      some of it is still powering your 4090... What 3dfx achieved is the ability to scale up performance with just adding extra chips, which interface with each other naturally. This is how VLSI on the current GPU architectures works. Won't be surprised if there are other 3dfx-firsts still carried over!

    awesome card, i still have a DX and an STX which i'm using in my main PC right now. excellent sound quality, waaaay better than more modern cards like the creative AE-5. i actually tried replacing the STX with the AE-5 only to go back to the STX a couple of weeks later, it just sounds so much better. excellent video as always btw.

    •  23 дні тому

      I would no doubt use it in the main PC if it had a PCI slot. Another good thing with this card is its excellent Linux support. Put it in a machine running the just released Linux Mint 22 with a 6.8 Kernel and it works just as well now as when it came out. My biggest problem now is that I lack a good sett of speakers.

    • @manp
      @manp 23 дні тому

      consider getting the X version then, it uses a PCIE bridge and a supplementary power connector. other than that it's basically the same card. they're usually available from ebay and not that expensive. the STX and STX II on the other hand are quite rare and usually go for an insane amout of money. i was lucky to get one for 50€ but it's usually closer to 2 or 3 times that. love your channel btw expecially your calm and polite manners! 👍

    Correct about the CADDuo, I dealt with a lot of those systems, though some were SSI+SI or SSE+SE instead of just dual-SI or dual-SE, and indeed they usually had additional RAM. Glad to notice in a later video you obtained a TRAM upgrade. Note that, by default, if one card has TRAM but the other doesn't, then the combined desktop area will make a textured 3D task slow down if it "spills over" into the half of the screen that is driven by the second card. The way round this is to either configure each card to send out its own X display, giving two separately managed 1280x1024 areas, or of course fit the second card with the same TRAM upgrade. Concerning the CPU module, would you be interested in doing a straight swap for a dual-R12K/360? This is because I can make use of the 300MHz cores to make custom-mod R12K/300 modules for O2, while you get a speed bump. Drop me a line if interested, just search for "mapesdhs SGI", find the Yahoo email adr on my contact page. 7:35 - A note about the compression connectors: if it ever becomes faulty, I've had good success simply swapping the bad connector with a good one from a known-ok but unwanted board such as a copper FC card. It's an easy swap, just a couple of allen key type bolts, etc. They are though more sturdy than people think; if dust does get on them, just use a very soft bristle brush to wipe the dust away (like a super fine artist brush), or most of the time a can of inert compressed air works ok, though it is important to blow from the side of the connector that does not have a gap, across to the side that does (ie. do not blow air into the gap). Btw, it was I who supplied RMC with the MXE upgrade for his Octane videos (likewise, GN got their O2 and Indigo2 parts sets from me, and LGR's Indigo2 came from me), and yes a simple piece of card works fine for covering the connector (what I do is cover the inner side of the card with ordinary clear tape, to ensure no fibers from the card can come away). 11:10 - Yes, that's the NIC module which provides the MAC host ID for the extra 10/100 port, and thus provides the licensing code required for flexlm, hence why dual-user systems could have separately licensed per-user software. It also means a card failure won't ruin the licensing, just move the NIC onto a new card, or indeed into the frontplane of a separate machine. 17:40 - You can also enter the command "system" which will display similar information along with certain part numbers; this is useful on VPro systems for discerning exactly which type of VPro card is present, since the normal hinv doesn't give enough details. 21:40 - At this point the PROM doesn't know where the installed OS is, hence why SystemPartition and OSLoadPartition are missing from the printenv output. You can try entering "resetenv", though this may not help if the disk is completely empty. NB: a bug in the PROM means that whenever a disk is changed for another, or resetenv is used, it's possible for the definition of OSLoadFilename to be erased; if this happens, just enter "setenv OSLoadFilename /unix" and that will fix it (only needs to be done once). Thus bug is present in all SGI PROMs AFAIK; usually it never matters, but doing an upgrade or somesuch can make it occur. 26:25 - True, the original -003 and -004 revs of the 0887 boards are a bit more flakey, better to have the -005 if possible, though I've encountered plenty of faulty -005s aswell. A note for others reading this: any 0887 board has a max RAM of 2GB and the best possible CPU is the dual-R12K/400. Upgrade to the later 1467 (any version will suffice) in order to have access to the max dual-600 CPU and max 8GB RAM, though a later rev of the 1367 will probably help compatibility with some 1GB and 2GB RAM kits, and it's generally wise to upgrade the Xbow and PSU at the same time. Note there is normally a cover bracket across the RAM modules to hold them in place (you mention this later), it clips underneath the XBow heatsink and onto the adjacent long metal rod; these are often missing from systems as users just threw them away, but it's a problem for shipping (the RAM can fall out), so I make replicas using aluminium plate. Once a system is where it's supposed to be on site, the presence of the bracket isn't really relevant anymore, though I have found that some variants of 3rd-party RAM have a tendency to pop out of a slot if they're not held in place (perhaps not quite matching the physical spec for the DIMM width, length, etc.) 27:40 - It is much easier to do this with the system resting on its front, so that the boards can be lifted out vertically. It means one can ensure even pressure on the boards when they're going in and out, preventing gravity from making them slip slightly out of position. Ditto for the PSU, PCI cage, and especially the gfx assembly, much easier to work with the system resting on its front. Trust me, I've done such board removals & insertions probably a couple of thousand times by now. :D Handy tip: if you encounter a mystery system (such as an ebay listing), a mbd with a black handle will be an older 0887 board, whereas a mbd with a silver handle will be a later 1467 board (unless a sneaky seller has swapped or painted them). 28:30 - Another tip: at the top of the chassis, underneath where the top of the mbd assembly will slide in, there are two thin metal guard strips that extend across the mesh grill, to help keep it in position. However, it is quite common for these strips to become slightly bent downwards, and if they do then they can catch on the top of the mbd assembly, making it very difficult to remove. Thus, while you have the chance, just press each strip upwards slightly in the middle, giving it a slight bend, so that it is permanently out of the way. At this point I'm guessing the CPU module is a dual-195, or maybe a dual-250 (less likely given the minimal RAM present), though it could be the entry dual-175. There may also be the dual-225, but they're very rare, so far I've never come across one, and I've dealt with dozens of Octanes and Octane2s. 30:42 - A dual-195, yeah that figures. :) 31:18 - From the R12K/270 onwards, the heatsink casting changed to be a darker grey with a more gritty appearance. It's an easy way to spot if a CPU is an R12K of some kind. Sometimes there are differences in the locking bolts used aswell, but I don't know if these are consistent in terms of predicting particular SKUs. It's funny, I actually prefer the darker grey. I don't know why, somehow I just find the older shiney modules too blingey, to me they look cheap, but then I'm an old git, darker = better, black hifi/PC cases, etc. I'll keep using black until something darker comes along. :D I even resprayed an Indy case black (a unit that had a lot of scratches, the respray looked much better, and suitably menacing). 34:05 - *Some* 256MB DIMMs found on the later 1467 mbds can be used with the older 0887, namely the NEC 9470223 (which is often found on older mbds aswell), Kingston KSG-OCT/512, DataRAM 62649 and DataRAM 62621, whereas in my experience the 9010021 will often not work on a 0887 mbd (seems to vary, so I avoid using them on 0887s), hence you got luck there. The most common kit found on later mbds which definitely won't work on the 0887 is the IBM or NEC 9010036. I've accumulated numerous faulty 256MB, 512MB and 1GB DIMMs,with which I think there is good scope for potential repair. I have the required tools, just need the time, but I probably won't get to it until mid 2025. 42:20 - The root account is there (probably guest aswell), they've just been hidden from the login screen. :D You should still be able to enter 'root' as the user name, though like as not it will also have a password. Just edit /etc/passwd if need be (mount via another disk or from a booted OS installation CD). Congrats on getting the system up and running! Believe me when I say, getting a faulty Octane to work again properly can sometimes be a lot more frustrating. :D Pity I didn't come across your video when it first came out, typical YT. Looking forward to your TRAM upgrade video which I'll watch next. Btw, I was wrapping a 600/V10 Fuel while this video was playing. :)
