BUGS OR BENEFICIAL? Uncover the Mystery of the White Stuff on Your Water Propagation Plant Cuttings
When propagating plant cuttings in water, have you ever noticed calluses forming on the cut ends? At first, these calluses might look like mealy bugs growing underwater, but don’t be alarmed. These calluses are more than just a natural occurrence; they're actually a very good sign.
First, let’s talk about why calluses indicate good plant health. The presence of calluses shows that the cutting is viable and actively working to survive and grow. It's a sign that the cutting is responding well to the propagation environment, protecting itself from infection, and getting ready for new growth.
Next, calluses signal root development readiness. Callus tissue is an area of active cell division, meaning these cells can transform into root cells more readily than other types of plant tissue. This readiness means that once the roots start to grow, they are likely to do so rapidly and robustly, leading to stronger and healthier plants.
Additionally, cuttings that develop calluses have a higher chance of successful rooting compared to those that do not form calluses. This increases the overall success rate of your propagation efforts.
Now, how can you encourage callus formation on your cuttings?
First, keep the cutting dry. Before placing the cutting in water, allow the cut end to air dry for a few hours to a day. This drying period helps initiate the callus formation process.
Second, use a rooting hormone. Applying a rooting hormone to the cut end can promote callus formation and subsequent root growth, giving your cuttings a boost in developing strong roots.
Finally, maintain proper conditions. Ensure that the cuttings are kept in an environment with appropriate humidity, light, and temperature. This encourages healthy growth and callus formation.
In summary, calluses on plant cuttings are beneficial as they protect against infection, facilitate root development, and indicate good health and healing. Encouraging callus formation can lead to stronger, healthier roots and more successful propagation outcomes. So, next time you see calluses on your cuttings, know that your plants are on the right track to thriving.

You said "ski-sors" aka scissors!!! Love it
Update please?
Is it safe for vegetables and mint plants to? Please answer me it is very urgent
Yes, I believe so. I would Google it just to be extra safe.
@@PlantswithKevin You made my day,Thank you very much. I appreciate your effort ☺️

I’ve seen it on a few of my water prop, but not often. Thanks for sharing Kevin!
You’re so welcome, my friend!! 😃

Hello! 😃
thanks for the info!
No problem!
Pest patrol is never fun. Glad calluses are a good thing.
Me too!
😍
☺️☺️☺️
Ack. I had something like this and just assumed it was a pest! Thanks
😆😆😆
Wondered about this 😂
Now you know! 😄
Good to know!😮
☺️☺️☺️
Your plants are absolutely beautiful~ 💚
Aww thank you! ☺️
@@PlantswithKevin Thank you too for sharing 🤗

As it should be! 🤣🤣🤣

I love Silver Blush and would have thought I'd instantly prefer the one with that cross, but I actually like your second one better! And I do see a difference. :) I enjoy your anthurium videos because I know you know the challenge of growing them here in Colorado. I really like the Heart's Desire too and if I ever saw one of those at HD, I would pick it up because you cannot beat that price! But I never see them.
And yes, I've purchased far too many plants online!
Thank you so much!!! 😊
💚🌱
😄😄😄
Cute little bebes - can't wait for the update!
Thank you!! 😊 me too!!!
Just had a similar experience, high humidity ikea cabinet..boom mites! I grow in PON but i also grow carniverous plants so I will never know which started the issue. Alas, i SHOULD have started with DE, but i didnt. Effectively damaging and killing quite a few expensive anthurium. The good thing is im crazy and have multiples LOL but still quite sad. Anywho finally got DE because of this video (where was it hiding!!!) Wish me luck, i cant stand seeing them, it makes my skin crawl
I’ve only noticed them in the fall and winter months! Never have seen them in the spring or summer
@@PlantswithKevin yea who knows how long they had been in there. I didnt have quite as many as i saw in your video, but enough to see them when finally SAW them LOL. do you use DE as a preventative now? or just when they pop up? My plants look so dumb covered in all this powder but i need em GONE 😆
Foxfarm.........has it all
💚🌱
☺️
👍

My easiest are bakeri and scandens, but for the silver veining ones clarinverium is my favorite, i like the way the leaves display flat like cardboard too, The florist ones work really easily for me too.
Ooo thanks for letting me know! I’ll have to check those two out! 😃
For houseplants I enjoy ordering from Steve's Leaves, Gabriella Garden, Canopy Plant Company, BWH Plants, and Cactus Club. I enjoy the look of Anthiriums especially the heart shaped plants. My purse and experience with Anthiriums has led me to stick with species like the Superbum, Plowmani, the one with the nickname "fingers", a cross of lux and radicals and a couple of other non velvety species.
All GREAT options!
Where did you get those pots and what size? Thanks!
Those are Lechuza pots! 😃 You can find them on Amazon or on Lechuza’s website. 😃 Exact one I got is: Lechuza 15563 Delta 20 Indoor and Outdoor Use, 16" x 6" x 7", Self Watering Planter, XXXX-Large, Charcoal Metallic
@@PlantswithKevin Thank you! I do have one question. Everyone so far says to let the plant dry out completely, so do you water it and let it dry before you add water again or the self-watering is fine?
@AlohaPlantLife channel just put out a fertilizer video that was excellent. You may want to watch it. What she said about fish or any organic fertilizer makes me glad I don’t use it. 🪳
Ooo I’ll give it a look! 😃 Thank you!!!
I just bought a Patricia I haven’t gotten it yet though. I am with you the less “messy” the plant the easier to watch and to keep clean. I really dislike bugs!
You and I both! Lol you love your new baby!!! 😍
Amazing video as always, and congrats on your other news! 🎉🎉❤
Thank you!! 😊
👍
❤️
Nice anthuriums Kevin! I only have 3 anthuriums: crystallinum, pallidiflorum & vittarifolium. I find the crystallinum to be the easiest. I don’t have a greenhouse cabinet & I don’t use humidifiers; they’ve been with me for almost 2 yrs in ambient house humidity.
Love that they’ve acclimated for you smoothly! 😍
😄
I’m so excited to find your channel! I can’t wait to learn how to be a good Mile High plant mami from you! 🥰🌱💓
Awww I’m glad you found me!!! 😃
Yup! I remember how covered and insanely expensive these were in the house plant groups a few years ago. Just got a lovely, full, vibrantly variegated, medium-sized one from Trader Joe’s yesterday! 🤗
Oh wow!
I so LOVE Nick at Floura Foundry!! He’s so knowledgeable, so kind, etc! Are you going to the Rocky Mountain Plant Show in Greenwood Village July 20-21?
He’s the best!! I didn’t know about the show but will definitely look into it now!
@@PlantswithKevin I just sent you the instagram link for the info for it. It’s also all over FB plant groups 😀
I haven’t bought from Steve’s Leaves yet, but I may now. Those are really full and healthy looking Anthurium. Your plants are absolutely gorgeous! I want you to come to Ohio and decorate my house. 😊
lol! Yes!!!! Steve’s Leaves is great!!!!
But people who bought, had the happiness of owning it since 4 years… It’s like fashion designs, if you wait you get off season discount but if you buy at season you are the only one having it 😂
Good point!
I just got one. I hope I can keep it alive. It sits under grow light. Should I move. I guess I should give it a pole too. It's about foot and half tall.
Super easy plant! You’ve got this! 😃
👍
😋
Great video Kevin. Have you ever done a video showing any plants you have that ARE NOT doing well? (the rest of us would feel a bit better. ) Everything you have always seem to be picture perfect. PS You are looking pretty good yourself these days. Maybe you should start a fitness channel.
Thanks! Yes, I mention plants that aren’t doing well in various videos. Check em out! 😃
That’s such a surreal sky view from your window; I love it. Thanks for sharing Kevin!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Same light determines everything plus moisture per room. I also want to keep all my Anthurium together, but I am slowly separating them as they grow they need more room. You wore me out I feel your pain in this video. When I do a day of plant care, I am exhausted.
Plant care day isn’t a race, it’s a marathon! 🤣🤣🤣
Have any updates on this plant? I am curious how big it got. I have one and it is splendid! Love him.
I’m glad you asked! It has BALLOONED in size! And rather quickly too! Its longest leaf is about 25”. 🤩
@@PlantswithKevin holy smokes!!!
