Am curious... When you're using the Focus Stack @ 10:10... Do you not need a tripod because of the high Shutter Speed? - Otherwise it must be a challenge trying to stack in post otherwise?
Hi mate, Photoshop aligns the images making a tripod unnecessary, obviously it would be better on a tripod as you wouldn’t lose any of the image to cropping, however for this experiment I wanted to see how it held up doing hand held stacks.
@@keithguppy Did you lose much via. this experiment?
Have loved my Mirrorless Camera (Canon RP) since I upgraded from my Canon 1100D a couple of years ago... Have you taken a look at the Canon Test Drive Programme where you can hire a Camera or Lenses for 48-hours...? - You pay a deposit, but then you get that back, provided the equipment is in good condition when its returned to them Its how I ended up deciding on the Canon RP in the end, as was able to try it out, before buying
I did look at the test drive program, however not knowing anyone that has used it I wasn’t sure about using it, I know it’s not actually cannon but another company, I imagine they would take the deposit for the stupidest reason.
@@keithguppy Yeah its definitely a third party... both times I've used them it was closer to the end of the pandemic, and because they weren't sure if they would get the Equipment out to me on the agreed date, they sent it to me a few days early, so I got to use it for more than 48-hours for no extra cost... Whether that's still the case, or whether I got lucky I'm not sure, as has been a few years now. The Gear itself came in proper cases as well, protected by Memory Foam, so when I wasn't using it it was stored safely away lol!... Was definitely a case of using it like a new-born baby to avoid having to lose the deposit, but never had that issue... I do eventually plan on doing a video around it later in the year. Can imagine people have had horror stories though, as guess that 3rd party can differ as to where you're based in the country... e.g. Equipment you hire, probably wont come from the same place that I get it from.
@neilstevensphotography good to know. My previous experience with canon repair service was awful so I’m a little dubious about using third party companies. Maybe I just got unlucky
Great one Keith. I’ve always shot mirrorless and I have no complaints with the results and experience. I think the biggest factor for choosing which to get is the feel and experience of using the camera. Makes you shoot more!
Thanks Keith. The advantage of staying with canon for me is I love the camera body’s and the menus, so it would be like getting a makeover for my camera, same camera different insides lol.
Hi mate. Hope your well. Nice video with loads off info as always. When i upgraded last year. Was not sure to go mirror less or not. But I decided to stay with a DSLR, really enjoy my Cannon 90D, has load off great features on it. But I do know I going to at some point go mirror less. Take care mate. Shawn
Hi Shawn, hope you okay mate. I am in two minds about it, I want to upgrade because of the new features, but at the same time I do love my 5d mk4 , it still produces some great images. One day mate I will take the plunge into the mirrorless world.
Hi Keith hope you're well. Great video, nice bit of kit that canon, I love my little canon eos m50 although it's only an entry level camera definitely mirrorless is the future of photography as it opens up more possibilities . I'd like to upgrade my D810 to something like the Z7 or Z8 but it's a big cash outlay, and the image quality probably won't be much better, although I'd get many more features. Unfortunately Nikon seem to be quite a bit behind with the video features of their line of mirrorless cameras. I paid £60 for a spare battery for my D810 and I thought that was steep, the price of the battery and memory card for the R3 is rather eye watering. Would you replace your lenses with R series lenses or use an adapter. Best wishes stay safe Jon and Karen
Hi Jon, hope you are both well. I agree, mirrorless is definitely the future, and I feel the same, my 5d still produces some great images but lacks features of the new mirrorless cameras. I would keep all my lenses and use an adaptor mainly because I can’t afford to replace them lol.
Fun video Keith, good luck and enjoy whichever camera you get. Be well.
Thanks Enrique, thought I would have fun with this one
Another great video Keith, and informative Good work :-)
Thank you 🙏🏼 I don’t to technical reviews so I thought I would throw a little fun into this one

Hi Dear, Your video content is really good. but views and subscribers are much lower. To increase subscribers and views, you need to do channel SEO meaning your videos are not fully SEO. SEO is not friendly to your title. The SEO score is very low. The main reason why videos go viral is because of video SEO and organic promotion. If you do SEO and promotion then lots of views and subscribers will come to your channel and you will be able to monetize your channel in a few days. I can help you. If you went.
Thanks for commenting
It's a mistake to shoot with the right light? Glad you told me - now I know to look for the wrong light, thanks!
I need to reshoot this, I’ll be sure to take this into account when I do, thanks for commenting
@@keithguppy It would've been wrong for me not to do the right thing. Best2u!
Absolutely, it’s good to learn from mistakes, and people pointing them out helps me grow as a creator 😀
Hi Keith. Great images mate. Something I need to practice. Need to get out into my garden and practice practice. Just showed my wife your images and she thinks they look cool. Being out in the field doing macro is so difficult. Take care mate. Shawn
Hi Shawn, thanks mate. Practice is key, many thanks to your wife mate.
Hi Mate, cracking damsel fly, well done...Looks so difficult using that magnification ....Colin.
Cheers mate, if I remember it I’ll bring it on Tuesday and you can have a go.
Great video 👍
Thanks Joe
Hi Keith hope you're well. Great video and images, definitely agree the last image was brilliant. The flashgun certainly works well although I did notice it didn't seem to fire on every shot. Best wishes stay safe Jon and Karen
Hi Jon, hope you are both well , yeah i noticed this too. It’s not the best one I have to be honest. I have a few others. I may do a comparison for macro one day.
One thousand subscribers, this is when you start making the big money. Nice to see you Keith, very good macro tips. Be well and stay safe.
Thanks Enrique, Ha I wish Enrique, I don’t think I will make money from UA-cam for a long time. Maybe from sponsorship.
@@keithguppy That’s an easy one Keith, you shoot with Canon, just call Tokyo and tell them that you want to be a Canon ambassador.
@@Enrique-the-photographer I think they would want someone a little better than me lol. 😂
Hi Keith, love that woods...well done mate. the 1K looks good as well, keep it going. Guess the midges think your tasty....And are you sure that was thunder ⚡ or have you eaten a ruby...😂 😂

Congrats with the 1k buddy. The epic b-roll evolved with exciting commentary! 🤣 awesome stuff and fun facts.
Cheers mate, finally got into that 8% club 😃 AI wrote the script and I thought it sounded mysterious so narrated that way 😂

Thanks Enrique 😄
Hi Keith. Great video mate. Love the location shame you can’t get into the woods themselves. Cool set off images to. Take care mate. Shawn
Hi Shawn, thanks mate, yeah you used to be able to go in but too many people took advantage and ruined it over Covid I believe
Hi Keith hope your well. Enjoyed the epic B roll and the fun facts. Great video and photos can't choose a favourite as they're all my favourites. If that were me out in the thunderstorm i'd have stayed out, as I love a good thunderstorm, got caught out in many in my days as a fisherman. Best wishes stay safe Jon & Karen
Hi Jon, hope you are both well. I do love B-roll lol I would have stayed except I wasn’t dressed for it and I didn’t want to get caught out, I love thunder and lightning, we do t have a lot of it down this way sadly.
Well done Keith, great shot of the wood lice mate👌
Cheers mate 👍🏻
That was a cool video Keith, looks very challenging indeed, especially without any flash. Hard to nail focus, but looks like great results when done right. Enjoyed this one!
Thanks Keith, I enjoyed shooting this one. It’s crazy how different things look that close up.
Hi mate, yea extremely difficult task....very shallow DOF agree a flash would help a great effort. well done. Colin...
Thanks mate.
Hi Keith, love the image mate. Great video as always. I really need to practice my macro, great tips too. Take care mate. Shawn
Thanks Shawn, this was fun shooting this one. Macro is definitely fun.
Hi Keith hope you're well.Great video as always, considering you were hand holding without flash the images were mostly in focus, also as you mentioned the lens might be a bit soft. Never worry about the camera brand, it's the person tripping the shutter that important. I have 2 canon's (1 is a compact) 2 Nikons 1 Pentax I've also owned a fujifilm camera and and olympus in the past, and they were only ever as good as my ability. Great set of photos interesting to see what the small creatures look like close up and personal. Best wishes stay safe Jon and Karen
Hi Jon, hope you are both well. I can confirm the lens is sharp, in an upcoming video I put it on a tripod and get sharp photos. I agree there are a lot of variables, like how steady you’re holding the camera, how hard you press the shutter. It’s cool to see everything up close. I haven’t really played enough with it though.
@@keithguppy looking forward to watching the follow up video 📹
Very enjoyable to watch .thankyou
Thanks Julian much appreciated 🙏🏼
Interesting video Keith. I recently got the Laowa 65mm macro but I find it really difficult (frustrating) to shoot handheld, even at 1:1 (much less at 2:1), it’s probably (it is) my technique because when I use it on a small tripod for tabletop “stuff” I can tell that the lens nails focus and it is very sharp. Be well and stay safe.
Hi Enrique, I have been looking at getting the 65mm laowa myself. Have you tried it with the flash? You can get better results but still quite hard. I have another video coming up where I use it with the flash too and I still struggle
@@keithguppy Not with a flash, the shot of the serrated knife on Instagram was shot with constant light.
@@Enrique-the-photographer ah, okay, I guess if it’s not moving you don’t really need the flash. I use constant light a lot. Easier to see the results straight away
@@keithguppy I did try with a small flash mounted on the hot shoe but it was casting a shadow on the image (I was too close to the subject), I will try something tabletop with off camera flash.
I've been doing macro for years and never thought of using magnification glasses. Brilliant idea!
Thanks for the comment. Yeah I find them very helpful, you do have to get closer to see anything but I definitely see things I wouldn’t ordinarily see
It's number three for me.
Awesome thank you 🤩
It's number three for me.

what the heck did you do to that beautiful lens ?!
I was photographing something at home and dropped It, I was devastated when it hit the floor! Luckily it’s quiet robust and still works perfectly 🙂
Nice idea Keith and some great locations to do it 👌👍
Cheers mate, I’m not looking forward to the bluebell tree. If I miss that it looks awful
Why not all 4? Just a thought.
Hi Craig, yes I like that. The choice is for the video that will go up every season. I might pop all the photos up at the end of the year.
@@keithguppy that's easy. Focus each video on a different location, but share the photos you got from the other locations for that season. Either way, definitely share all at the end. You really have my brain turning if I want to attempt anything similar to this. Thanks.
@@craigpiferphotography that’s a great idea, thanks for the idea. You should go for it, it can’t hurt and it’s more content for your channel
My choice of location would be 3
Great thanks for commenting Peter. Great choice, It’s looking like that will be the one.
Great concepts for a video to make, Keith. Something to try one day. 😁 1 or 3 for me. The compositions were most interesting and their interaction with the seasons.
You would get some great seasonal shots too Keith, that would be an intriguing watch. Thanks for the vote, it’s looking like no3 will be the one at the moment.

Thanks for the mention mate... Definitely a video series well worth doing over the year... Great way to introduce it either; No.1 and No.3 are my favourite spots
Thanks mate, I though it was a good way of getting an extra video out of it 🤣 I’m leaning toward no1 although it’s about an hour from me, no 2 are relatively close and 3 is about 40 mins from me. You always have to travel to the best spots lol

Hi Keith. Hope you’re ok mate. Thanks for the mention. Looking back I think I could off found a better location to do my season video. I really like location 2 and 3. But really think 3 with the different season would look really nice. Great video. Take care Shawn.
Hi Shawn, you can always do a round 2 mate. nothing wrong with reshooting content if you think you can do it better, so the first vote for No3 then, cheers mate.
Full respect to you Keith. Really down to earth & honest chat giving an insight to difficulties that others wouldn’t understand. Your doing great & the main thing as you said, is enjoying what you do mate. My say it as it is doesn’t win me any prizes, but I don’t mind that as I’d sooner be straight talking & my videos are planned around the location with no script other than that , plus the topic we mull over and ad-lib as we go. Keep up the good work mate & let me know if you ever do get up to North Wales 👌👍
Thanks Mark, the best way is as-lib I think, more natural and you know it’s coming from a place of honesty. I will definitely let you know mate, we could do a collaboration.
Keith, a personal congratulations on getting close to a personal goal of views and subscribers. Also, I am sure talking about how you go about your thought processes was a good idea. As for me, I am one who would rather be behind the camera than in front. So, in some ways, you are helping me and others push themselves forward Thank you.
Thanks Jeff, you just have to get out there for every one to judge and then forget about it 😂
Love it. Sometimes I feel that I don't do as much b-roll as I should, and other times I think I do too much. Those two way trips definitely get our steps in for us.
Yeha B-roll is a hard one, sometimes i just appear on location others im doing a 5 minute b-roll segment lol, I know what you mean mate.
Keith, congrats on almost hitting 1K, I'm sure you'll cross that number very soon. I'm much like you, I just blabber on. Keep thinking I need to script my videos, and I do somewhat, in my head, but sometimes I don't even know what I'm doing beforehand. Keep doing it your way.
Thanks Craig, at the end of the day, we are still producing good content no matter how we film it , it's the final product that matters, no matter how long it takes up lol
Really good honest video mate... I agree with how you edit your videos, I try and do that "pro" approach myself at times, where I can just edit bits in... But more often than not, I'll just record a whole section in one go, if I make a mistake I'll restart from the beginning.
Thankfully I don't seem to be the only one who self edits, I thought I was just doing it wrong, maybe this is the way to do it lol
Hi Keith. Thanks for sharing. I can totally get what you’re saying. I self edit as well. If I make a mistake half way through. I take a pause they say take 2 then start again. Sometimes it’s take 7 or 8 lol. I just enjoy getting out (which I not done in a few weeks) and making video and yes like you I do think more about my photos now then I did a few. years ago. Again thanks for the share and keep well mate. Shawn.
Hi Shawn, It is fun self editing, the amount of outtakes we must generate lol.
Hi Keith hope you're well, we definitely cover some ground as photographers/videographers all whilst carrying a heavy photo backpack. Best wishes stay safe Jon and Karen
Hi Jon, hope you are both well, I think my backpack is around 15kg too, I have done 10k hikes with that thing on 😂 it keeps you fit I guess.
Haha this was a great compilation. We definitely go through long distances for our outdoor shoots 😂
Indeed we do Keith. Although I think you probably win the gold medal for all those mountain hikes you go on to get those shots. And if you count travel miles you definitely win lol.
