We were in DisneySea last September. We were lining up for one of the rides and you know how long the lines go in the rides. She was with a friend and they were kind of way back in the line, in such a way we would like cross each other's path when the line moves. Whatever word or words they used for "fetish", they seem to have a somewhat different meaning from what it means in english or related languages. Most of these are more like preferences and almost all of them were about men. The last one was the only one that I would consider as at least sort of a fetish, although still some kind of preference. If you ask people in western countries about their fetishes, they would probably be a bit more reluctant to tell, because we most likely think about some kinky stuff that you wouldn't talk about in public unless you're a very open character. Things I would consider a fetish would be, starting with the least bizarre ones: Nylon stockings, shoes, latex or leather clothes (in all cases also wearing tham as well as seeing them on your partner), some body features, but more like unusual ones like women with huge breasts or extremely musculous men, but also things like (unhealthy) skinny or obese partners, tattoos or piercings either on themselves or others. Then there are weird, extreme or (for most people) disgusting sexual practices. If you watch some JAV or Hentai, you quickly realise that the japanese very well know these things and are probably even more crazy about it than many others, so I think, they didn't really ask the question we expected to be asked.

The United States definitely has no sense of confession culture compared to Japan. We’re more on “going with the flow”, which is more like “reading the room” and reciprocating. I didn’t understand it until I met my girlfriend two years ago. She didn’t think what I did was me saying “I like her”, and I was just flabbergasted by that. According to me, I had made it clear that I was into her, but she thought my actual confession was when I actually asked her to be my girlfriend. This video definitely brought a lot into perspective 😂

Even in the US, they still attract attention. Although it already existed, same sex marriage and all didn’t get legalized until 9-10 years ago. It also seems like the LGBTQ has had a bad rap lately given all the controversies and entitlement a lot of these individuals present.

Black people are NOT a monolith. Just because you’re black, doesn’t mean you’re muscular, scary or fast. These kinda assumptions like can be very dangerous, dehumanising and can lead to fetishisation or worse. Black people, just like Asian people, can be anything with any type of characteristics/personalities/demeanours due to their upbringing and current environment. I’m sure culture plays a part but it would be remiss of me to assume all Japanese people are hyper polite, docile, smart, anime loving people who are all high level martial artists right? Let’s all try not to judge people based on ideas from media or from ONE person we’ve met from said race/community please. Also, for more authentic responses, perhaps you could interview black people on their experiences. I feel like the majority of women you interviewed were clearly very careful with their wording which leads me to believe if the camera was off, their answers would change…

I think that this interview would have been very different 30 years ago. When I was stationed in Yokosuka in the early 90s, there was a lot of media stereotyping about black men. I don't think I was ever the victim of overt racism, but being 195cm tall and weighing 150kg, I noticed that Japanese people tended to give me a lot of sideways glances.
