That "red spike" is Awesome! 🙌 Maybe a couple of Arborvitae Tater Tots in that Honorine Jobert area and mix in some Skyward Pink Veronica's, if enough variation between heights together, would be nice to fill in with color. But ... not like you don't have Arborvitaes already growing there 🤷♀️ plus You'll figure it out anyway! Very nice tour explained on side garden, Heather. Looks fantastic, and so do you! 🥰
WOW! Looks great. I've taken notes LOL -- I want to add a lot of those plants .... the Heliopsis Bleeding Hearts, the small Joe Pye Weed, the pink veronica, the vanity verbena .... thanks for the tour!
@@heatherhereshegrows Hello! I just finished your video and started a new note page with “all of the things”. 🤭 The Veronica Skyward Pink is going to have to replace my current one. I love how sturdy and “together” it looks. That Joe Pye will definitely end up somewhere in my yard. Last week my daughter and I went on a garden tour in our town and there was one pollinator friendly yard where the front yard was completely native species with little paths through everything and it was really fun. But yeah, the Joe Pye was so tall; I mean you were thinking you’re in Vietnam or some thing! It was crazy junglelike - yours is a good compromise. Thanks for the response. Subbed. PS: Do you know anything about building a berm? Any videos on that? I want to but I chicken out when it comes to new things.
Edible rose - wow! That's new to me. I'll have to research since you say there are many edible flowers. You've accumulated beautiful, interesting plants. Thank you.

Love your garden! It is very inspiring, I'm taking lots of notes! I have a corner lot in zone 6, and I'm trying to find plants that can screen the big ugly electrical boxes in my yard, but that are also able to tolerate dog pee....
Ah yes, that’s challenging. I’ve witnessed dog walkers deliberately walk their dogs over to the edge of my side yard as though I built this space for that reason! And then they leave behind “the gift”!
I love your selection! You space your plants so far apart. I have them a little one a hands length apart to cover the ground. I don’t have to worry about mulching anymore and the spots that are bare I plant creeping phlox and thyme.
I actually plant tighter than recommended to shade out weeds faster. It’s probably not that’s obvious on camera. I don’t want to go too close and this works well for me. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful garden, enjoyed seeing the combination of plant choices. I was reading up on the Sting arb, says deer resistant but the deer like it for fall rutting, so needs protection during the fall.
It's so funny how UA-cam recommends videos. I also expanded my left side yard garden this year. My neighbors, too (I pray), love the garden as well. Unfortunately, I deal with an HOA. This makes things tricky😢
Hi there! I have an HOA too and certain members of it walked past my side yard garden as I was building it. Fortunately they were ok with it but I think I was supposed to “get permission” for it before I started digging 😬
Hi Heather! I just discovered your UA-cam channel for the first time today. So it took me forever to watch your video because I kept having to pause in order to write down the names of all your beautiful plants. Where do you purchase most of your plants? Do you order many online? I also wanted to tell you I love the name of your UA-cam channel. Another favorite name similar to yours on UA-cam is How’s it Growing? She has a lovely garden as well🪻🌺🌼
@@Jen-u9r Hi Jen! Thanks so much for joining me here! I know Laura from How’s It Growing. She’s wonderful! I find a lot of great stuff a Sunrise Greenhouse in Grant Park, IL. They’re my favorite. But I also shop Home Depot and Lowe’s, as well as small nurseries in the area.

I love your flowers 👌💕I have questions I got American gold Rush to avoid black spots and I still got that problem how you keep your black eye Susan so healthy
Hi there! While less likely to develop leaf spot issues, it’s not immune as you know. Theirs a fungal cause and a bacterial, both of which can camp out in the debris beneath your plants so good sanitation is important. Also, overhead irrigation can be a breeding ground. Instead use soaker hoses to avoid getting the leaves wet. Good air circulation is important too.
Beautiful side garden! Do you dig out your dahlias every year or just leave them in the ground. The ones that stay short are so pretty and would do well in the front of my landscape. Everything looks good after the storms! I lost power for 12 hours and my basement flooded but it could have been worse.
I’m in Chicago. I’m new to gardening. The squirrels 🐿️ ate all the buds on my cookies and cream hibiscus 🌺. I sprayed needles oil it was too strong. I mastered tropical plants, so I figured the spray concoction that I use to deter bugs on my tropical plants might work? I am trying Castile peppermint soap, very diluted hydrogen peroxide mixed in distilled water. Any tips to keep squirrels away? I planted cat mint and other plants that are supposedly repellant. Any tips would be appreciated 🙏.
Hello! I’ve noticed in my garden that if I have summer blooming alliums planted near plants deer tend to like, I have fewer issues. But there’s no telling what a hungry deer will tolerate. I have used organic repellants but they’re very “fragrant” and the neighbors are not fans.
Hi there! Mulch is the secret to weed suppression in my new sideyard this year but I plant tighter than recommended so plants knit together faster. They’ll shade out the soil and prevent seeds from germinating. I also pull them regularly following rain storms.
I noticed that part of the new garden bed borders the sidewalk. Do you have problems with dogs peeing on the plants? I'm trying to find some plants that can withstand dog urine. Any suggestions?
I’ve caught a few people walking their dogs into the bed to pee. Very frustrating and disrespectful IMO. So far, American Goldrush rudbeckia, Millenium Allium and Neon sedum are holding their own despite the golden shower. 😂
Beautiful garden and we can hear the passion in your explanation ! Keep up the great work!
