I have owned this lens for over 2 decades. While I own quite a few lenses, including other Wetzlar offerings, this is one of my absolute favorites. Never shot it digitally, only analog and B&W; permanently mounted on a Minolta CLE. To this day, it still produces prints of wonderful quality. Enjoyed the video.
Glad to hear that you’re making good use of it! As far as size and performance are concerned, there’s little more to be desired. Thanks for the comment!
I'm so pleased to read all of the positive reviews of this lens. I have just ordered an "excellent +" copy to use with my M2 and M10. Thank you for a really informative video Andrew, and I look forward to trying out my 'new' lens!
One of my absolute favorites. Had it for over 10 years and it’s the ONLY Leica M lens that I will not let go of. It just gets out of the way and delivers results at f4 that’s above and beyond.
Can confirm that this lens is dope, even on the M11! Definitely a fair amount of the vintage glow wide open, but it’s sharp and reasonable contrasts in the center. F/2.8 gets a huge bump in contrast. Stop it down, and you’ve got an amazing landscape lens that’s sharp corner to corner. Couldn’t agree more with your take that’s a 2-in-1 sort of lens.
Happy to hear that it lives on with the M11! It’s one of those lenses that you don’t mind carrying around all day long. I’m a big fan of it’s ability to tone down the funk as you stop down. It’s as if it’s a f2.8 lens that can shoot at f2.
Not many people can pull off the long chat to camera … but you nailed it! Excellent knowledge/perspective from an enthusiastic, skilled, working photographer and lots of examples of real images.
I took this lens on a Memphis trip when I first got it and took some of my favorite film photos. Wonderful lens, not perfect but loads of character and like you said 3D pop wide open at f/2 to f/2.8
Great video on the many pluses and few minuses of this lens. I have the M-Rokkor Japanese version and it was the first rangefinder lens I had for my M2.
Hi Andrew, thanks for one more great review ! I really believe you are one of the best "Leica" voice on UA-cam at the moment 🙂👍 Do you have any thought / feedback to share comparing the 40 summicron versus the voigtlander 40 2.8 Heliar that i believed you reviewed later ? Which one would you choose for an "every day lens" ? Many thanks and all the best !
I picked up the Voigtlander 40mm f1.4 for my M3. The 40mm is great. I don't know how the Voigtlander compares with the Leica but I would not hesitate on a 40mm.
I just picked up the Voigtlander 40 f2.8 and am eager to see how it compares with this Summicron, which I’ve owned quite a while. Would love to hear your thoughts, as you’ve recently shot both. Thanks for 2 excellent reviews!
Hi, I am actually interested in knowing what would be a comparison between the 2 lenses. If you did try both, may I ask what were your observations / thoughts ? Many thanks !
@@GenericPhotographer: well this video has encouraged me to try it more often on my Leica M9 and maybe even MP. glad to see it is being recognized more but hopefully prices don't surge on the summicron 40mm.
Nice review 👍 Shame you didn't have the fold out rubber hood, its quite a neat design. I'd love to see what you think of the Zeiss Sonnar 40mm f2.8 HFT. That's definitely my favourite 40mm RF lens.
Just found your channel. Cheers from Northern Canada. With your Leica SL2s do you need an adaptor if you wanted to use Voigtlander lenses? I currently have a A74 with a maybe shutter count but I always keep wanting a leica.....lol.
What is interesting with this lens is its 70's rendering. I have a 35 last version cron, a last version 35 summilux FLE2, A 35 summilux pre ash titan, and others and it is this one wich is stuck to my M11! ultra tiny, light, sharp, and beautiful colours and bokeh! Best
not sure i would call >600€ a budget lens, but maybe the prices have just rocketed since this video was posted. It‘s insane how the Leica CL now costs as much as the m4‘s i find.. And the m5, the so called cheapest alternative, now reaches crazy prices, probably because people looked for it because it was „cheap“.. The world is crazy 😅
I for one love ovf cameras. especially large VF’s from old slrs. But yes Leica should make a Q size camera in an interchangable mount. But chances are they won’t cause it’ll eat into their SL system sales.
Why on earth all the geeks out there knows how to spell LEICA correctly but when it comes to NIKON they fail miserably? Wtf its not NAIKON ITS BLOODY NÏKON NÏKON NÏKON

You will love this lens.
Perfect match with the 24 MP of the M10!
Best of both worlds.
Enjoy!
Great review and wonderful photos. I use this lens on a Minolta CLE and plan to use it even more there on film and on the SL and CL/TL2 on digital.
I have this lens and I am very happy with it - is practically "glued" to my M6
I can see why! Enjoy

Intriguing new presentation style!
Thanks!

Not a bad starter lens at all!
Just got this lens today and enjoying it
ha no way, great choice!

Thanks, had a few opportunities to own this lens, but missed every time. Guess I'm gonna stick to my 35 Cron as a compact go to lens
The 40mm cron sits on my M5 as my daily shooter. Sure, my shelf has MPs with Luxs...but this 40 is like having 2 lenses in one (35 & 50). Cheers!
An important practical feature (for me) is the depth-of-field scale on the lens.

use the 40mm summicron on a Minolta CLE mostly but occasionally on my M9.
The CLE + 40 Combo seems super compelling. Cheers!
@@GenericPhotographer: well this video has encouraged me to try it more often on my Leica M9 and maybe even MP. glad to see it is being recognized more but hopefully prices don't surge on the summicron 40mm.
@@cggg490 Here's hoping they stay affordable, enjoy the lens! Happy shooting!
Thanks! What you’d recommend? This or the heliar 2.8? Thanks
This, mostly because it will appreciate in value and if you don’t like it you can sell it for the same amount you paid and get the heliar.

Yeah those hoods are getting more and more uncommon as the rubber dries out. If I come across one I’ll make sure to try it out!
Do you mean the Rollei 40mm HFT 2.8?
@@talleyrand9442 Yes I do 👍

The hood is awful on the lens and useless....🙂

I have been interested in this for my M3 and just use the whole viewfinder.
Great review! Thanks for that.
I’m wondering, once coupled with digital M body, how reliable is the manual focus using the rangefinder
All shots were taken with my M10. Can confidently say it’s quite reliable
Mine is out of focus but easy to learn how correct it, needs CLA, old & raged lens but I love it
I filed mine to bring up the 35 lines. Crazy maybe but definitely works nicely- just say’n.
This TING BANGS
Great things come in small packages 🤓
@@GenericPhotographer quoting Emma i see
Great video. Do you know if it works on a SL2 with m adapter?
Thanks! It sure does, worked fine on my Sony bodies too.
It does, but like all Summicron-C lenses, there is no 40mm lens profile you can select for it. So your metadata will be off.
@@paigelaw5799 ofc, I shot it with no profile with no problems. It’s not prone to any major shifts or casts on Leica sensors.
I was going to buy a black mist 1/8 filter for this on my Sony but it seems it already has that hazy glow and low contrast feel haha
Yeah you don’t really need any more haze haha
Did you buy that CL on Kijiji in Montreal?
How I wish that Leica would make a modern version with better coating and metal rings. Not even asph needed, wonderful lens tiny and very powerful
What is interesting with this lens is its 70's rendering.

Similar -a bit inferior maybe- to the overlooked 35 Summicron 6 elements, gorgeous lens
what's up with the hoarder house
Was at an estate sale, the place was packed
I do not like OVF Cameras ! Leica should make a Q-M Camera with EVF and Leica M-mount, it is year 2022 !!!
I for one love ovf cameras. especially large VF’s from old slrs. But yes Leica should make a Q size camera in an interchangable mount. But chances are they won’t cause it’ll eat into their SL system sales.
But get the Minolta CLE Camera, it is a better Camera than Leica CL !!!
Unless you prefer mechanical shutters that is 😄
