  • Between Napoleon's famous conquests in Europe, and his dramatic return at Waterloo, he was the Emperor of a small island in the Mediterranean. Initially awarded to him as little more than a bribe to keep their defeated enemy happy, Napoleon insisted on making the island his own

As a 60 yrs old Italian this is new to me. In our school textbooks they always mention that Napoleon was 'exiled' to the isle of Elba where he briefly resided before trying his fate again. They never explain that the island was given to him as his own indipendent principality so I always assumed it was part of the granduchy of Tuscany and that the former emperor was living there under strict guard, but it didn't make sense with the fact that he was able to gather enough supporters to escape, organize a new army and go to war again against the big powers of the time. I always wondered why they hadn't exiled him to St. Helen from the start. This video clarified it for me,so thank you.
Still it's sort of unfathomable the kind of respect, honourability and charisma he enjoyed among different strata of European society, so much that even his arch-enemies wouldn't dare to end his life (at least in an obvious way) and after his death many poets and artists still paid homage to him.
