Full Tour of a Bike Shop Owner's Bike Collection | Time To Sell Them Off?
I am closing my bike shop down and have come to the realization that I have way too many bikes and now that I am no longer going to have a warehouse to store them, I need to cut some loose!
I have had a lot of great memories on many of these bikes (some of them I have no real relationship with so wouldn't be a loss). Which ones should I keep, which ones need to go?
Some of them I really do not want to lose but if I need to, I will sell them all (except my wife and kid's bikes!).
www.bikingroots.com for our current closing sale which will be over soon

We don't sell Santa Cruz but have to give credit where credit is due! They make some pretty sweet bikes and for some people, they tick all the boxes they are looking for. While my Spur is a little bit lighter, the Tallboy can probably hold its own a bit better when stuff gets choppy and I was impressed with the in-frame...

Quick look at the Forbidden Dreadnought which could be your next high pivot enduro bike!
Bro, they should have necer changed the frame design 😢 The 2022 was the crorect choice.
Just watching this now. My wife bought two bikes from you in August 2020 and they have been great. Not sure how we managed to get some at that point. We ended up leaving the Houston area a couple months after. Best of luck on your future endeavors!
Great Video! I have the HT2 and overall it's been OK but the fork was garbage for my weight at 72kg it was solid, so I fitted a Recon air fork which is night and day. Deore is great, the hubs are not with cheap bearings which failed within months of light use. For the sake of a few dollars it should have had Shimano hubs and an air fork. Get the H1 is my advice.
Thanks for the comment and for your advice! Yeah great bike and crazy good deal when they were clearing them out (Wish I had bought more to re-sell). Yes, I agree the fork was garbage but for the clearance price, tough to argue. Glad you enjoyed it
Theres no shame in going out of business...You are ahead of 99% of ALL OTHER HUMANS...at least you tried...nobody know's how that feels unless they try...You did good. I know that feels good, and you can be very proud of that forever.
Thanks for the comment! Yeah It has been tough and not fun this last month or so, especially moving everything out and saying goodbye to customers… Yes, even though it hurts and I am left licking my financial wounds from it, It was a great experience and would have always regretted it or wondered what if… hopefully later it will make more sense why I shut it down and new opportunities open up because of it. Take care
My first clipless pedals. Needed a single metal washer between the outer cleat bolt and shoe to micro adjust the angle of my Look pedals and eliminate knee pain, as suggested by my local bike shop guy, brilliant, worked a treat. That just aint happening in todays retail cycle world, much the same here in the uk I'm affraid, its a massive shame to loose such great knowlede and service from guys like you. Good luck to you and your family in all that comes next. Paul ( from Scotland )
Thanks Paul for the comment! Scotland sounds like a fun place to ride! Yeah, hopefully the experts like that will still be around… somehow… Like you said, that one on one help and communication is important and super helpful on specialty items like mountain bikes… models change though I guess, so we just have to figure out how to get our information in other ways! Take care
You can remove the shock by undoing 3 bolts, am surprised that was not mentioned. The cables running through the headset are no problem, I have a Spark RC Pro and have stripped it down and rebuilt it a couple of times with no problems. Press fit is also no problem, I use an XTR crank with a Shimano XTR BB. Easily fitted and removed "dry". I use a Rockshox Ultimate Twistloc in preference to the Twinlock.
Thanks for the feedback, yeah I guess an extra shock bolt isn’t that big of a deal, some like it concealed while others want to see it. I guess it is a preference thing… I would say for most people, press fit is a problem and requires more effort and prone to more creaking… One of the reasons a lot of new designs are moving away from press fit. I guess for most the headset isn’t that big of a deal to clean, but when you want to replace, it just requires more effort and a bleed that normally wouldn’t be needed. But, that’s my opinion. Clean look though and a sweet bike! Enjoy yours, sounds like a sweet build
@@BikingRoots Any creaking from a PF BB is due to poor manufacturing tolerances and little or no QA.
I just bot a Pivot mach 4sl XX and tricked it out
Congrats! Sounds like a lot of fun
Here's an even easier fix: Dab some grease on solder. Cut a small piece that will fit on the circular contact on the battery. Re-install with the solder on the battery contact and bingo derailleur works again. Temporary fix but gets the job done. I'd imagine actually soldering solder to the battery contact wouldnt be too hard and would be more permanent. Not as good of a fix but easier and works.
Hmm, interesting… thanks for the suggestion and comment… I’ll have to check that out and try it!
@ I can confirm the temporary fix works. No issues on my ride last weekend. Warranty replacement will be here soon.
@ Awesome, glad it worked… I’ll need to try if it happens again (hopefully not). Glad you have a warranty coming though. Take care
Anyone added an ebike conversion kit to this?
That sounds fun! Haven’t heard of one, but don’t see why they couldn’t
Move your bike shop to tucson! Check it out
Ha! I wish! I love Tucson and lived there for 19 years. If I knew I could be stronger than other market forces hurting the bike industry right now, then maybe I would but too many unknowns and retail in general is just very difficult right now…
Got my frame tge other day...took 5 months to arrive in my country
Oh wow, where are you located? That’s a long wait! Glad you finally got it though!
@BikingRoots manila, philippines. Just that my size (xl) wasnt readily available here in my country
@@merlingili9507 oh nice, ok cool! Well enjoy!
You mentioned that bike shops shifting towards repair shops, you believe will be the future. Aside from the repair piece do you think there is anything else to make those shops stand out? I’d love a retail bike shop, but I also understand that now is not the time to open one. I’m looking for a compelling niche.
Sorry for the delayed response… Hmm, that is an excellent question… It will depend I think a lot on the area you are in. I’ve learned that there are a few things at play in this business… Some things you/I can’t control… For me I couldn’t control the local government shutting down a lot of our popular trails to build large retention ponds that somehow are supposed to help when we have 30” of rain in 24 hours (which won’t help). We do not have government or private businesses that help much with trail development and maintenance… it is all volunteer base… So that would be my first assignment is to make sure that there is enough opportunity for people to do the sport and if there are any potential developments on the horizon that could increase that demand in your area… next I would then become an expert in knowing what the current needs are and if the people are getting everything they need to do that sport. When you talk to enough people, you start to see gaps in the market and potentially opportunities to fill that void. In the end, due your research, don’t risk the farm, and realize you’ll never have all the information or answers and you’ll have to take a step in the dark and just trust your gut and have faith it will work out OR you’ll learn some valuable lessons along the way…
I'm 5'6 tall what is better 29er small or medium?
I’d say a medium 27.5 or 29 would be fine. They don’t offer a small in a 29 on the bobcat, only the team marin. Smallest 29 you could go would be the medium
trying to figure out why the rear shock is upside down, as you mentioned. but 2024 they went back to facing up, so i don't know if having upside down had issues??
Good question, I never heard of any issues, and it is pretty common for some brands to do it upside down, it just comes down to the suspension design and patents and what not. When they went to the high pivot design for the new model, looks like the design had to do it right side up, which I’m fine with
What is recommended size for 5'6 height
Sorry for the delay, I’d say a medium would be a good size for you. I’m 5’8 and love the medium
2024 model they don't carry the rift zone 1 anymore? so now the top model is the rift zone 2? after visual on close up..,,, small details they missed...no bottom tube protection, upper head up no grummets for the cables :(
Yeah they changed colors for the 2025 year and then made a dropper standard on the 1. Yeah they’ve never really had good bottom tube protection on these, some on alpine trail. Correct, no grommets for cables anymore but they sit pretty snug in there so I don’t recall any issues with cable noise, so I think they work fine.
I just checked and the crank set is €30
Thanks, Sorry this video is from many years ago so pricing does change. We actually ended up having issues with this crankset and started using and recommending another one
You work at a bike shop? I´m curious which are the best sellers?
I own this bike shop or did (we just closed down our retail shop). Best sellers for the Houston market tend to be trail bikes probably just because they are less expensive and can handle most terrain pretty well. We did have some customers wanting a high end race bike like this but it is more rare for our area. I don’t have the stats on other areas but it probably just depends on what terrain is around that city
Thank you! Fixed my AXS XX1 pin in about a half hour with the helping hands of my son. Little to no soldering experience. 🙏👍
Oh yay! Yes, helping hands is a plus when doing this repair! Glad you could fix it and show your son. Thanks for sharing and take care!
Hello,Trek Supercaliber 9.7 or 9.8 arasında büyük fark varmı? Nedir?
Thanks for the question! Carbon wheels appears to be the biggest difference (at least here in USA). The 9.7 build has GX AXS but alloy wheels. You can then go to the 9.8 shimano build, sheds a couple lbs and you get carbon wheels. They also have a 9.8 X0 build but it is almost 2k more expensive. If you like the carbon wheels on the 9.8, go with that, but if you want to buy your own, buy the 9.7 and pick your own wheels would be my decision to make. May come down to colors too! Good luck!
Bir sorum daha olacak.Santa Cruz megatower CC custom29 or Trek supercaliber sl 9.7 gen2 or Trek Fuel ex 8 gx axs ARASINDA KALDIM.HANGİSİNİ ÖNERİRSİNİZ.Thank you.Hangisi en sağlam ve hızlı,güçlü.@@BikingRoots
@@egemenpolat9964 Sorry for the delayed response, been super busy. I would say where do you see yourself riding the most? All great bikes but for different purposes. Supercaliber is your lightweight, cross country race bike that will be light and fast but not as confident on chunkier knarly trails. Mega Tower is your longer travel enduro bike that is built to handle big jumps, tough terrain and soak up all of the rough stuff for you, but a lot heavier than a supercaliber. Fuel EX kind of splits the two as far as weight, travel, and capability. More of an all rounder for lots of terrain. Again, depends on what your goals/dream ride scenario is. Wherever you see yourself riding the most, get a bike that will handle that the best. Good luck!
Microshift yuk
Haha, why?! I’ve had good luck with them over the years on numerous bikes. Pretty durable and accurate on our rentals and inexpensive
I have a 2023 5 and i love it. Few upgrades and its perfect
Nice congrats on the 5! What upgrades did you end up doing?
Hi there ! Thanks for the video it really helped me Out , ill be getting it to start , what air suspension would u recomend to upgrade ? Thanks ! From México
Hello in Mexico! Thanks for the comment and question. I would recommend a Rockshox Judy or Recon which has and air spring and a quick release axle and straight steerer tube. The Recon is a bit lighter and has a compression damper and 32mm stanchions so stiffer than Judy. Just keep in mind 27.5 the only wheel option for 120mm option. 29 only goes up to 100mm for some dumb reason. If you need 120 in 29, go for manitou markhor.
Thanks alot ! Will.vonsdider your comment🎉
@@AlejandroM-j7n Hola! I bought a 2022 Marin Bobcat 4 in Ajijic. The shop went out of business and thought I'd have a problem buying parts. Most components can be bought from Amazon luckily such as chains, shifters, cassettes etc. The front fork is really mediocre and the air schock would be an upgrade. My preference would be a Trek bike if I started over.
And what’s the app called?
So sorry missed this question. SRAM AXS is the app
What happens if it runs out mid ride?
You become a single speeder! Hopefully it is the right gear or you have a backup battery. That is one of the cons of AXS.
Looks like a dirt jump bike trial bike even a bmx with bigger wheels A proper bike looks like it can do it all
Yeah, it basically is now. Its a popular bike with BMX/jumping people that need a fun beefy hardtail. Only con is the weight. If you want to change wheelset in the future though, go for the 2 or the 3 which has thru axle in the back
Thanks for sharing. Just got my GX eagle AXS. Then saw a guy advertising his pin repair service. Started reading about bunches of peoples with pin issues. Was worried.
Oh nice! That’s good people are repairing them. Yeah with all the engineering dollars SRAM has and failed pogo pins, you’d think they would recall or at least change the design. Unfortunately the design change was to remove the bolts so you can’t remove and repair/replace as easy! Well played SRAM. This isn’t all of them though and hopefully yours will be fine as I’ve seen many go a good amount of time without issues, so who knows
I'm transferring from bmx to MTB, plan to be doing dirt jumping and trail riding mostly. For something budget and good for beginners, would this be your top recommendation? Thanks for the review!
Thanks for the comment, sorry for delayed response. Yes, San Quentin is a popular beginner MTB for people coming from BMX! The frames are very tough, geometry is very aggressive and should be great for you! See if you can test ride one and see what you think. I think you’ll like them. Good luck!
@BikingRoots thanks for the advice!
Can I turn the tubeless to inner tube?
Technically if you changed the tires to tubeless ready tires and wrapped the rims with rim tape, added tubeless valves and sealant, yes you could make it tubeless
Single speed too Yes sir Of course I’m buying
Blue
is blue one available ?
no they discontinued the colors, so you’ll have to go used or find old stock. Marin updated the colors
Hello from Germany! Just thinking about buying a _SPUR_ here in Germany online: There is the one in _deep sea green_ from 2021 I think for € 4.139 in my size M and the newer 2022 in _aqua_ for €3.999 both with the SRAM GX drivetrain. Hard decision, sadly not with UDH. Generally hard to find _TRANSITION_ bikes over here in Germany. Thanks for your details on the SPUR!
Hello in Germany! Sorry for late reply, have been closing down our retail location. Did you end up getting the Spur? Both sound like good options and sweet colors. Yeah UDH would be nice but have to go with the new colors and pay more so you’ll have to decide if it is worth it to you. Take care and good luck!
Pros and cons. Difference between air over coil rear shock. Whats more consistent. Less maintenance (if there is any) Looking at the xr carbon *comes with rear coil*
Sorry for late reply. From my experience, coil (once you get the right spring weight) can be better for bigger riders or more aggressive high flying riders but it does add weight. There is less maintenance however with coil. Air gives you as lighter package with more adjustability on the fly. You gain weight or lose weight or change your riding style, you just change the air pressure, adjust your rebound and compression, add or remove tokens, and you’re good to go. Coil, you do not have all those options and it isn’t as easy to adjust. Hope that helps
hello, is it worth it for 1600 dollars new?
I would say so!
Kg?
Dang
what's it's weight?
about 34 lbs
Dang why
Exactly this _TRANSITION Spur_ is on sale here in Germany and I'm thinking buying it more and more whereas I wanted a _SRAM Transmission_ capable bike or frame respectively but the _SPUR_ is offered for just € 4.199 with a mechanical GX by SRAM. Hard to decide... ;-))
Oh nice! Yeah that was the debate I had as well as I probably mentioned in the video. For me, yes I would have like to have the option for transmission, but the price difference was over $2k if I remember correctly! Not worth it for me! I decided to just do the older GX AXS shifting to still have wireless, just not UDH transmission. Loved it with that and doubt I would have loved it $2k more to have transmission! Good luck
Super Mullet ftw! 😅
Glad you like it! You should buy it
You riding my super mullet just made my day. but seriously ill pick it up if you dont sell it... just dont throw away that master peice.
Haha, glad you enjoyed that. Ok, yeah so far, no offers ;-)
Not going to be a positive comment. Houston is trash for mountin biking. Couldn't think of anywhere worse than Houston. 2nd Trail Forks? You can't do a fucking thing on the app without the pro subscription and boy does it remind you constantly. I've tried to give TF a shot but it just is not up to speed with modern GUI programming or subscription model and app best practices. Not to mention they stole the majority of the data from the public and it's now hidden behind a paywall. No thanks to TrailFucks

I am sorry to hear that you are closing your store. Will you be moving to online sales? Regardless, I wish you success in your future endeavors. Hopefully, we will meet on the trails again, especially if you come to Sugarland.
Thanks for the comment. We'd like to keep selling some things online or just being an affiliate, still working that out and seeing what our vendors will allow without a physical store (usually they won't sell to you anymore). Yeah, hopefully we will! I haven't been to Sugarland in forever

I’d be stoked to own the Rockhopper. Should definitely keep it
Ha! Lots of love for the rockhopper. Sold it to my friend locally already so it will live on(at least here in Houston). Take care
I would definitely buy that rock hopper if I was local...
Nice! Yeah it was a cool bike. My friend actually just bought it while I was editing this video! It will stay in the Houston area apparently. Take care
Wow! That’s a collection. What size is the spur? Or did I miss that? I’d be interested in that and /or the norco e-bike.
Spur was a medium and actually just sold ;-(. Literally while I was editing this over the weekend! I will miss that bike. Ebike is still available. S2 size so 5’4 - 5’8. Also have an s3 but brand new
