Ep: 7 - Subscribers: 6,546
Hi all! Thanks for joining. Today, we’ll be answering some of the questions we’ve been seeing in our comments as well as those questions you posted on our “Community” tab. We did our best to cover a wide variety, but unfortunately, we couldn’t quite get to them all. Dinner at Granny’s was calling, so we will be planning a part 2. Some topics covered in this video include our brief “How We Met” story, UK vs. US salaries and cost of living, Zach’s start with the California Highway Patrol, a not to miss Karaoke story, and much more. We’ll need to go into detail for topics such as the visa/relocation process, so that will likely be a video in the next month or so. We appreciate all of you taking the time to post, and we hope to be able to answer all of your questions soon. Wishing you well - Zach and Annie

Ep: 6 - Subscribers: 5,046 Thanks for joining! Today, we are outlining our house buying process in Scotland and comparing it to what we went through with our first home purchase in California. We’ll be including things such as the infamous blind bid system, offers over, solicitors, and so much more! We’ll also be giving a very “rough” house tour and sharing some of our BIG plans for this small ...

American in the UK: 21 British Culture Shocks & Surprises
Переглядів 75 тис.21 день тому
Ep: 4 - Subscribers: 145 Welcome! Today’s video is all about the culture “shocks” we’ve experienced since moving to Scotland in May almost a month ago; however, we think cultural “surprises” or “differences” could actually be better terms. We’ve found it interesting having two perspectives with Zach returning to the U.K. following 14 years in the U.S. (so reverse culture shock there), and Annie...

Ep. 3 - Subscribers: 110 Thanks for joining again! In this video, we’ll be sharing our 18 hour travel experience from the U.S. to Canada to the U.K. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles! It was relatively easy going compared to previous trips, and we couldn’t be more thankful for that. There were a few minor hiccups along the way, but nothing we couldn’t handle. We’ll also show you a quick glimpse o...
To Pack or to Purge? Preparing for Our Move to Scotland
Переглядів 6 тис.Місяць тому
Ep. 2 - Subscribers: 98 Wow! Today, we’re showing you all that went into preparing for this life changing move from the U.S. to the U.K. There were lots of ups and downs along the way but mostly excitement to keep us moving along. We sold, donated, or purged most of our belongings as we knew moving and downsizing from 2,000sqft to bunking with Zach’s parents would be a squeeze (although a welco...
Why We’re Leaving Sunny CA for a New Life in the U.K.
Переглядів 15 тис.Місяць тому
Ep. 1 - Subscriber Count: 74 Welcome to our first ever video!!! Have you ever dreamt of leaving it all behind, picking up, and just moving to a new country for a fresh start or different experience? Well, that’s exactly what we’re doing. Our young family of 5 is leaving our home in California and moving to a small town just outside of Edinburgh, Scotland in the United Kingdom. In this video, we...
They have scanners in RI… and Amazon stores you don’t even need to scan as the tech does it for you.
I’m Irish & I’ve only ever had deep fried choc bars in America!
Really happy for you guys, always great to see people make the move to this place. I hope you’ll love your lives here :)
Thank you! So happy to be here :)
What a sweet and cheery home!
Thank you!
The algorithm put you in my feed and I’ve gotta say - the algorithm nailed it so I had to comment. We are mid-pack for our move from Sonoma County to Ireland. We’ve planned a channel for our friends and family back home too. 🤗
Oh wow - how funny! Can’t wait to follow your journey as well. Do you have a channel name I can look out for?!
A large cutting board for over the sink, that when using the sink can easily just set on the open counter and the original prep space isn’t lost! Love this tour! It’s beadboard in the US.
Great idea! Will have to pick one of those up. Thanks for the suggestion and for watching! ❤️
Absolutely lovely home, you have both done a great job! Just please on the videos , do not have music playing whilst you speak, it is somewhat irritating. Otherwise, you have another fan!
Noted!
Just found your channel so I went to your first video. Haste ya back. From Scotland.
Thanks for joining!!
This is NOT a small house. Also if Zach was born & raised in Scotland why does he have an American accent?
Many of our Scottish family and friends considered it small for our size of family, but we can appreciate it may not be small to everyone 🙂 Thanks for watching! Zach also worked in law enforcement in the U.S. for many years, so we think his accent changed as a result of it wanting to stand out during a quite contentious period.
Your home is beautiful! 🥰💚
Thank you!
You asked about what we would like to see in a future episode. Then as you've come home to Scotland as well as UK, and as your fairly local to Anstruther. Then review the best fish n chips, in UK, so I'm told in countless videos, at Anstruther fish bar? Can't wait to see an ex US oppinion traditional and excellent food here in Scotland.
Making a note of this one! Who doesn’t love fish and chips? ❤️
I love the green trim what’s on the walls?
Thank you! We have farrow and ball green smoke on the trim and I believe Johnstone’s garlic clove as the white. It’s similar to SW alabaster.
The paint looks pink because it’s picking up the red in the eo
Good spot!
Best of luck 🤞🇬🇧🏴🇺🇸
Thank you ❤️
My husband and I were set up on a blind date, we celebrated our 53rd wedding anniversary last week.
We love these stories! Congratulations 🎉 ❤️
Pollok park in Glasgow I’d recommend for scenery 🙂
Thank you for the suggestion! ❤️
Of course you'll have to pay for those long days in the winter, which lasts awhile. Jocks are very friendly though. (My Mum was one so I can say that)!
Yes, exactly why we moved in the summer!! We’ll know what we have to look forward to again during those winter months 😅 Thanks for watching!
Re: Irn Bru - spend the money and buy a bottle of the "1901" edition. Since you've been away, the government has introduced the 'sugar tax', forcing manufacturers to cut sugar or face hikes in minimum prices. So most fizzy pop is now loaded with artificial sweeteners 😝 Not the 1901: as it says on the label, "Old and Unimproved"!! Be warned though - it can have a dramatic effect on American youngsters! My sister-in-law's kids were bouncing off the walls for about 24 hours after they had it for the first (and last!) time 😂
Good to know! 🤣 We’ll be keeping out of reach of the children. Plenty of bouncing off the walls, so no help needed in that department!
So glad I came across your channel! Fascinating hearing about your big move. Oh, and Annie, knew I liked you....Go Dawgs!! 😉
Awe, thanks for joining! Sick em!
I couldn't imagine buying a house on the other side if the world and not viewing it but i suppose there's no other option
We wouldn’t recommend it to most, but luckily, we knew Zach’s parents wouldn’t let us down. It was worth it in the end!
I’m Scottish and a chef and I think deep fried mars bars are a joke even though they have become a thing. Now if you want to try “deep fried” ice cream then send me your recipe. I wish you and tours all the very best. Rab.
Good to know we’re not missing out! We’ll give it a go at some point for fun but not expecting too much. Deep fried ice cream sounds amazing! Thanks for watching ❤️
We stay in Scotland. You don't "live" here, you "stay". Remember that when you're asked. We also have Highland Coos next to our house too. Remember, look out for the Unicorns and the wild Haggis. There's the Highland breed, the Smooth Coated and the Irn Bru Orange coated ones, they're extremely rare. I'm sure the wind and rain will wear you down once the tartan shine has washed off. And don't forget to check out our Kelpies and Nessie.
🤣We’ll keep an eye out for the various breeds!
How you finding driving in the uk on the left?
Zach learned to drive in the UK so no problem there, but Annie is just starting on her UK driving journey this week. Needed to get added to insurance first!
Love your videos. I’m a Californian who just returned from my first visit to Scotland. At age 75, I may be too late in life to move there, but the urge is real. ❤️
It does pull you in! Thanks for watching ❤️
Welcome to Scotland! The best country, and people in the world! ❤ 🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
Yeah, I haven't seen any guns ever in scotland, farmers are allowed to have a gun! I love the fresh air, here in Scotland, friendly people, spring water, no scary animals, quiet roads,we do have dog parks, but you can roam on anybodys land in Scotland
It’s a truly amazing place! Couldn’t be happier to be here.
What were the websites you used to find a homes abroad?
We loved ESPC, Rightmove, onthemarket, and Zoopla.
You two are absolutely Adorable! 🥰I cannot wait till you come across one of those Honesty boxes amongst your travels within Scotland! You would probably see them in more of the countryside. The long roads and mountainous areas. Further off ow away from the local towns. My preference on what to see of Scotland? Anything and everything! lol God bless you all 😊💗
Wow - I had never heard of the honesty boxes, and now I’m itching to find one. What a wonderful idea! Scotland amazes me more each and every day ❤️ - Annie
Alanna (Adventures and Naps channel) has also commented in the past a kettle in North America takes a million years to boil, hence they are not really a thing over there.
We’ve seen her channel when preparing to move. She’s great ❤️
But if you speed up your time outdoors then you end up moving back indoors sooner so less fresh air. It's understandable in The USA with all their air pollution yet in Scotland, the air is far cleaner and far less pollution due to cars and other transport. Far healthier up there, especially in the highlands! ❤️
Can’t wait to get up to the highlands. We haven’t been in years and so look forward to it!!
@@SimpleScottishLiving enjoy!
They are called edging shears. They also have hedge shears
Thank you! Our minds went blank! We’re also being told that many choose to use these as a courtesy to neighbors, which is a great point 😊
That 240v vs 110v far more efficient
Agreed!
If moving to Scotland check your genes to find if you have good vitamin d metabolism. Because due to global warming the air moisture blocks the Suns uv rays more every year. It was already bad here for seasonal depression, but its getting worse, however only that segment of people with poor vitamin d production suffer really badly. The rest just find other wars to cope. As a result of this we are moving to Greece in winter, stay in Scotland in summer.
Thanks for the heads-up!
Lovely couple great videos
Thank you! ❤️
Welcome to the UK ❤ I hope Scotland treats you well 😊
Thank you!!
Mind the midges up north.... Prepare yourselves.
I live in rural perthshire, its beautiful! Love living here, surrounded by fields of sheep, potatoegrowing, peas growing too! You have to visit st andrews, beach is brilliant
This sounds delightful! We’d love to visit there ❤️
I wonder how long it will take for Zach to lose his American accent and regain his Scottish accent?
We have that same question!
Im not convinced zach is scottish. He's the least scottish "scottish" person I've watched. He appears to have lost 100% of any trace of scottisness in only 13 years 🤔
🤣Hoping he gets it back soon! We think it could have something to do with being in law enforcement during a pretty contentious time and not wanting to stand out. Who knows?!
@@SimpleScottishLiving fingers crossed 😁. Are you back in law enforcement in scotland?
Love your Content, If you have the time. Take a Drive from Stirling through Glencoe to Fortwilliam on the A82. You guys will love it. Thank me later
Adding to the list. Thank you!
Loved the green paint on the panelling! I find buying houses in Scotland alot easier than England! No gazumping
We’ve heard about gazumping! Cant believe that’s ever allowed. Can only imagine how we’d felt if that had happened 🫣
Great update, glad you are settling in. Nothing better than having coffee and cake in beautiful places. Northumberland coast is a beautiful place to visit , especially Bamburgh castle overlooking the beach and dunes. Zach must have some funny tales to tell from his time with CHP, that woud be great to hear 😊
He does! That would be a whole video on its own 😊
Welcome to Scotland!! I'm in perthshire, weather ok,not too wet! Beautiful scenery, friendly people!! Love it here!! Good luck
We’ll be visiting there soon! Thanks for the warm welcome!
Better enjoy that sun as they never have it here, du Ken what I min?
Soaking up every ray 😅😅
There is a place south of Edinburgh about an hour away from you called Barony Castle. There is HUGE concrete 3D map of Scotland in the grounds, made by Polish university students. It is very impressive and worth a visit!
Another to add to this list! Thank you for the suggestion!
Re: salad dressings, we tend to make our own dressing from scratch rather than bought dressing
We’ll be doing that soon!
The ringtone difference dates back to the landline era. We noticed the difference when we first heard phones ringing on imported US TV shows in the 1970s
It’s the only thing that really surprised Annie with this move! She’s never had a phone in the UK during her visits, so it was a new experience.
Many people make there own salad dressing from scratch.
We’ll be doing that!
The electric kettle thing has, in part, to do with the electric voltage difference. An electric kettle will take much longer to boil in North America
Makes sense!
Years ago somebody told one of our Australian relatives that a Haggis was a small creature that lived in Scotland and she believed it. Subject of much leg pulling afterwards.
That’s amazing 🤣
