    I'm from NYC born/raised but hold Irish citizenship thru my parents from N. Ireland. Couldn't give a fk what the brits think about americans, including my own extended family. In fact I can't wait for Trump to pull the plug on Ukraine so the rest of those lazy EU bastards can work 2x as hard and send their money to NATO and Ukraine to defend their contienent. The "ugly" American is fking done defending and supporting you lot.

    Very good point about cost of living being lower in Scotland, but salaries are also lower as well, so it's all relative! When friends and family come to visit us in Spain, they always comment on the prices being lower compared to the US. But our salaries/wages are also lower here.

    You mentioned the name of a town you will be visiting soon and to my American ears it sounded like the name of the town is "Duncal" but I am wondering if you are actually going to visit the Irish town of Donegal which has a similar pronunciation to the name you were saying. Donegal is correctly pronounced 'Dun-E- Gul".So, I am wondering if in fact you are going to Ireland what mode of transportation will you need to take? Which I think it's obvious you will need to take a boat or Ferry. But, I wonder will you take a train to Western Scotland and then board some kind of boat or where would you pick up such boat?

      This is real life in CA, but we appreciate you sharing your experience. Prices in other parts of Scotland and other stores in the UK will also be much lower. We hope to do a Costco comparison between CA, GA, and the UK. That would be even more telling.

    This is depressing. Safeway has recently been in the news for its high prices. It was penalized millions for overcharging customers. Lucky Stores isn't much better. I find Waitrose closer in comparison to Safeway. Tesco is maybe closer to a Sainsbury, if not M&S.

    You two are too cute. A joy to watch. Don't feel bad about your opinion of food quality in the US. You're absolutely right. There are far too many additives in our food & pesticides used to grow the food we eat that are illegal elsewhere.

    Just wondering about the drone footage I've seen in a number of your videos. Do you have to have a Flyer and / or Operator License (as defined by the UK CAA), and, if so, did you have them before arriving in the UK or did you obtain them subsequent to your arrival? Didn't know whether any work you might have previously done with the CHP might have included drone operation, which could have transferred over to the UK for licensing. Just love this whole series of the record of your family's move to Edinburgh, a city I have visited twice and to which I would choose to move if I had to leave the US (as one of my high school class mates has)..

    • @SimpleScottishLiving
      @SimpleScottishLiving 3 години тому

      Hi! Yes, I have both the flyer and operator license. I didn't need both as my drone is under the 250g limit (249g), but it is a simple test and small fee, so I figured it was better safe than sorry. I got these when we got over here and didn't have them in the US. The use of drones was just starting to take off (sorry 😜) before I left, and it was only for a specialist unit. Thank you for your kind words and for following our adventure! All the best.

    Lovely video - that point at Urquhart Castle where you say “and this is why we moved to Scotland”, sums it up for us too. Even down in the most populated parts of the country across the central belt you still don’t need to go far to find stunning scenery, but once you get into the Highlands it’s on another level. I feel your pain over trying to edit stuff down - at various times I’ve tried timelapse drives, messed around with 360° cameras, and currently am dividing up hours of footage from a two day trip to Mallaig on the train into 2-3 minute chunks of interesting things which also get reframed as reels for Instagram, but I’ve not really hit on any way to convey the countryside and views in an interesting way for friends and family to see.

    OECD data shows that in real terms 2022 dollars PPP, US employees made $78,000 a year to the UK's $54,500 - some 43pc less. This means UK workers are considerably worse off than their US counterparts, all things considered.

      Reportedly, there's more competition between major supermarket chains driving prices down here in the UK than there is in the US, but I've not been to the US to know if that's true. US have laxer food regulations, larger farms, larger fields which ought to give them a price advantage on domestically produced produce. I'd assumed the artics (trucks) in the US would be significantly larger capacity, but a quick google suggests ours can carry more weight, which seems odd, presumably they must have a larger capacity by volume though.

    I worked for Safeways UK many years ago and they had self scanners in many stores. You could also use green plasic Safeway box`s to pack you groceries away as you shopped, ideal for transfering straight into the car. On the next shop just bring the boxs back and start again.

    • @SimpleScottishLiving
      @SimpleScottishLiving 14 годин тому

      Haha, I remember shopping with my parents at Sainsburys and they had those reusable boxes. There are still a couple floating around at my parents house! Thanks for the comment.

    • @mels8966
      @mels8966 11 годин тому

      Ah yes I remember those green boxes and the special trolleys with rectangular hoops for them. Even before they introduced that we were in the habit of taking a couple of large plastic boxes in the store in the regular cart so we could put most of the shopping in them at the end of the checkout, because using large boxes is quicker and much more convenient than packing and unpacking bags and for loading in in the boot when it is raining. Morrisons took the stores over and got rid of the scanners, although the store here has since been demolished and morrisons moved to larger premises.

    Yes we do have self scanners in some grocery stores in the US. Our local chain, Giant, near Washington DC offers them. Although I’ve never used them. My daughter lives in Dundee, Scotland and I visit several times a year. I’ve noticed all the differences you mentioned about layout, eggs, etc. I probably don’t notice as much of a price difference because in the US I shop at a military commissary which limits profit by law and does not charge tax. Either I’m at the commissary or Lidl. I grow many vegetables at home and I work for an online farmer’s market where I get a lot of locally grown produce I can’t grow. My daughter’s Scottish boyfriend came to visit and noted that whenever he ate out or ate processed food, his stomach got upset. When he ate our home cooked meals, he was fine.

    As a Brit, shocking to see how expensive food is in the US. In fact that difference probably even bigger. For example I'd never buy Twinings tea, but go for store own brand, better and cheaper. Same with the BBQ sauce, amazing that the imported brand was only a little cheaper in the US, UK brands would be far cheaper. Fruit and veg prices in the US are ridiculous. We don't even grow avocados or grapes in the UK unlike the US, they are imported at great expense, but they are still cheaper.

    As an ex brit my decision to move to California 4+ decades ago was the best decision we ever made.

      We loved our time in California as well. What made you move and what don't you miss or what makes you so happy with your decision? We love hearing from all perspectives! 😁

    This is a very odd list ! there is no attempt to show if you have tried to equate equal quality products. Ok a spud is a spud,an egg is an egg, but you showed the cheapest nastiest raspberry jam on UK side, but you could have paid three times as much in the same supermarket. I was in New England in '76 and food seemed to be pretty cheap in the supermarkets, but the real eye opener was the low, low cost of things like pizzas, subs, burgers and the like. things must have changed to an enormous extent !

    It's like comparing apples and oranges. It's impossible. I've lived in the US for the last 25yrs and will never be able to answer the question where I'm better off. For example, higher salaries for sure in the US but then little social safety net and exorbitant health care costs.

      Agreed! We’ve had great experiences in both countries. It just comes down to what makes the most sense for that stage of life really. For us, right now it’s Scotland, but we never would have been in the position to move a decade ago.
