Anyone else coming here after the big Adobe Photography plan price hike? I've been using Affinity designer since 2017, but the main reason I was still using Photoshop was this feature. I know, I know, you can do it better manually but that takes ages. A quick and dirty object selecter and then some fine tuning in the mask will do most of what I need. Sure hope this will also be available for RAW editing.
I've had a few comments about this, I thought Adobe would 'play nice' for awhile after the outrage about the AI model training but here we are. Thanks for watching!
@@joosy1993 Not sure yet, I know they were having some trouble and removed some of the features for certain users (mac intel users) so they're working out the bugs. Shouldn't be too much longer!
This is honestly a game-changer, especially for new users who still don't know their way around creating accurate selections and using the refine tool to it's full ability yet. Thank you so much for yet another comprehensive video!
I don't think it's a gamechanger. It's not even a gamechanger in Adobe. Adobe has a related feature that removes the background. Before that feature came out, I had a automation that I created for that purpose. It works extremely fast because it doesn't need to "think" or communicate with a remote server. I started trying Adobe's solution. When it works it does a good job. When it fails, it does things that make no sense at all. Also when it fails, you might not notice the failure so it sets you up for a bigger problem later when somebody else notices it. To make matters worse, it fails on simple things. For example, in my work, I'm extracting garments from a background. I would often have a very, very simple beanie on a flat background. I use Adobe's AI solution and it would repeatedly remove the background, plus a big chunk out of the side of the beanie. Like, how does it get something this simple wrong? I gave it a shot, then I eventually stopped using it because it just made too many mistakes. My own solution is faster, but also it gives me the opportunity to be careful about what is background and what is not.
Yes, that's why i said its better-suited for newer users who are not familiar with a more advanced workflow such as the one you're using. It's a good start for users who are learning about making selections on simple subjects and getting the job done fast @@KuttyJoe
You're right, I think I got excited with the addition of the tools but I should have spent more time doing some photo manipulations to give a full picture. I appreciate you watching and leaving a comment!
i really don't want to go use adobe anymore but boy do i miss photo management... being able to import and organize, see an entire catalogue and manipulate a bunch of pics with similar settings then batch export. opening one at a time is a bit of a drag. i'm new to Affinity, are they going to add anything like this?
That is definitely a big request they get often. Hoping with Canva backing them (finance wise) they will start to add big features like that. Thanks for watching!
Would love to see that auto-selected wolf against a different photo background, so we could see how natural the edge transition looks. (It'd be cool if there were edge presets for hairy &/or fibrous outlines...)

Every time I see 'Affinity update!' I get excited, and then have to calm down because it won't be what I'm hoping for. Huge fan of the Affinity apps, but I was so disappointed when they removed the 'standalone' option for dual monitor Macs. Because I'm still using v1, I can have all my tools on one monitor, and the images on the other. Since v2, the primary toolbar must be attached to an image, there's no standalone setup. Since Mac video management is complicated, it's unlikely they'll ever go back, and it makes me sad to keep missing new features. (Not that AI interests me, but so so many little quirks were fixed in v2 that I still have to put up with in v1.) As a wise philosopher once said, it is what it is.
A great way to look at it. Affinity has been missing some pretty (and basic) options for a while now (image trace tool in designer being one) but I love the products and will continue to use and support them as much as I can
I didn't know this was available with the last update. I only work in the betas. Well I guess my lazy butt need to go ahead and install the latest beta version that I DL'd a few days ago. The thing bugs me everyday when I jump into Affinity. This looks niiice! And it's about time too! Lol. It's essentially an editable background remover (plus more). I'm glad too because I'm wayy too impatient and overly meticulous to do intricate selections. It ALWAYS take me far too long.🤨 Hey DM - Now ya knooow... It would be great if you were to use some of your new fangled goodies in a couple of your upcoming tutorials so that folks can see them in action. Whacha think about that self-promotion?

@@bydesignmethod Well I'm going to have to pay attention to what they've added this time around. I usually just trip across the new stuff as I'm working. Lol. Hope you're good as well sir!
But, did they steal some else's artwork to train their models? Most artists are not only concerned about their OWN artwork being stolen. They don't want ANYONE'S artwork to be stolen. We all have no problems with companies using artwork for which permissions have been given by the artists for their artwork to be used for training models. But, we all want those permissions to be explicitly and specifically for training models. So far, I have seen no vendor claiming to use models built ONLY upon artwork with those specific permissions given.
They don't need to steal anything. This isn't generative AI so it's not creating artwork from anywhere. It's object recognition. They can train the models on stock photos that they have the rights to use. I have some of my photos and videos on a stock site and I can opt-in to allowing them to be used in training AI models. It's interesting because I've actually seen a few cents come in now and then from it lol. I agree though that they need to be upfront an totally clear that their models have be trained on content that they have the rights or permissions to use.
This of course is super useful and very welcome, but my Mac is old (late 2015 and therefore stuck on Monterey), I don't have the dosh to buy a new one, and in order to use these super exciting new Affinity A.I. tools (let's call a spade a spade?), I would prefer to gnaw my own arms off than to switch to Windose.
