School uniforms act as a great leveller. I came from a council estate on the edge of town that was a bit rough around the edges. But when I arrived at Grammar School, a mostly middle class school, all the rich kids were wearing the same clothes as me.

The reality is that if pupils at school were allowed to wear their own clothes, it would soon degenerate into a competition - who has the (expensive) Nike or Adidas (or whatever) training shoes, the designer T-shirts etc. If everyone wears the same uniform that's at least one issue removed from the kids' lives.@@SimpleScottishLiving

The UK winter is dark and has a unique kind of damp chillyness that goes beyond the actual temperature, what saves it is in the middle of that darkness is December and the run up to Christmas with all the lights and decorations, Christmas markets and the fun of Christmas itself, at the end of that as we head into a new year the days are getting longer again with another Spring and Summer to look forward to, great video again and Finn is very cute.

Already noticing the difference this week alone. Lights on at 815 p.m instead of 9/10p.m and lights on in the mornings again. Yeah, we always say due to our dampness, our winters may only average -5/7 degrees Celsius but feels a lot colder. Face numbing and aching cold.

The last time I was “home” I stood in the middle of Glasgow Central Station and told my husband and adult children that I felt like I was amongst my people lol. There is a feeling when you go back that is like no other. I’m very intrigued by your journey and feel like it is something that I would like to think we could do one day now that we’re retired. Definitely never say never! And, we understand that feeling more than you know. It wasn't until last summer that we even full heartedly considered the move (although it had been a pipe dream). Scotland is a wonderful place to retire. It just takes time and some savings to be able to make it happen realistically. We thought that we would have some slight second thoughts after moving, but honestly, it's the happiest our family has ever been. I am Scottish and I live in Scotland. I have travelled abroad extensively over the last 53 years and currently have family who have lived in Northern California for 22 years. I have spent over 6 months visiting friends and family in the USA and travelling too. I am not surprised that you are loving Scotland. As you so joyfully articulate, there is so much to like. I am particularly happy for your kids. You are giving them an upbringing that they simply could not experience in the USA. When you have more time, I am sure that you will discover that only parts of Scotland are wet. I see that you have visited Yellowcraig, and North Berwick beaches. East Lothian has some of the driest areas in the country and the UK. No severe droughts, deadly forest/bush fires, or earthquakes and sunamis. Before you know it,you will be wondering why you ever contemplated bringing up kids in California. Welcome to Bonnie Scotland.

Fresh air and the ability to actually do things and not die of heat exhaustion. Dear Annie and Zach, you two are pure gems. Just as always i enjoyed all of your conversation. You are jumping into all of the experiences so wholeheartedly and with so much joy. You two just give me the giggles. And that is one thing i love about you. Your smiles and laughter are so very much contagious. I don't know how many times i am sitting there myself smiling or bursting out with laughter. I am on the same page with humour as you, Annie.. what kind of humour does not really matter as long as someone can make me smile or laugh. I am all in for the positive side of things as well. And i have to agree, the sense of humor of Americans and the sense of humour of British people are a whole different story. But once one gets used to both of them, you just ginna gave to love them. I adore both cultures with their quirks.
I also am a country girl. I grew up in a village in Germany, just under 2000 people. And i love the peaceful, quiet, slower pace of life. After graduating my A-levels, i moved to New Mexico. Planned was for 3 months but then that turned into 3 years. I studied for 2 years at a private college there and then my daughter was born. Due to several circumstances i moved back to Germany, when my baby was about 9 months old. During summer months the college would take us on road trips throughout the United States. It was awesome to see more of all the diversity the US has to offer. I love the more rural areas with lots of nature and i love connecting with people. I am no big city girl. It is the same with the UK. Although i have been in London several times and i simply enjoyed all of it, I have been all over the city, and also to Oxford, Abbingdon and Bath, i do prefer and live the smaller towns and villages. I love the history, the kind of houses, the smaller scale, the coziness, the landscapes, nature, wildlife,... There is so much to explore. Just all of it is enchanting.
And cozying up with a fire on a rainy day is pure bliss. Maybe i am a bit weird in that sense, but i love the rain. I am enthralled when it is rainy and foggy and i love thunderstorms. Don't get me wrong, i love sunny, warm days too. But summer here with 30 to 35 degree Celsius is not what makes me thrive, unlike my daughter. I love the days with 20 to maybe 25 degree, then it is fun.
I also love the tea culture in the UK. We also have cafes, but they are just not the same vibe. I have a sweet tooth and i love tea. Coffee i only started to drink because of the caffeine to keep me going. And to go to such a cozy place and to sit and chat and absorb and to enjoy the flavours. It gives you all the warm feelings.
I really have to check on the public toilets next time i go somewhere, but i believe we too have gaps at least sometimes on the bottom and i guess always on the top. But i just can't remember if the toilets here also have peep holes. I definitely must inspect them next time.
I also think unuforms at schools is a good thing. Just the hustle with choosing clothes and having the right clothes to be one of the cool kids or to fit in and all the headaches and heartache with not having the right clothes or not fitting in because of them takes so much pressure off of the children. I also think that it can help with the sense of community and feeling more connected with each other.
And my daughter would also love the great indoors activity opportunities in Scotland nowadays. Well, she is 25, but still, even as an adult one can enjoy and play and have fun too, can't we? Not only the kids.
Here, we also have public transport like trains and busses, but i must say, in my rural area, the schedule of busses is not ideal. There is still much potential upwards. In the village, i live in now, you need a car, because the busses are just too infrequent. But i love having the opportunity of puclic transport. Even though, in recent years, i tried to avoid them because it just got more dangerous it seems. In all my years using public transport daily, i have never felt unsafe. But nowadays, there seems to always be happening some kind of crime. It makes one feel more unsafe and thus i rather drive my car.
Just on the very top of my bucketlist is exploring Scotland, second is Ireland and Wales and third is England (i have not seen nearly enough, would love to explore other parts as well). I love watching documentaries to get to know more about the countries, the people, the cultures, and all there is to explore. But it is so much more fun and so much more personal and hands-on with you two. It is like having close pals taking one along on the journey and explaining and showing one around and having lovely and lively chitchats. You let your lights shine so bright and sparkly that it is an immense pleasure and such pure joy to follow you along. I am sending you lots of warm hugs 😊❤️😊❤️❤️😊

We're so happy that you're enjoying following along and that we bring you some giggles. That's all we could ask for. We want to feel like friends and honestly enjoy interacting with each and every subscriber, who takes the time to comment. And, I have to mention how small of a world it is. I was born in New Mexico and lived for 3 years in Germany as a child. Please let us know if you ever make it over to Scotland! We also hope to visit Ireland, Wales, and more of England. There's so much here to explore and can't wait for the opportunity.

@@SimpleScottishLiving The world is indeed small sometimes. Isn't that quite awesome?! I have such fond memories of New Mexico. I have lived in Galisteo and Santa Fe. But i have been up north a few times to Taos and also down south to Alamogordo and White Sands. I loved it there. My daughter was born in Galisteo. I had a home-birth. Now, I live in a village in Saarland again, fairly close to the French and Luxembourg borders.
I do hope to visit Scotland sometime within hopefully the next 5 years. And i will happily take you up on your very kind offer and let you know beforehand.
You truly do feel like friends and i love interacting with you too.
And who doesn't wanna be friends with someone who can make one smile and giggle and laugh so much as you do?!! And who is furthermore sincere and thoughtful, compassionate and adventurous and has a positive outlook on life.
Looking forward to your next video.
And by the way, your home gym is really cool. So well done. It looks awesome. And this extra window facing the kitchen window was definitely the best idea. Love it.
How is life with your frogs? Do the kids enjoy them?
And can't wait to see more of your puppy as well.
I am glad, Zach already found a job. I hope he likes it and gets along well with his colleagues and boss.
And how nice that you could keep your job as supervisor for your company.

What struck me going from northern England to Scotland was coming across someone still doing gardening after 9pm when it was still quite light. That's the advantage of living so far north. Not such fun in January with very short days. Some, who live in southeast England, would have us stay on British Summer Time all year round (they would be least affected). I'm old enough to remember the experiment in the 1960s when this was tried. It was miserable and depressing going to school in the dark and many coming home in the dark as well.

It is funny because us Scots do have a love hate relationship with the weather; if it is hot, we're complaining about that, but when it isn't and it's rainy a lot, we're complaining about need for the sun. I don't mind either, I've enjoyed going out in all weather, the only time I do concern myself with the weather is if I'm trying to capture landscape photographs that involve the sun.
As for this country, yeah, it's why an Ancient Greek who scoured our shores a long time ago had labelled our country Σκοτος (Skotos) meaning 'Darkness.' That characteristic has carried with us throughout with the dark skies. Usually by 2 in the afternoon it can be dull in places, which it's good to get yourself Vitamin D tablets from local Holland & Barretts stores.
On a side note, those large rotating electronic billboards are mainly in the cities, being in Glasgow, you'll see them quite often, but you touched upon the point that you're able to so easily travel into the major cities if need be and it's not some massive treck like you wouldn't be afforded in the land mass of the U.S.
Glad to see your wee puppy is doing well, he will be you's happy and occupied, for sure. 🙂

@@SimpleScottishLiving yes, Scotland has a lot of wonderful opportunities for photography, that is for sure. I had studied it through college here in Glasgow. Even for hobbyists it's something that allows you to capture so many moments that you can have printed and keep forever to look back on.
I just haven't uploaded in a wee bit but hope to get more done soon at some point. Only thing for me is I'm not driving at the moment, but that's all something I'll get around to at some point.
Whilst the weather can be so sporadic, the scenery in wildlife is something else. Speaking of which, if you's ever get the chance on good weather, the Seabird Centre is a worthwhile boat tour home to the largest sea bird population in the world, something you guys would no doubt love.

My Wife and i live in Idaho witrh our children currently, and have been looking what a move to Europe or the Uk would hold for us. Scotland has been 1 of 3 locations considered and after watching your content it pulls it closer to home. We are starting the process and have a target date of july 1st of next year to try and make the leap. Oh how exciting! Yes, we definitely want to make a visa video; however, the rules changes right after my visa was granted. We’re doing our research to give the most up to date information, but the guidelines will be changing at the end of the year yet again (at least income requirements).

@@SimpleScottishLiving good to know that they will be changing. We will continue to do research as we navigate it. The biggest down fall would be finding a visa that allows for running an online business while living there. Not sure one exists from what I've seen.

This is the story….,UK is like pressure cooker just now ….and it’s going downhill fast. Not so much in Scotland just now, but,I think it just a matter of time. Most of Europe is in the same boat. Free speech is a thing of the past in the UK. Think carefully, very carefully.

Re American toilets - I was in Houston once and was in a pub and had to go to the toilet. I walked in and there was NO DOOR on the actual stall, there was a guy just sitting on the pan/bowl, trousers round his ankles and WIPING his ****** !!. I couldnt believe it, the guy wasnt even embarrassed - I suddenly lost 'the need' and rather promptly left !!.

A slight shock at 10.32 on the video! Along the river bank is some Himalayan Balsam, local council needs to be informed as it is an invasive species and needs to be removed and destroyed.

Growing up in England and then living in Canada for 30 years and having 2 kids grow up in Canada and go thru the school system. The UK school system is far superior and school uniforms are an equalizer, for all the kids. Having a dog in the UK is great because you’re not limited to sitting outside eating lunch, and being able to still take public transport. Taking the kids to the pub for lunch and all the baked goods and coffee and tea shops are unbeatable. I find Canada and America pretty boring in general. People, like a very individual lifestyle. Where everyone pretty much lives in their house and back garden. My Dad would always tell us that we were born wet, so get outside and burn off some steam.
