thank you for this post.....i remember some of the things from some of my days studying psychology.....for example, you are right that we do form a lot of our identity during the developmental years of our life and the foundation is kinda strong and maybe difficult to change one you get older as well. i guess what you are doing is also very good for the Tongan community who are also living abroad and away from the actual Tonga Islands and who are facing different challenges that their parents and their parents parents are facing as well which may add to the total burden of also trying to make ends meet as well. thank you.
Malo 'aupito for sharing!
Thank you for sharing. You commented on a lot of good things e.g. how we should Trust in the Lord Jehovah who sees the bigger picture. and also that we should be humble and also "surrender" to the lord things such as anger and dissapointment etc. if things are not going our way which is a very good example towards the children who will see this and also behave accordingly, and will give them the right choices to choose later on in their lives because in life there are always bad times and hiccups, and we should also teach our children to not make things worse by choosing choices out of a bad "condition" e.g. do n ot be fakalotoloto and manumanu etc. I think i may just be able to comment lightly on this seeing as how I am not married. I think you should also keep going within yourself too because I have read that Marriage is always difficult for all who get married, and i think you posting these things is a good and healthy way for you to let off some steam AND, you are doing it very well....i.e. good fakaapaapa, though, it is a bit unusual for a Tongan woman to talk about such things,,,,,but its still good. lol i hope this helps

okay, i know you didn't ask me to,,but i'll give you some feedback....okay, so i understand where you are comming from. I think you were trying to also explain that some of the youths experience "learned helplessness" and that their exploring behaviours, e.g. when they are learning more about the environment that they are in especially during the developmental years can become "extinguished" and associated with shame hence why they give up trying. Hmmmm........I think the Tongan way is excellent in some ways....for example, in the Bible you can read "spoil the rod, ruin the child" which is part of the original Tongan culture.....but you are also right i.e. when it is associated with shame instead of "learning the proper lesson". my dad is old school in many ways and one thing i notice is that alot of Tongan parents will "show" their love for their children in different ways, but they won't "tell you" they love you as often as a NZ father would....which both are fine, but i can see how confusing it can be for a Tongan growing up in two dominant cultures. I also read in a journal article that it is a Tongan thing for someone to possibly experience something, and then they would turn to their friends or loved ones, for example, to have them approve or disapprove the thing that they learnt........i.e. we sometimes needs emotional reassurance from other fellow Tongans which is a very Tongan thing and instead of being independent etc. and not conforming to the proper standards. i don't know....i hope this helps
