Welcome to my UA-cam channel- thank you for clicking-in!
Join me as I share some of my machine shop projects, hit and miss engines, wood working, ham radio (KK5IM), Sn3 scale model railroading as well as some interesting history and stories of Texas. I’m not holding myself out as an expert on anything!
I’m a sixth-generation Native Texan- my family arriving in 1836.
My professional career includes advertising and marketing, newspaper-radio-television news (including stints in production and engineering) and professional photography. I continue to shoot commercial work, mostly multi-family real estate properties across the southwest.
In 2012, I built a 40 x 80 “Man Cave” at our new ranch. It is fully equipped with separate “shops” for my main passions: woodworking, machine shop, electronics, model railroading and reloading and vintage and modern amateur radio station. Since we don’t use darkrooms anymore, my office is fully set-up for both still and video digital production.

Testing Vintage Jim Dandy Pecan Cracker - Will be used with Hit and Miss Engine
This is a quick test video! I am restoring this ca. 1942 pecan cracker. This video shows slow motion views of the "Rube Goldberg" mechanism as I figure out how it works and how to adjust the machine. The only documentation I found was the original patent papers which were not very helpful! It only cracks the pecan-- it does not shell it.
Made in San Antonio, Texas, I bought it at a tool sale in 2019.
"Theoretically" it is supposed to be automatically adjustable to crack (not shell) pecans.
Any constructive comments will be appreciated!

Hi I have watched you restore this from the beginning can I ask were did you buy your reproduction badge plate thank you
The McCormick-Deering "decals" came from Flywheel Supply. The reproduction aluminum "timing plate" or "badge plate" came from Hitandmiss2 on eBay.
Thank you 👍👍👍
real boat anchor radioman have cherry pickers to do the heavy lifting
Amazing.
I can't say I know anything about working in a machine shop, this was a great watch regardless though!
I appreciate that!
Get some raw petroleum to put on it for smell effect.
Chulada de locomotora 🚂 🚂 🚂 🚂
Evening, im from England and have just purchased a 1 1/2 hp model dishpan
Fantastic!
About 4:43 it looks like a screw with a nut coming out of the scale frame to the diagonal brace? How is that brace mounted to the scale?
Fantastic shack well done on all the hard work
Thank you kindly!
Awesome. Looks like you may have removed the internal glass scale to drill the scale and add the support bracket? I need to do this for my Cincinnati 12x 42. Please advise. Subscribed.
We did not remove the glass scale. The mounting brackets are separate. Not sure if if this answers your question. The instructions that came with the kit were, actually, pretty good. Please email me if you need more info and I will try and help. Thanks for your comment!
Muy bien !!!!!!! CE2RKL
Gracias!!

Indeed he was! Cyd graduated from Amarillo High School (as did I). Good catch!! Thanks for your comment.
This guy isn't lucky. He's just plain blessed.
Indeed I am blessed. In many ways. Thank you.
WoW that's one very impressive installation. I congratulate you Sir for your skill and determination in restoring, manufacturing and running such a beautiful collection of *real* radio equipment. 73 de EI6DP
Thank you! 73
Super nifty
Very inspiring! Thank you!
Like your design I may email you for schematics I have two extra ART-13 mod transformers plus a power supply with 1800v, 425v, and 28v perfect for your design. Been looking for a good design for the one of the ART-13 mod transformers glad I found your video.
Very very impressive!
I've been looking for a good hit and miss engine, I have a idea for a good business that I can use one for
We use ours to run an oil pump jack, make home made ice cream, grind corn and this one will soon operate a pecan cracker! Watch for a new video on that this fall. Thanks for your comment!
Nice work. 73 N2XEV
Many thanks!
She is a Beauty!
Thank you!
What a fantastic tribute to your father and grandfathers... I hope to pass my shop on to my grandson as well...
Very much appreciate your comment! Thanks!!
Great job. Your understanding of the ignition system was incorrect. It is a high voltage ignition system and the low 180ohm resistance of the LED across the spark gap was effectively shorting it out.
still not sure what these were used for, catalogue says coast artillery, and AAA units, and was sposed to communicate with the SCR-593 warning set. but havent seen a TO&E, with those.
Your Z is a beautiful engine. I myself rebuilt a 1 1/2 1918 Z compression was not high due to pitting on the cylinder. I had a machine shop bore and sleeve it. The points were modified from original and now it’s a running machine.
Thank you! I'm getting ready to put this one a pecan cracker!
I love your engine! Great find !
Thanks!
Very interesting! I grew up in PA. We had lots of coal and heavy equipment. I never thought about the oil fields. This video is so cool!
It's so great to see this video!! I found [and still have] one exactly like this one in 1972. Way before the internet, which brought me to this. I haven't had mine running for years but am going to get it running again and hope to power a line shaft machine shop I put together many years ago. I use a big electric motor to run it all the time but I have a smaller throttle governed enclosed crank that I've used before. I just want to get this out and running again. Mine still has the tin box with the knife switch and a model T coil like this one. When I dragged it out of a junk yard in 1972 the rocker arm was broken and missing but I figured that I could make something to braze on that would work but it would be a lot of trouble and thought. Imagine my happiness and surprise when in cleaning out all the junk in the water hopper I found that whoever broke the rocker arm off in the past was thoughtful enough to put it the the water hopper to be found! I brazed it up and it worked great. I had it running for years [after much trouble without the help of the internet] and with a load on the flywheels it would keep certain RPMs pretty well. I need 250 RPMs on the main shaft so the spring trick I just learned will most likely to come in handy. That and a bunch of pulleys. I'm so grateful to see this! Mine also has the same [but weary and rusted out] gas tank too. I now see one can even buy a new gas tank! Who'da thought?
Thanks very much. Let me know if I can help!
So Heart Warming, Amazing Voice along with the artwork of video production the music was a blessing. :) Speaking of your history and sharing, with the grace of reaching out to family. Almost having a tear. Lots of love to all subjects. I'm up late not able to sleep, searching for Machine Shops History, I'm aware of a local antique belt machine shop, restore, open to public and just to educate others. A chance to support old small town. :)
Thank you so much!
That was absolutely incredible.
Great video, lots of detail! That is quite a find! We recently bought an engine that needs a buzz coil, nice to see the information. Weird Detroit Engine Works 3 Hp 2 stroke reversible vertical boat motor with a cooling water pump.
Glad it was helpful! I learned a lot working on it.
luckily the bands are coming around. hopefully you can use some of that awesome collection of military radio's.
Hi Jay, Thank you for the tour through your shack. Very Impression station and shacktour! See you on the air. 73 Jürgen DL6NAV, WK6K
Thanks for sharing. Love this old stuff. We didn’t own anything like this, but my dad took me to local antique tractor shows and events. Ironically, we also had a Model N railroad layout we tinkered with.
Very cool! Thanks!
Dude!!!!!
Wonderful! It’s such a terrific engine and you did a great job on it. Great to see your grandson interested in it as well. 😄 Also you’re too kind 😊😊😊
If you had a hill you could try build a central power. (Look it up, truly fascinating)
Seen several of those. Would be very cool to get one!
@@Radiotexas I used to tend gas wells in Titusville PA, very close to the "Drake Well". There was an old central power on one of my lease roads. It was all over grown but the turn table was visible. The engine was missing its cylinder. Way back at end of that lease was a small service rig with 1943 license plate. There was tree growing up inside the derrick and animals has chewed all the rubber of the tires. I spent 48 years in the oil field. I'm retired now, but work part time making fishing lures.
That was a wonderful video. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you very much!
What a honour to receive a radio from Art Collin’s widow. Well deserved.
3 years too late, but……..DMAN! That looks AMAZING! I love those desks with the green tops. You could write a book about everything in that shack.
Very well done! Would be fun to attempt a 669 to 669 contact some time.
I really appreciated your help pal! If conditions every improve we'll give it a shot! Long haul from Texas to CA!
Im 64 and this is one of the best old school stories ive ever heard in my life. Your fathers career was just amazing, nothing stopped him no matter what bad times may have dished out he was educated, inventive, creative, a teacher and so much more. I SO enjoyed your fathers story, the kind of man America would be hard pressed to produce today, God bless him.
It was my grandfather. Thanks so much for your very thoughtful and kind comments!
You still have to take a written exam but now, the requirement to be proficient in the sending and receiving of code is no longer a requirement. I learned it through because you never know when I’m going to have to use it. I can copy upwards of 20 WPM if I’m ready concentrating and listening with headphones.
You need to insert an intro to this movie that says: WARNING! Nuts may have been harmed in making this video.
Guilty as charged! Many nuts were indeed hardmed! However, 5 # of Georgia pecans in the shell are on their way. I got it working but ran out of Texas natives!
I just love this type of machinery. It shows that six years of college are not necessary to improve the world.
I want one.
Very nice. Laynie will have no shortage of pecans to make pies with!
She loves it already!
