Upgrading and Riding My New Transition Spur All Country Bike

  • Recently I purchased an NX Build of the Transition Spur non UDH model. Transition recently updated the Transition Spur to allow UDH and therefore SRAM's Transmission drivetrain. It was a hefty price jump to go to that model, I already had a nice wheelset, carbon cranks, nice brakes, spare cassette, so decided to buy the NX build with the intentions of upgrading it. #bikingroots, #transitionbikes #transitionspur
    So before I even rode it stock, wheelset came off, brakes came off, crankset, cassette, chain, shifter, grips, I think that was it. Since this video I also changed out the bars to some oneup carbon bars and an industry nine stem.
    Shave about 2lbs off the bike which wasn't too bad. It would have been nice to get it a little lighter but without spending a lot on lighter carbon wheels, suspension, and cassette, this will be fine for now.
    My first ride on the Spur was awesome! Riding a bike roughly 5lbs lighter than what you've been used to does make a difference. In addition the way that it puts the power down and its overall efficiency makes a big difference on our flat Houston trails.
    While it felt light and fast, I felt like I could jump it (as much as I jump which isn't much) without fear of the frame breaking. I did bottom out once on one of the drops so I'll need to add some PSI to my rear shock before I ride here again but other than that, no complaints and can't wait to ride it again soon!

    The Spur is a fantastic bike, I live in the UK and have had mine for a year and a half now in the original powder black that I still think is my favourite colour. It was custom built with SID Ultimates, Shimano XT, Hope brakes, One up dropper and bars and some Hunt carbon wheels. Weight is just under 27lbs. The bike has been ideal for my riding that is pretty varied from rocky loose terrain to smoother trails. What I love about it is that it is so versatile it really is the one do it all the bike I was after replacing my longer travel Orange five and a Whyte hardtail. I would say it’s easily the best mountain bike I have ever owned. Fast, capable and comfortable to ride. I have just returned from a two week riding holiday in the Yorkshire Dales and it was brilliant. My only gripe with bike is the paint is pretty thin and is easily damaged so definitely have some protection on it and just be careful when not riding it.

    Did the exact same thing. Ordered the closeout nx and immediately replaced everything except brakes and shock which so far are working fine. Cycle light carbon hoops with berds and onyx, x01 axs derailleur, 1295 10-52 cassette, oval ring, x01 carbon 165 cranks, one up carbon bar, fox 34 factory grip2 reduced to 120mm from 130(prefer120 after 2 months on 130). I have a 13 yeti sb140 LR, orbea rallon and the spur gets ridden the most, everywhere. Put a forekaster up front, dissector rear. Dissector front is terrifying.

      On my harbor freight hanging scale(questionable) it's right at 27.6 lbs. Live in Austin and mostly ride 4 corners area. So super rocky, technical with lots of ledges and loose, steep climbs. I'm sure in less rocky or loose places it would work fine up front but here the transition to side knobs is too unpredictable and honestly doesn't hold. Back is a better place for it (imo) in this types of terrain. Forekaster is an excellent front tire. Just look at the placement of knobs between the two, it should be obvious.

    Building up a Spur XL Carbon as we speak. X01 cranks X01 cassette xx1 AXS derailleur and Xx1 black chain. Roval traverse SL wheelset with Vittoria Barzo 29x2.6 out front and Vittoria Mezcal 29x 2.35 out back. Sid ultimate up front Sid lux rear. Axs 170.dropper. Burgtec stem. Evil boomstick carbon bars. PNW XL loam grips. Sram code stealth silver 4 pots with hs2 Rotors. Look x trac enrage plus gold pedals. Should have it out on the trail in the morning. Been riding top fuel for.the past month. I'll check in with a comparison soon. Nice video

    Very nice build, although not as light as I would have expected. Bikes are definitely heavier these days. I have a YT Izzo Core 3 which was just over 29 lbs stock. I only changed the wheels to Elite Wheels Pro36 (1540g) and went tubeless and the bike dropped to 27.5 lbs (without pedals). Not XC light, but certainly efficient and great climber. I am sure yours feels great climbing too. 👍

      Thanks for the comment. Oh nice, haven't ridden one of those but am intrigued. Oh wow, not familiar with the elite wheels but that is a very lightweight. My wheels are not lightweight at like almost 1800g I think so I could shed more weight with lighter wheels but I like how they feel and already had them so staying with them for now.       I have the Elitewheels pro 36 on my Stumpjumper Expert here in Switzerland and love them.
      Bike is now 26.4 lbs with flat pedals 🙂

      Thanks, yep it is pretty. Yeah, thankfully bikes are pretty modular these days so with a few exceptions, you can build and try different parts and go back and forth. In the end, most bike manufacturers are just frame builders and they all use similar parts for their bikes

    Sweet ride! My spur was a beast. If you upgrade that rear shock, I'd highly recommend the Ohlins TTX2. HOLY SMOKE that was a good upgrade. I also ran a 130 pike with a hc97 damper upgrade. That was a fun bike. You will enjoy your time on it!

    First run Spur owner here with the SID, XO1 build. To tackle the steep, rocky, rooty trails here in the PNW, I made a few changes. Upgraded to Code RSC brakes, 180mm rear rotor, 35 degree rise bars, and DHR II tires front and back. I dont care about weight and needed to beef it up a bit. I have many miles on this setup and over the past year I've been riding this over my Sentinel. Enjoy!

    Coincidence, I ride the same bike all the time at Cypress Creek and haven’t seen you around.
    I really like my Spur, I converted everything g to Shimano SLX

    what does the bike weight now?

      Right around 28 I believe so shave off about 2 lbs. My carbon wheels aren’t the lightest (they are more trail oriented than XC). My fork as well is on the heavier side compared to some lighter forks but for me it feels great! So much lighter and faster than the enduro bikes I’ve been riding and used to over the last 5 years

    Why not just buy the frame and put on what you want? Buying a new bike and taking off a lot of parts makes zero sense.

      So many reasons. Color, deals, sometimes you get it then Just decide after a few rides you want or find better components. My main problem is always framesets don't come in the same colors as the built ones.

      @@CJGrand1 it's not my post. I was just commenting on why I've done the same thing with a new bike. When you start getting into having multiple bikes. Parts just end up on different builds. It's fun if you like to tinker and turn wrench. If you look a lot of times a full bike is only a few hundred more then a frameset and you get more parts! 😉

      Yes, normally I would agree with you and do a frame up build with my parts on it which I've done many times in the past. This time was a bit different. 1) they no longer sold the old frame and color by itself, only the new one and the price for me to buy it even at dealer price was less than a complete NX build 2) Even at my cost, suspension isn't cheap, so I was probably going to spend $500 or so for a fork, the NX build had a Fox 34 (rhythm) but still fine with grip damper. 3) If I didn't use the wheelset or brakes (which is why I didn't even ride it stock) I could sell the wheelset, brakes, crankset, cassette as "new-take off" and often do to customers in my shop that busted a wheel, want new brakes, cranks, etc. The parts go into my supply to use on another build or re-sell to those that need it and want to save money over new. 3) I'm doing my own labor or having my guys do it if they are bored so I have all the resources and tools to do it quick and easy and it is fun for me. That being said, yes I know it doesn't make a lot of sense but for me this time it did! Take care
