    When I saw the title I actually expected Affinity to perform much worse than Photoshop, but they've gotten it to a pretty decent state with subject selection. I'll have to try this myself, and maybe add a bit of selection refinement for improvement.

    • @bydesignmethod
      @bydesignmethod 2 години тому

      Yeah I think Affinity did great and this was just a 'one shot' one-off. Still in beta so I think it will improve!

  • @lloydstuartm.d.5625
    @lloydstuartm.d.5625 4 години тому

    Can you still refine the selection in Affinity after it does it first shot at selecting the subject? This way you could get better hair selection and remove parts that were selected on the subject select tool? I don't have the beta version so I can't wait until it becomes part of the entire package.

    • @bydesignmethod
      @bydesignmethod 2 години тому

      Hey, You can absolutely refine it and you can also use the 'object selection tool' which (at this point) I think works better. I just wanted to take a '1 shot' with both Adobe and Affinity to see how it looked. Thanks for watching!

    It doesn't matter which of the two does this better. If I didn't have Affinity Photo I'd even choose the Gimp before I'd use another Adobe product.

      @@bydesignmethod I've been using photoshops since it was invented in 1990. Thats 34 years. But I too am fed up with their unethical practices and greed and I'm looking to change. I have the whole Affinity suite loaded up but I haven't dived into them yet. I don't need any of that AI stuff either because I'm old school and I'm used and trained to do everything manually. Having AI do everything for you will take your entire hard earned skill set away quite rapidly. I'm in no rush any more that I now you just do it for my own pleasure and I enjoy the process that matter how long it takes. So yes I'm completely ready to jump ship so your tutorials are going to be great for me thank you.

    I am glad I switched to Affinity Suite last summer and dropped all of the Adode products. I was very surprised when I found I could do everything I want and need to do with Affinity at a more reasonable price. I found the learning curve wasn’t that bad either once I wrapped my head around the differences in naming the function.

      Hey, It all depends on the woman's position (fully submerged, etc) I would add her and use the mask to take away what you don't need so you can see everything. You could also play with the blend modes to get a different effect being under the water. Thanks for watching!

If you go to your settings and find 'User Interface' you'll have an option to change the tools from colour to 'mono' (black and white) this makes it easier to see them. Or doesn't it matter? At the moment I have dragged in the two pics I want to use but nothing happens when I try to use the brush either to hide or reveal, black/white. Thank you.

    • @bydesignmethod

      Hey, In this example both pictures were added by going 'File > Place' - although it should not matter. You must apply a mask to the photo first, then make sure the mask is selected in the layers panel and then select your brush and paint in black and white to hide/reveal.

I used gimp and Inkscape because its free however I never find a good tutorial then back to Adobe product and bite to have my learning Illigal/Hack product it expensive used without Internet otherwise Adobe keep bugging because it is not genuine. One day, I search for Adobe product alternative for learning, finally I found Affinity then I used trail version I love it. Second, I search tutorial found "Design Method" is perfect for me. I learned a lot for just two days watching and practice in which I never learn from other photoshop tutorial. Design Method is a perfect tutorial easy to understand. Anyone figure out how to apply multiple gradients to a shape? I can't even duplicate the shape and then apply a new, second, gradient. it simply resets and gives me back the original gradient to adjust. What if I want to apply 20 gradients to the same object?

    • @bydesignmethod
      @bydesignmethod 8 днів тому

      Hey this is actually a great question, I've honestly never tried multiple gradients but you're right - I get the same thing. Affinity Photo doesn't have a blend option like Photoshop to add multiple gradients. I've seen some work arounds by stacking shapes and using masks to get a similar effect, but not as easy.

    I'm watching all your content to learn AP but I'm noticing that some effects can only be applied if i right click a layer and rasterize it. There seems to be this pixel vs raster situation in the image world. I tried seeing if you have a dedicated video on that but only came across Raster vs Vector. GPT says rasterizing an image is like turning the pixels into a cohesive unit like an image in a magazine. I seem to need to rasterize things like text before I can stretch it and whatnot. Any videos on this distinction? Or videos that even talk about this inside the main content? Thanks!

      Hey, Interesting - sometimes you have to rasterize images in the layers panel before editing them (you will see it says 'image' instead of 'pixel' - and affinity sometimes does this for you when you try an edit) I've never had the issue when using text as it's normally pixel/vector based. I don't have a video on this but it's a good idea. are you using a PC/Mac, iPad? let me know, I'll look into this

    Motion Array had a great new years message to their contributors: "We will cut your earnings!". This is no joke. Motion Array has adjusted the earnings system in a way, that it means at least 50% of an earnings cut. This is the second earnings cut in two years. Motion Array's slogan to their contributors is "Let's grow together". At the same time they cut the earnings for their contributors. You can't beat the cynicism on that. To all customers: take please in consideration, that this company shows a great customer relationship. They try to appear ethical. But internally to their contributors they act with digital feudalism and slavery. Be sure as a customer of Motion Array, that such a behavior let true creative work die. We create and provide our best work for you as customers. We love, what we do and we love to do it for you.. We spend lots of hours and hard work for every single asset you can download there. Sorry this is a bit adrift of the brilliant video itself but I'm grappling with Affinity Photo 2. I follow instructions as carefully as I can but still can't make it work.I'd love to see a video along the lines of 'If it's not working, this might be why' video or written up somewhere (sort of working backwards from the result I want to get and what might be stopping me get it right, if that makes sense!) I think my mistakes may be that I didn't spot the tiny detail in a video or maybe it's thought to be very obvious (though clearly not obvious to me!) so it's not worth mentioning. And then weird things happen and I think 'how did that happen', eg where did that layer go? Why have two layers seem to be one layer now and how did that happen? Or why when I've used one type of brush and click off that brush does it still want to do its stuff when I've clicked on a different tool or brush entirely? Aagghh! I'll keep going though! But as I'm writing this tosh, I've just noticed I can click on a transcript! A transcript! Yay!

      Hey, Thanks for watching, I really do like the feedback. You're right, sometimes things go sideways and when you use Affinity for awhile you just kinda brush past them..but it's helpful for others. If you have anything specific let me know, happy to go over it again!

    Someone recommended using a colour passport/grey card when photographing a painting to import into photoshop and wondered if affinity photo has a similar tool?

      Hey, No actual tool. You can make some adjustments to white balance for a grey setting for nothing really simple unfortunately.

    All kidding aside, you’re the first to mention the inherent masking inside adjustments. This will be a major step forward for me in my product photos. Thanks so much.

      You're welcome! I'm glad you found it helpful. Built in masks give you so much more control.
