The Distagon 35/1.4 ZM is since 2006 is the best, more microcontrast, no onion rings like the FLE 'lux, no Leica glow. I could use hopefully the G Planar 35/2 soon... which suits my needs.Yes, i case you noticed - Zeiss Fan since 89 here...and Zeiss was often better then it's Leica counterparts, starting right with the Contax I into 1932...often sharper, faster & better, also cheaper. Love that "Zeissiness" look, it's 3D Pop, microcontrast & rendition, tonality typical for Zeiss lenses.🙂

Interesting. I like to see new manufacturers approaching rangefinder lens design with intention. If I'm honest, I feel a little like I'm watching an infomercial? But I support you working with Leica-minded manufacturers!

Thanks for this overview. Finally a Chinese manufacturer who gets branding right!! They put in the effort to build a brand name that works internationally across languages and cultures.
I will be pre-ordering their 28mm, if it's anything like you describe the 35mm, it's going to be a very good value proposition at that price point.

Quite interesting lens but why would I declick on a “vintage” lens? Seems odd to me. Don’t need that on a M lens. Also at this size I hope it’s focusing internally. Appreciate the fact though more M-Mount lenses are coming out.

Really good review, man, thank you for this!
I find it incredible that they managed to do floating elements, it's quite challenging. I think that's one of the secrets to 3d pop. I see it here and this is coming from someone that shoots the Distagon ZM 35/1.4 all the time, there's no better 3d pop than that.
Have you had the chance to check out the black finish? I wonder how they compare.

The 28mm f1.4 is the one I’m most interested in, given there’s really only the TT Artisans one that isn’t like $12k CAD, and it doesn’t really perform at f1.4

Thypoch's strategy seems suspicious to me. Only two reviews of the 35mm lens. Both are rather flattering, but it's not enough to form a sufficient opinion. Big promises for the 28mm lens, but so far, ridiculously few test photos at this focal length (most at high apertures, no close focusing tests). Zero reviews 28...
I would really like both lenses to be decent and worth the money spent, but due to the way Thypoch currently works, I have great doubts.

I briefly mentioned it in the video, the Simera is sharper up close, it doesn’t have a midzone dip. Bokeh is good on both, I like them equally for their character. From what I can see the Simera has less fringing and less vignetting as well.

Did you address finder blockage? You probably did, but I must have missed it. Less than the zeiss 1.4? More than an asph. Cron? Looks kinda like it’s a fat lens. Would you recommend an OVF for those who like an uninterrupted view? Off topic, but I just picked up a Ricoh 40mm OVF to use with my VT 40mm f2.8 color skopar, and I highly recommend these tiny viewfinders(they have a 28mm too that I am hoping I can find used, as I did with this one). They are about 1/3 the size of the modern leica ovf’s, super bright, and they do leave a bit of room around the frame so it really feels like the M finder. I doubt you use viewfinders, but maybe you know someone who does and there are not many in-depth reviews of them here, or anywhere. One last thing, great job, as always, and thanks.

I have the same feeling too. It is just about the flare control is way different from the FLE, giving it has a dramatic feel than the FLE.

  • @DanielKennedyaeos
    @DanielKennedyaeos Рік тому

I have the 35 1.5 nokton asph and it has no glowy look. I'm confused by your comparisons to that lens. In fact I add a 1/4 mist filter to add the glow. Perhaps your review sample was out of calibration? I had to shim mine for accurate focus but if focused using live view it was very sharp.
Are you coding this lens or applying lens corrections in post? Vignette looks well-controlled but fringing looks a bit better than my Nokton but worse than the FLE or Distagon.
Love the 14 rounded blades on this lens though. more interested in the 28.

I’ve tested it on the Z8. Both the 28 and 35, both are sharp edge to edge at infinity at f1.4.
By the way the APO Lanthars are FLE designs.
These guys also make cinelenses under a different brand name that are highly regarded, hence the very nice touch of the clickless aperture.

Seems like a promising product that will offer more choices for a segment of rangefinder users; competition is good. I think the whole aspirational approach to naming the brand is kind of, well, aspirational on Typoch's part. At the end of the day the Leica brand will remain the pinnacle of desirability. Not because Leica is the best (Voigtlander has already proven that) but because of Leica heritage and exclusivity. The Leica approach to branding should be a required course at every business school. Price your product beyond the reach of 85% of buyers and sell a lot. Price it beyond 95% and create a two year wait list, and a used market in which a customer will pay 2x for the product, used, in 10 years...
