I Destroy our #Cummins / #Onan Generator Cooling System, Melting our #Vetus Waterlock and Hoses!
#sailinglife #boatlife #diyproject #vetus #boatrepair #boatmaintenance #marinegenerator #generatormaintenance #cumminspower #cummins #cumminsengine #boatgenerator #creatorofboatsystems #offgridliving #generatorepairing
Despite renewables we still rely on our Onan / Cummins generator when the sun doesn't shine. However, after forgetting to close the sea water shutoff valve I completed melted the raw water cooling system on our generator.
In this maintenance blog I strip down and completely rebuild the cooling system replacing the waterlock / muffler, impeller, exhaust and cooling water hoses.
If you're a professional, expert or even an old salty sea dog with some good advice on how to repair a Onan / Cummins marine generator.. or even how to fix a Onan / Cummins marine diesel powered engine, then please leave any constructive criticism, insight and advice in the comments below the videos.

    Hi again, I notice you have anodes on your rudder? I’ve never seen this on any other Super Maramu’s? Usually just the 2 anodes on the rudder as the keel is connected to those via the bonding strap in the bilge.

    • @MothershipMaintenance
      @MothershipMaintenance 25 днів тому

      On the keel you mean? Yeh it already had those on there when we bought it. The bonding strap was broken so I wondered whether previous owner noticed some galvanic corrosion and added them without checking the bonding strap. Anyway I reinstated the bonding strap but kept the extra anodes. Another manufacturer with a similar keel.. Maybe Colvics or Contest (?) recommended adding extra anodes to the keel so I figured it’d do no harm so kept them.

    Hi Woody, can I ask is there a reason why you shortened the pole from the end that takes the sheet, rather than the end that connects to the smaller jokey pole?

    • @MothershipMaintenance
      @MothershipMaintenance 25 днів тому

      Either end would have done the job really but I noticed the rivets needed replacing on that end anyway.

  • @JayPerrypersonal
    @JayPerrypersonal 28 днів тому

    I have this same job to do, but forward where the eye bolt is for attaching the block to where the pole fore-guy connects. Would you say that G10 board I’d strong enough to tap and the bolt hold there?

    • @MothershipMaintenance
      @MothershipMaintenance 25 днів тому

      Yea definitely. I was a bit unsure as I’d never worked with the stuff before so was a bit shy with it and didn’t really add enough. I would have doubled the thickness in hindsight and saved myself a lot of fibreglass layering!

    Woody, arent there big cable exiting the engine room at the floor and mid way up by the filter? But, then they are all in the cabin step... how do they come together? I am trying to route the WS500 cables and am afraid of hitting one of those big cables.

    • @MothershipMaintenance
      @MothershipMaintenance 25 днів тому

      They just all squeeze together behind the insulation. It’s not pretty and tricky to get in there.. you just have to fish around with your hand in the engine bay while someone wiggles them from the other end!

    hello mate from the other part of the world :) some suggestions from me :) 1 make another sea cock to have the genset separated and easily used for the main engine in case of emergency ;) 2 see if you can manage to rig that stop solenoid to the alarm system as this could have been easily avoided , that onan is equipped with 3 shut down alarms, low oil pressure , high coolant temp and high exhaust temperature, these only work if the system is connected to a functional shut off solenoid :) if that is not possible to fix or too expensive (ask me how I know ) you can always order a temperature gauge with alarm and install one on the exhaust and another on the engine coolant , whilst you are at it an oil pressure alarm and its all set , sure you can find on ebay or aliexpress etc , keep it up and if you need you know where to reach out :) fair winds and say hi to all :)

    Easy error to make. I've done something similar and now always hang a key or a tag on the start switch when I do anything to the engine so I know to check everything before just mindlessly starting it. It doesn't always work with new people who might not realize what the tag/key means but at least you will get a bit of a reminder. It's saved me from having to McGyver in remote locations (which you are exceedingly good at). Glad you got it sorted out and that you didn't have to dive in Salty infested waters to find that adapter!

      Here in Switzerland you can have two cars and one registration plate. Of course it's easy to drive off without having changed the registration plate - potential big fine. So I have a sign saying 'Don't be stupid!' on the steering wheel of the car without the registration plate to remind me not to dive it without changing it. Since then there's been a 100% reduction in stupidity. Well, number plate stupidity.
