The End of an Empire: The First Russian Republic Explained
Between the Soviet Union and the Russian Empire, there was a short-lived republic. Though often forgotten by history, it was the failure of this republic that allowed the Bolsheviks to take power in Russia, changing the course of the 20th century. In this video I explore how the republic came to rise out of the ashes of the Russian Empire, and how it so quickly fell to a group that had operated on the fringes of Russian society up to that moment.

Austria-Hungary's Weird Flag Problem
Переглядів 4,6 тис.8 місяців тому
The flag that everyone uses for Austria-Hungary isn't Austria-Hungary's real flag because Austria-Hungary didn't have a real flag. They both had flags they liked and they didn't like one another very much. The flag most people use was a flag used on merchant vessels, which is the closest they got to an imperial flag. There, you don't even have to watch the video anymore

Did the narrator mis-speak? "In 1920, a single German Mark (the Papiermark) was worth 65 USD; In November 1923, it was with 44.2 Billion." Shouldn't that be the other way around? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

hearing historical people describing Berlin in between wars as rich reminds me of current year Moscow - it is a modern rich city, but I wouldn't judge the whole country based on capital.

The ending of this video is quite telling. Socialism can fail over and over again, kill millions and make many more destitute and some will still defend it, why can't you see the pattern? Socialism inexorably turns into a dictatorship. Maybe I'm crazy for believing we could ever do anything else, maybe the idiocy is within us. Don't get it yet? just listen to the ending again and have a look at my rephrase: "If only the US would have kept footing the bill, the democratic Weimar republic would have done well" Can you see the problem there?

minute 8:28. "in 1920 a single German mark was worth 65 US dollars; in 1923 "it" was worth 44.2 "billion" -- text seems to be incorrect and mixes up marks and dollars.

This video is fantastic. You touch on a point that often goes underappreciated about the Russian Revolution: even at the height of instability at the end of the Czarist era, the Bolsheviks were still a fringe sect of unpopular radicals who weren't taken seriously by any of the prominent cultural or political factions at the time. How they ended up in power is a series of accidents that would be comical if it didn't end in so much suffering. Thank you for doing what you do. The videos you make are well researched and well presented and I hope you keep making more!

Watch Ka-Da-We: Our Time Is Now. That was set from 1918 to the start of the Second World War. It was centred around a Jewish owned upmarket department store. The owner's son gave it away to his non Jewish best friend once Jews weren't allowed to own businesses, and then he fled to the USA.

3:11 Ironically, it allowed for export taxes if two thirds voted for them, while export taxes are explicitly prohibited by the U.S. Constitution specifically because southerners didn’t want them at the time. Tariffs were also said to be for revenue only and not for protectionism.

Useless, impossible to watch. The fast boring reading, awfully monotonous voice, mumbling... makes it impossible to follow or understand the narrative without constant rewinding. Colossal waste of time. I forced myself to see it through to the end - but could not remember any of it. That is how absolutely BORING it was.... I feel exhausted... Never again. I've now blocked this channel.
