We didn’t do the mods and we work remotely. To be honest I’m in 4-5 video conferences a day and it’s really not an issue leaving it as stock

We also did not modify crossed the Atlantic, during the crossing it turned itself flat and heeled over big waves wind all worked great! Also power consumption not that much. Starlink sof far has been great 👍

Do you have to use a Starlink modem?

No need to disable the motors, that is a myth. I say this after 10000 nautical miles with a transatlantic crossing..

Disconnecting the motors doesnt mean it doesn't need motors .. it just means it needs them and can no lomger use them. Performance will be poor at best.

Seems most folks have no issues.

Starlink uses a phased array antenna. Which means it will work even when it is not pointing directly at the satellite. Pointing directly up is not going to give you optimal signal (except when the satellite is directly overhead), but it will still work very well, at least it does according to multiple other UA-camrs.

@@jimb348I am aware how they work, I am an electronics engineer specialising in microwave systems. The way Starlink works is to set itself up in a best direction (usually pointint South) based on your current GPS locarion, it then downloads a set of ephemeris data which descirbes the paths of each of the satellites. With this, it can then point the phased array at exactly the right spot to pick up the right satellite just at the right time, in just the right place. It has around +-30 degrees of control with the phased array. If the dish does not start off in the right direction all those pre-calculated positions will be wrong ... even if it manages to correct the initial position, if the boat is bouncing around, it will have a real hard time trying to find the satellites. A phased array is great, but it will only work well if it knows exactly where to point!

All I can say it had real problems when we were in a rolly anchorage but once it was fixed it was fine. Also when the boat swings around and dishy is trying to follow the sats…they sometimes end up behind the mast.. so blocked from view. By disabling it and mounting it in the back the phased array always picks up a satellite.. even if it’s not the optimum one.
