Austria-Hungary's Weird Flag Problem

  • The flag that everyone uses for Austria-Hungary isn't Austria-Hungary's real flag because Austria-Hungary didn't have a real flag. They both had flags they liked and they didn't like one another very much. The flag most people use was a flag used on merchant vessels, which is the closest they got to an imperial flag. There, you don't even have to watch the video anymore

Except the Hungarians didn’t want to play ball could be used to describe pretty much the entire history of the Astro Hungarian empire’s existence

And also in the Austrian side, most people would also see the flag of their crownland next to the Austriannflag, as the Austrian side was a federation made up of a lot of autonomous lands that could make their own laws.

I'm Hungarian, and I've never learned what the Imperial flag looked like, we just learned about the two Croatia had a separate agreement and policy within the Empire. I thought there was a flag, but this one always seemed sus. Now I know why, and why people use this one. Very informative, to the point video, subbed.

A simplification and identification choice is not a "lie" pretty much as a 1:1 map would be useless. Pretty much as "Austria-Hungary" was its official name, yet I would not argue how "Austria-Hungary did not exist".
This said, you would be surprised how pretty much every state entity predating XVIII century, starting from the Netherlands and Russia, relied on merchant ensigns (who I remember are national flag for civilian use at sea).
I suspect finally a english-language only problem, for in Italian we don't really make a huge investment on stressing "a" vs "the" flag, we are used so much at different emblems since the Renaissance to us is not a big deal.
tl;dr: it is not a scandal, you can relax
PS: The Croatia-Slavonia one is contested, as far as I know Hungary never enforced its use outside the domains of St Stephen crown (aka Hungary and annexed states).

I'm not trying to whitewash the history of Austria-Hungary as I am well aware that they (especially the Hungarian part did some pretty messed up stuff, like forced assimilation, but when you compare it to other empires in the same era, I doubt that you can genuinely say it was that bad. We all know how the British and French treated their colonies, the Belgians also did unimaginably horrible things in the Congo, the Germans commited a genocide in Namibia, the Russians practiced forced assimilation in a much worse manner, and the less we talk about the Ottomans, the better.
This can be seen as whataboutism and a way to excuse the atrocities of Austria-Hungary, both of which I'm not trying to do. It's just that Austria-Hungary is often negatively portrayed as a backwards empire that didn't know how to treat its subjects well, basically living in the past, when they did some pretty progressive things, and minorities, while not treated well, weren't actively persecuted like in most empires.
What I'm trying to explain is that it wasn't an EVIL empire, it was a normal empire, which did the same bad stuff empires did, but a lot of good stuff too. Still doesn't mean us Hungarians should completely whitewash its history, which sadly, a lot of us do. It seems like when it comes to us and our beighbors, you can either see Austria-Hungary in a black and white way, instead of it being morally gray.

@@PeterPeter-pr2hi The entire history of all humanity is full of violence and bad stuff. You can connect any neighboring nations and there would be countless attrocities between them. No empire has treated everyone well because an empire needed to conquest territoties in the first place.
Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth was very tolerant and even they did some atrocities, history is too brutal and too long for anyone to be a saint.
If a nation in the XIX century was too weak to survive alone then sorry but you needed to be a part of an empire and Austria- Hungary was the best for it's subjects.
I am happy that we all are independent now but if we look at the history then our situation wasn't bad. All western and south Slavs lived under Austria in the XIX century, this is our Slavic history.

So we know that the commonly used flag to represent the dual monarchy at the time was simply the black-gold austrian flag, but since we confuse that with the austrian empire, the civil ensign, despite having never been used by the state itself, still represents the country best- it has two halves, an austrian half, and a hungarian half.

    • @FlagAnthem
      @FlagAnthem 9 місяців тому +1

it was not "simply" the black-gold, a range of flags, this one included, was in use.
