Old school engineering at its best it works doesn't require a battery or a printed circuit computer board!!
Thank you as always for sharing your knowledge!

Principal over convolution. I absolutely love it!

Great design! Yes, Rube would be proud. Now you need to paint it to make it look purdy, add some pinstripes for effect, and file for a patent.

That's satisfying. I'm wondering how one guy would start it without your gadgets?

A guy MUCH younger than us could probably do it. The issue with holding open the intake valve is to bypass the resistance from the compression stroke until the flywheels are spinning fast enough to overcome it. Even the starter stick cannot overcome the compression on the big IHC 6 hp. If the engine is primed and well tuned, it is often possible to bump start it by hand. This involves rotating the flywheels backwards and giving them a quick "bump." When it works, it works! But one has to be careful or you'll wind up on your back or worse!

I made a compression release on my 6 hp FM. It holds the exhaust valve open not the intake. This way you do not get gas blown back out of the carb. Very easy to make and can be removed so engine is back original if needed.

I'd like to see more info on this. Thanks!

I see that this video has been up for 3 months, and I just found it. I think your idea and your engineering are OUTSTANDING!!! Maybe you should patent this device…or, if not, you should at least sell the detailed plans for it…$50.00 would be a very reasonable price. I’d pay it in a heartbeat because this particular lack of a third hand and a solution for it has been on my mind for at least a year! I have come up with a similar, but different, method of “cranking” the flywheels, and like you, using an automobile starter. Cool. I’m “saving” your video. THANK YOU!

Gas Engine magazine asked me to do an article which has plans and is "in the works." Thanks for your kind comment!

great video and awesome engineering-- possibly some large wing nuts, so that you don't need a wrench to adjust height?

Good suggestion. Already done. I didn't have any 3/8 knobs in stock!

Now, THAT'S Mechanical Verve & Intrepitude! (So, when are you build one in cast iron to be consistent with the machines?)
