the new year. As for the hellebores, I second your idea of hellebores for our state flower. Wonderful choice! Get well soon, my friend.
@@heatherhereshegrowsThank you, Heather ❤ ... yes ... much better over the last couple of days, Thank God! 🙌🙏
Something you might want to consider doing is putting fallen leaves into a metal trash can and weed whack the heck out of them! It makes excellent mulch or leave in the can with a bit of water and a lid in a hot spot in the yard and you will have the most glorious compost. Get well wishes for your daughter 💐
That sounds like a fantastic idea! Thanks for the tip! And thanks for your kind thoughts regarding my daughter. She's improving every day.
Happy new year to you too ❤
Hi Kim! Happy New Year!
Happy New Year 🎉🎉🎉
Hi Susan! Happy New Year!
Hope your daughter has a good recovery. So glad you were able to do some work in the garden, and film it too!
Thanks Carolyn! The garden has always been such wonderful therapy. Happy New Year!
Your idea about the strawberry vanilla hydrangea having a dark green backdrop was a great one. Love limbing up too! That area is going to look amazing! Deanna @gardensglory
Thank you so much, Deanna! I find that plants get lost without some sort of darker backdrop. Limbing up provides another opportunity to add more plants so its a win all the way around!
My pugster blue is an amazing plant. We had a very unusual arctic blast cold snap here on cape cod two winters ago and most people lost their butterfly bushes. I thought mine was a goner. It looked like a goner but it came back better than ever. Love your channel and I know this is an older video but I just subscribed today:)
Hi there and thank you so much for joining me here! I had all but given up on buddleia after losing them after a year or two. Then the pugsters came along and WOW! Have you tried the other colors too? I planted a few pink ones for my mom last summer and I'm excited to see how those perform.
@@heatherhereshegrows Not yet. I only have one pugster blue. My garden is 3 years old and I started with a blank slate. Literally just a dirt lot so there was so many plants to buy and I wanted them all LOL so only one pugster so far:). This journey with UA-cam is a trip...
Ok I was supposed to be done buying seeds but now I must have some of the plants mentioned here :)
Oh I know that feeling well! LOL
Hey there! New subscriber! Love the variety you have in your garden. Definitely giving me ideas for plants I still “need”. I live only couple hours south of you. Thanks for the tour! Deanna @ GardensGlory
Funny how you never know how much you "need" something until you see it in someone else's garden. When that happens, I'll search high and low for it.
And your neighbor likes having to edge that grass line, now?
My neighbor loves the sideyard too and my husband handles all the edging so it's a win for everyone.
I love your garden!
Hi Toni, thank you!
OOH! New subscriber. I started a side yard bed in a similar configuration this year and thank you! this is so inspiring and helpful!
Fantastic! What are you must-have plants, trees and shrubs for the space?
Good information. I need to use the rain water I have left in the few warmer days coming up. Merry Christmas.
A few years ago, I forgot to empty the rain barrel and the thing split when the water became a giant ice tube. Live and learn! Happy New Year!
Where do you buy the bulbs from?
I find them at local garden centers as well as big box stores like Home Depot and Menards. They’re also available via mail order.
Here in Minnesota zone 5, it’s snowing today. What are your thoughts about wrapping with Burlap? I’m guessing it’s too late to spray, though the weather ppl say it will be 40 over the weekend. Love your channel and great information. Happy Holidays🎉
@@kimolsen1328 Hi Kim! Yes, it’s too late for this now but the burlap would help, especially if you have salt spray issues on evergreens near the road. If your ground isn’t totally frozen yet, you could also give them a good drink around the drip line which is the area beneath the outermost tips of branches. That’s where your feeder roots are and where moisture absorption occurs.
Looking for a good quality rain barrel. Can you share the source for yours…and any set up tips? Love your curved paver stand setup
Hi there! I bought this one at Home Depot a few years ago and checked to see if they still stocked it. They don't but there are several other options available. You might consider a flat-backed model if it will be against the house and in a tight spot. Just be sure to elevate it on cinder blocks or pavers, it helps increase pressure for better flow. I'd like to add a diverter to it this year so that when it fills, the water is redirected either to another barrel or a gutter extension.
Thank you for sharing, I live in Florida so we dont have these worries for freezing. But winds are a different story, so very helpful. ???Where is your rain barrel from, do you have a link??? Ty
Hi Janetta! It's from Home Depot but it doesn't look like it's still available. Here's a like to one that's similar... www.homedepot.com/p/RTS-Home-Accents-50-Gal-Rain-Barrel-Walnut-Color-with-Brass-Spigot-55100009005681/202403933

@@ginafriend1690 Hi Gina! There were a few critters out when I filmed. Merry Christmas!
This was very helpful. Thanks!
Glad it helped and thanks for watching!
Your video popped up for me and I love the helianthus! I hope I can find it for my garden! The jade princess millet is so easily grown from seed. I grew a bunch this year and they were great in my planters
I was thrilled when I found that helianthus and yes, the millet is an easy one. Gotta love those! Thanks for watching!
I LOVE my Coral Berry! Mine is “Candy”. It’s so beauty in winter!
That's a good one too! So many seasons of interest.
It’s just so fun to make new plants, and I LOVE that wallpaper behind you!!
It's very satisfying and budget friendly! And the wallpaper is from Rifle Paper Company. I believe it's called Fable and comes in several colors. I love the black and white.
Succulents are my favorite. I had a really ratty looking pot of hen-n-chicks after last winter. Michelle @gardeningTLC did a wonderful video on how to revive them. It takes some drastic measures, lol, but it’s sure worth it. Thanks, Heather. Love your videos.
Oh, I'll have to check out her video. And thanks so much for watching!
I love succulents too. So many colors and shades of green to enjoy all year.
Once you start, It's hard to stop. The biggest challenge for me now is finding space for everything!
Love Succulents. The easiest plants for survival! Beautiful, Heather 💚

I like the videos that you give growing tips anout the plants but its very frustrating when you dont know the name
I have so many plants and sometimes it's difficult to remember them all on the spot. Do you recall at what point in the video you saw a plant that was unidentified?
New subscriber here, love your channel! I agree the gorilla cart and a hori hori knife must haves. I also suggest a Root Slayer shovel, indispensable. And very cute hat you are wearing.
Hi Donna! Yes, the root slayer is a fabulous tool. I love mine. It was a gift from a friend and works wonders.
I have that wagon, it’s great!
It really takes a beating and keeps on going for years. Can't say enough about it!
