    It would be an interesting character arch if Theo was promised his mother back by Sauron. It would explain his weakness to be defeated by a lady warrior.

    • @TalesOfTheRing
      @TalesOfTheRing 2 дні тому

      That's an intriguing take! The idea of Theo being manipulated by Sauron with the promise of his mother's return would add an emotional and psychological layer to his story. It would frame his descent into darkness not just as a pursuit of power but as a tragic, misguided attempt to heal personal grief. This kind of vulnerability would make his fall all the more poignant and relatable. It could also serve as a compelling parallel to the Witch-King's arc, showing how Sauron preys on personal loss and ambition to ensnare his servants. If Theo's choices ultimately lead to his transformation into a wraith, his defeat by a lady warrior could symbolize the triumph of purity, compassion, and courage over deceit and despair-a thematic echo of Éowyn's confrontation with the Witch-King.

    The Book of lost tales has sketches for a story set among the wild elves of Koivie-Neni, where an Avar named Nuin awakens the two first elf children, Ermon and Elmir and teaches them language, later men separate into evil men serving Morgoths servant Fankil and good men who stay by the elves, theres a great Battle, the battle of Palisor after which the different people flee and spead into all directions... this story reminded me much of the myths Andreth tells to Finrod, how her ancestors built Morgoth a large temple and worshiped him by human sacrifices... now with the three Elf-fathers we get another piece of the puzzle... despite coming from so different stages and times in Tolkiens work they strangely align into a whole picture.

    • @Aurora2097
      @Aurora2097 3 дні тому

      HUMAN children! Ermon and Elmir were mortals of course! The story has a Wizard king named Tû or Túvo whi is ruler of the twilight-elves of the waters of awakening.Some believed Tû had once been abducted by Morgoth and been his pupil, however he does not seem to be an evil character, rather an isolationist who mistrusts the humans... Tolkien says the Avari were led by Morwe and Nurwe in his later writings though, no Elf-Wizard Tû, instead he briefly used the name Thu for a predecessor of Sauron with no known connection to the first elves, though he reminds me of Fankil a lot.

    • @Aurora2097
      @Aurora2097 3 дні тому

      HUMAN children, not elves!

    • @TalesOfTheRing
      @TalesOfTheRing 3 дні тому

      The story sketches from The Book of Lost Tales do indeed weave an intriguing narrative that aligns with later pieces of Tolkien’s legendarium. The tale of Ermon and Elmir, with their awakening and guidance by Nuin, offers a mythic origin for early interactions between Elves and Men, one that hints at the complex relationships and conflicts that would define Middle-earth’s early ages. The parallels to Andreth's recounting of her people's worship of Morgoth add another layer to this puzzle. It shows how Tolkien repeatedly revisited the themes of moral division, loyalty, and the influence of Morgoth across different times in his mythology. The Battle of Palisor could even echo the later struggles of the Free Peoples, showing an early form of the alliances and betrayals that would recur throughout Middle-earth's history. As for Tû or Túvo, his role as a "Wizard King" of the twilight-elves feels like a precursor to the later depiction of Sauron’s manipulation or the isolation of the Avari. It’s interesting that you link him to the isolationist tendencies Tolkien later assigned to certain Elves like the Avari under Morwë and Nurwë. While Tû’s mistrust of Men fits with the theme of estranged peoples, it’s fascinating how Tolkien later shifted the narrative to integrate broader themes of rebellion and estrangement in Middle-earth's cosmology. The early drafts, while often differing from the later Silmarillion canon, reveal how Tolkien was constantly refining his mythology. The overlaps you’ve pointed out-between Nuin, Fankil, and Thu-suggest that Tolkien was working through ideas of betrayal, loyalty, and the manipulation of early peoples. It’s incredible how these fragments, when pieced together, create a mosaic of Middle-earth’s history.

    A lot of unsubstantiated speculation. We see a lot of that with the blue wizards, not helped by Tolkien's own indecisiveness. It usually falls into they either turned evil like Saruman, they died trying like Gandolf (the gray), or they got distracted like Radagast. But why does it have to be like that? Remember the wizards were emissaries of the Valar they served and brought their attributes. Radagast came from Yavanna and loved nature, Gandolf came from Varda and brought wisdom, patience, and empathy. Saruman, like Sauron, came from Aule and liked building and order. The blue wizards though... <chuckles> the blue wizards came from Orome, the hunter. He liked going out at night, hunting down monster, and killing them. It was while doing so he found the Elves and taught them. While the other Valar debated on what to do he left and guided them westward. He and Tulkas were suspicious of Melkor even after he had done his time in the halls of Mandos and been released. When Melkor and Ungoliant stole the light of the trees it was Tulkas and Orome that gave chase. Morgoth feared Orome (and Tulkas). He was strong, brave, and fearless but still just and kind, he wasnt afraid to get his hands dirty. I see no reason to not think the blue wizards wouldnt mirror their patron. In fact when the first was recruited for this quest he asked the other if he wanted to come along and the answer was (apparently) some version "hell yeah, Im in" Why does their fate have to mirror the other three? Maybe they helped the eastern and southerners defeat Sauron and stayed to remain teachers and protectors. "Valinor is kind of boring, we can do more good here." Heck, they could have even split up. One going south and one going east. They might not even have seen each other for centuries. We simply dont know. As for the "only corrupt men to the east", rubbish. 4 of the 7 houses of Dwarves were there. Who knows how many Elves were also to the east. It was hardly just men. Infact, like the real world, there were probably more men, elves, and dwarves to the east than to the west.

    • @TalesOfTheRing
      @TalesOfTheRing 3 дні тому

      You bring up some really interesting points! I love the idea of the Blue Wizards mirroring Oromë’s traits-strong, fearless, and proactive. It’s refreshing to think that their fate doesn’t have to mirror the others. If they embodied Oromë’s spirit, it makes perfect sense they could have stayed in the East or South, hunting down darkness and empowering the people there. And you’re absolutely right-there were Dwarves and possibly Elves in the East, so their mission wouldn’t have been limited to Men. Maybe they did exactly what you said: split up, helped various peoples resist Sauron, and stayed to guide and protect them. There’s so much room for possibility here, and that’s what makes their story so fascinating-it’s a blank canvas for imagination.

    Good job really then, that Tom, an embodiment of the natural world itself is far too amorally detached from Ea's sentient humanoid races narrower drives and preoccupations. So remains substantially aloof rather than taking on the role of a sort of sporadic but irresistible deus ex machina. Or LoTR would've told a far shorter, duller tale than it actually did.

    • @TalesOfTheRing
      @TalesOfTheRing 5 днів тому

      Exactly! Tom’s detachment from the narrower ambitions of Middle-earth’s races is crucial. If he had become a deus ex machina, the story would have lost its depth and tension. His aloofness allows the Free Peoples to face their struggles, make their choices, and grow through hardship. Tom’s role as a passive observer ensures the tale retains its richness and complexity, making The Lord of the Rings the epic journey we cherish.

    It always amazes me that the Creator of whatever universe exists is always male, in a time before male and female were even concepts. Tolkein was as male supremacist as any religion.

      You do know that there are several religions and mythos where the first deity/creator is female, right?

    Ea, the universe. Arda, the world. Middle Earth, a continent. Eru, god. Valar, archangels. Maiar, angels. Melkor an archangel, Lucifer.Valar. Manwa. An archangel, Michael.Valar. So very Catholic.

    If only Elves and Men would have consulted Tom seriously..but alas as in this world, their world learns from karma born of greed and perhaps there is a reevaluation and choices are very different in the future.

    Why didn’t Durin’s Folk ask Glorfindel to slay Durin’s Bane

    • @TalesOfTheRing
      @TalesOfTheRing 7 днів тому

      That’s a great question! Glorfindel, being one of the few Elves with the power and experience to face a Balrog, might seem like a natural choice. However, there are a few reasons why Durin’s Folk likely didn’t seek his help. First, the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm were proud and independent. They may have viewed the Balrog as their own problem to deal with, especially since Khazad-dûm was deeply tied to their heritage. Asking an Elf for help-especially a High Elf of Rivendell-might have felt like undermining their own strength and honor. Second, there’s the issue of timing and secrecy. The Dwarves likely didn’t know what Durin’s Bane was until it was too late, and by the time they fully realized the threat, Khazad-dûm was lost. The Dwarves who survived likely fled without knowing the full extent of the creature's power, let alone its exact nature as a Balrog. With the depths of Khazad-dûm sealed, the Balrog was more of a forgotten terror than an immediate danger until it was disturbed by the Fellowship. Finally, Glorfindel’s focus was on protecting Rivendell and aiding the Free Peoples in the fight against Sauron. Even if he knew about the Balrog’s presence, seeking it out in the depths of Moria would have been a risk he couldn’t afford, especially with Sauron’s forces growing. So, the Dwarves and Elves each dealt with their own challenges, and the Balrog of Moria remained a hidden terror until Gandalf encountered it.

    For me- Tom represents an echo of the song of iluvatar, a reflection / ripple in the pond that attempts to stabilize creation by providing a constant anchor to the harmony that was just as the discord attempts to overrun iluvatar’s song (which is creation, not necessarily good or evil as he also created Melkor and allowed him to live).

    • @TalesOfTheRing
      @TalesOfTheRing 7 днів тому

      That’s a beautiful thought! Seeing Tom as an echo of the Song of Ilúvatar-a living harmony that keeps Middle-earth grounded-is perfect. He’s like a constant presence of balance, resisting the chaos Melkor introduced but not actively opposing it, embodying the purity of creation itself. He’s there to remind us of what Middle-earth was meant to be, untouched by power, simply existing as a part of the original song.

      where there is light there is also darkness, and the gods use it to refine & define a soul a conscious choice, i guess in that Universe and this one, they find it useful

      @@klani1309 Beautifully said! Light and darkness, both in Tolkien’s universe and ours, serve as contrasts that shape choices and forge character. The existence of both isn’t just conflict-it’s a tool for growth, refinement, and defining one’s true self. The gods (or Eru in Tolkien's world) seem to use this duality to create depth and meaning, making every choice significant.

      Haha, exactly! It’s a fun way to say that things are what they are, and changing one detail doesn’t always change the whole picture-or in other words, some things are just meant to be the way they are!
