I started in the aquarium hobby. Pothos and many other Aroids are used to help balance the water parameters. And when doing a water changes, I always use the “old water” to water the plants.
Same! And so far all my plants love tank water! I keep cichlids which can breed like crazy, I use a 10 gallon grow out tank and the water there actually gets “dirty” faster!
I have mine climbing. These are some issues I have noticed: - structure. Make sure your pole is steady and strong. Find some way of tying it down to the nursery pot. I had mine on a plastic pole and it bullied and wrestled the pole as it grew larger. Best to use something rigid, like metal wire, plank, or even store bought burlap (though I don’t like the latter two because they might rot over time). - rooting- that said, a pole will definitely help to stabilize the plant, but I’m not sure how well it will help direct the roots or be an extension of the pot. For some reason my aerial roots just refuses to grow into the pole. The plant also grow off the trajectory of the pole so you will have to guide the plant as it grow. - find a way to stabilize or strap down the plant. As it grows it will lean forward and become super top heavy. This is super important to consider.
@ truth be told though if I’m to do it again I would’ve grown it as a crawler. My gloriousum has this setup where it will grow in a long Lechuza planter with two inner compartments. It will grow from one to the other, and once it reaches the end of both, I will chop it down the middle, empty the compartment with the older plant, and then have them switch places so it will crawl indefinitely without uprooting it. Although it will take years for the Thai constellation to reach the end of both planters.
I got my Thai early summer last year. It has remained pretty small with little leaf output. I did just start to use fish poo fertilizer, so hopefully that will help the growth. She is not big enough to put on pole or anything yet. The last cuttings I did from a mother monstera were propagated in water, and they are all doing wonderful with new leaves coming out, but are a little small compared to the original leaves prior to cutting. Thank you for the fun content! I too live here in Denver area and I understand the weather changes and challenges!
That's beautiful! I got my Thai Con in the summer too so its like your mini one, its also my favorite plant I own. The newest leaf is 15 inches and I'm getting my first inner fenestration that's exiting. I also live the the Denver metro so I feel your humidity problems... At least you try I cant keep it high but it seems ok my other plants don't LOL. Im trying the climbing method but need to repot now with a better pole.
It's so exciting watching those new fenestrated leaves unfurl! 🤩 The humidity struggle is real in Denver lol. Fortunately the Thai con isn’t as fussy with it like other plants. 😅 Keep me updated on your Thai Con! Thanks for sharing your story!
Getting some fish fertilizer TODAY for my Thai! I've got mine in November, it grew a new leaf (so now it's got 7) and an areal root which I've directed into the pot. It's on my east facing window and under grow-light when the sun goes down at 5pm till 10pm. Don't like mosspoles so I'll have i crawling as I've seen a giant one on one of the channels and it wasn't on a pole. Thank you for the info, Kevin 😃
I have always known them to do better with a moss pole and for propagating air layer sphagnum Moss just above where you want to make the chop and wrap this bag of moss with clean fill around it it will develop aerial roots in that moss and as soon as it does you can go ahead and propagate it with no issues
I really appreciate your insight! Your method for propagating with moss sounds fantastic, and I’m sure many viewers will benefit from it. Thank you for contributing to the community!
Thank you so much for the compliment on my home! I truly appreciate it. Keeping an eye on airflow and humidity levels is essential for a healthy living space.
Thank you for the content. How much fish fertilizer do you use for watering with every watering. Instructions on the bottle are for every 3 weeks. I was guessing using 2tsp per gallon but curious what you or others may use. I water most of my plants about every 2 weeks
tbh I really don't know how much I put in lol usually just a smidge to make the water murky haha. I know the instructions say that, but each watering it's only helped my plants and hasn't hurt them. That said, I do realize none of my pothos like it it in the off-season. Other than that, all of my plants do :-)
@@PlantswithKevinis a small amount like enough to where I WONT notice the smell too much 😂 Like let’s say I get a spoon and just cover the back end of it with fish poo, like that?
Hi: Before cutting you monstera to make a new plant, be sure that the part you are cutting has roots, or at least the "nubs" where roots will form...sounds basic, but mine didn't root, as the top growth was too young and I was too much in a hurry to make a new plant...your big Constellation is a beauty...by the way, I've never been able to get mine to attach to a pole...she loves "trailing" and being dramatic, and resents being forced onto anything like a pole...good luck!
Thank you so much for the helpful tips! I appreciate you sharing your journey with your Monstera. It’s always nice to learn from others' experiences! :-)
My two Thai Consellations are growing slowly. Last one I purchased this month from Walmart for only $30! Anyway Inhave fish emulation but that stuff stinks!!! I guess I will try it indoors when watering and see how it goes! Thanks.
Hey there Kevin, fairly new subby here from London UK! Can you tell me more about the fish fertilizer please? Shall i buy fish hydrolysate and add to the water or emulsion? I ran out and ordered the fish blood etc but now realising that wasn't what you meant, so will use in our garden. As I'm in the UK i will have to improvise, so really appreciate your advice please. Thanks in advance
Thanks for tuning in! Fish hydrolysate is a great option for your Monstera. Just mix it with your water according to the instructions, and your plant will be thriving in no time!
Do you use the small amount of fertilizer every time you water? Does that affect soil quality at all? Or is it harmful to the plant since it’s possible to over fertilize?
I have two on poles and I got them from the same batch in like a 2 inch pot and they sized up fast. I use dr. Shultz fertilizer one just pushed out its first leaf off the year and it looks like it’s going to be a big one.
Does the fish fertilizer make your living space smell at all? I've used it outside and it can be pretty intense. Great looking specimens you have though, nice work.
Got mine in Oct 2024 as a 5 leafed baby and it tried to push out a new leaf end of Dec but it was hard and brown so might’ve been an overwatering issue. So had to snip that off and now waiting for another to come through m
It sounds like you're on the right track! Overwatering can definitely be tricky with Monstera, but with patience and care, I'm sure your plant will bounce back and thrive!
It can be tough when a plant isn't thriving as we hoped. Make sure you're providing the right care-light, watering, and humidity all play big roles. Don't lose hope; sometimes it just takes time for them to adjust! :-)

I love that sooo much and wish I had an aquarium for that reason! 🤩
@ You should start one! It’s a fun hobby and there are aquatic plants as well

Kevin my Thai finally has a new leaf coming. I bought in May 2024. Finally. Thanks to your info. Thank you
You're sooo welcome! :-)

Awesome tips, thanks for sharing! Sounds like your plant has a mind of its own! Gotta love those rebellious roots! 🌱

I’m so glad you’re finding my content fun! Hope the fish poo fertilizer works out well for your Thai! lol
I put a cutting in tap water 2 weeks ago and now I have so many new roots.

I'm curious how you deal with mold in such high humidity? Or do you blast humidity because you have such a strong airflow? Beautiful home btw.💕💕
Also Thai Cons hands down are the best when it comes to monstera prices vs reward!

Growth Secrest:
1. Grow Lights
2. Humidity above 55%
3. Use fish fertilizer, all year round
you've got it!
Hola, do you use beneficial mites at all for your collection?
Hi there! I haven't used beneficial mites for my Monstera collection yet, but I'm definitely looking into it. They can be great for pest control!
That's Fawsome!
🤩🤩🤩
I’m no longer allowed to use fish emulsion to feed my plants, my family says no more 😂
Oh no, that's a bummer! 😂
Put your aerial roots in a separate water container before you cut your propagation. It will give you a full healthy root ball to plant into soil.
Thanks for the advice, I'll have to give that a shot!

I do and it doesn’t! Since it’s natural and not chemically created :-)

Not at all, actually! I'm not sure about other brands, but Alaska 5-1-1 is pretty solid.

sure am! :-)

Mine has only grown one leaf in 4m
Sometimes growth can be slow, but every leaf counts! Keep nurturing it, and it might surprise you with more leaves soon.
